  1. OK, so from what I can make, heres my amateur breakdown of how these guys are being viewed: Exciting Baez Vogel-bomb Zych Dunston Maples Jacquez Intriguing DeVoss Scott Gretzky Marra Dugas Schlect Hoilman Shoulders Jensen Dreamy Easterling Are the rest pretty much filler, or is their someone else I'm missing out on?
  2. If/when Jackson takes over CF, we'll have our entire up-the-middle be pre-FA, homegrown players. And if they can become the players that Robinson Cano, Derrek Jeter, Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youklis, or Jacoby Ellsbury are, that will be super.

  4. Ibanez and his 88 OPS+ can sure rake it. I think Cub like offense is a pretty good description, outside of the fact that the Cubs have no one hitting like Victorino is It's also about what these guys are capable of. Utley, Rollins, and Howard are all in the primce of their careers, and have been underperforming for the most part, as opposed to our guys, like Soriano, Byrd, and Pena, who are putting up the numbers that can pretty much be expected of them at this stage in their careers, although Rollins is somewhat more questionable judging by his past 2 seasons.
  5. They're also paying A.J. effin' Burnett 16.5M per year. The Cubs have been burned by their last two mega deals, of course they're going to be concerned moving forward. I don't get the "do what ever it takes to sign them" mentality. The problem with comparing the Cubs to the Yankees and Red Sox is that the Yanks and Sox also have a habit of producing really good players from their farm system, so when they overpay for a dud, it's not as big of a deal.
  6. The Tigers acquired Delmon Young from the Twins for some minor leaguer.
  7. Off the top of my head, without looking at their roster, the only Astros I can think of are Carlos Lee, Wandy Rodriguez, and the wife beater.
  8. Hey, America runs on pieces of paper, or these days, pieces plastic that represent pieces of paper that once represented pieces of gold.
  9. And nobody cares what you want. That works both ways. Oh boy, good bye thread.
  10. Just to throw a name out there I thought Andrew McCutchen. Sadly, another name was Juan Pierre, but Juan Pierre wouldn't be a bad outcome for an 18 year old HS kid in the big picture...A purely LH Bernie Williams also came to mind. Anyway, he might be my favorite draft pick. For some reason I get the feeling his talent got overshadowed by sheer numbers in this draft. Hopefully they sign him. This sounds like crazy talk, but I'd prefer signing him to Maples if it had to come to that. but does he remind you of any white players? Scotty Pods and Brett Gardner.
  11. It's not like they have a bad offense. Sure, they are'nt putting up the best of numbers, but Howard, Rollins, Utley, Victorino, and now Pence are definitely capable of doing some damage. Even Ibanez can still hit the ball a bir. They could use one more big bat in that lineup, say at 3B. I wonder if anyone has a slugging 3B to offer.
  12. Rock Shoulders just passed Rebel Ridling for most awesome name in the system. Congrats Rock! Nah, Reb still has the edge due to it being his real name, and Rhoderick Shoulders doesnt sound quite as cool.
  13. Found this interesting from an MLBTR article that discusses Scott Boras clients. I didn't realise how much of a favorite the Cubs were to sign Fielder. Whatever these front office guys are saying, I really hope that Ricketts steps in and tells them it's what needs to be done as he did during the draft.
  14. I'm waiting for someone to make the obligatory then stop watching post, which will lead to the if we could, we would discussion that seems to come up every few months for the past few years. It really is difficult to just stop watching. Kind of like an addiction or a no good family member that you can't turn away from no matter how badly they ruin their lives and those around them.
  15. With the deadline being midnight tonight, tomorrow could be like baseball Christmas morning. Yeah, I'm a Jew, but baseball Channakah woulnd't make sense as you get your gifts at night, and more often than not, they all suck but 1 or 2. Hopefully it doesn't end up being baseball Channakah. If all of these signings are true, it should be fun to watch these guys and the 2010 picks on the farm for the next 4-6 years. Hopefully it isn't the only Cubs related thing worth watching in that time.
  16. That was definitely my concern too. It's not really difficult to imagine the Cubs doing that. It certainly would be the very "Cub-like" thing to do. I just wonder if Ricketts is going to openly wonder why attendance is down in the coming years. I still have faith that they'll do what needs to be done this offseason, but if not, it's a good thing that we're signing a lot of great draft picks, or there could not be a lot else for us to follow for the next few years.
  17. If Brett were traded, we'd probably be looking at a 2012 OF of Sori, Byrd, Colvin. I guess if were patient for another few years, Szczur or Ha should be ready to go. If Colvin falters, there are always stop gaps to be acquired. So yeah, if we could get a top pitching prospect for Jackson, who by all accounts will end up a jack of all trades and a master of none, I'd be all for it.
  18. One big problem is is that it isn't often that these true elite players like Fielder or Pujols hit the market, so when these massive contracts have been handed out in recent years, it has been with bad results. Soriano, Zambrano, Wells, Rios, Zito, Rowand, and Peavy are some examples that come to mind, and Werth and Dunn look like they're on their way. Their are also a good number of big contract guys like Holliday, A Rod, Sabbathia, Miggy, who have turned out well for their teams too, but their have been a significant number of big contracts gone bad in recent years, so teams could be getting very gun shy. This being said, when you have the chance to sign one of the elite players in the game, and not just a big name in a bad market, you need to take it, especially when you are in the situation the Cubs are in.
  19. Grabows 3-0 record shows us how important the W/L stat is for a relief pitcher.
  20. Castros Golden Sombrero completely negates the win in my eyes.
  21. Pretty awful day on the farm. I think Jeff Beliveau was the only somewhat notable performance of the day. Vitters had a pair of singles, so there's that too.
  22. Yeah, Carlos Zambrano had another tantrum, so they should just spread the wealth amongst a bunch of guys like Jorge Cantu, Wilson Betemit, Edwin Jackson, and Jason Frasor.
  23. Good thing Augies gone, or Castro would probably be a part timer.
  24. While I don't love Hendry by any means, whatever the offseason holds for us is more on how much ownership is willing to spend than who happens to be GM at the time, so if we have to pay Hendry anyway, may as well let him do what needs to be done.
  25. Again, I'll be shocked is he does retire, and we don't end up trading him and eating most of his salary, but he really does, this could potentially be a huge® offseason.
