  1. Don's one of those guys who virtually everyone would recognize him if they saw him, but many don't know his name. Really? The guy played one of the most well-known television characters ever. I sure as hell know him. http://dg.kscs.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/barney-fife-238x300.jpg I'm sure a lot of people would recognize the character. I'm sure most would tell you it's Barney Fife. However, how many people, especially our age (20's-30's) could tell you the actors name?
  2. I'm wondering if they got a bit crossed up and the 2 A Ball pitchers were actually San Diegos compensation.
  3. Don's one of those guys who virtually everyone would recognize him if they saw him, but many don't know his name.
  4. We should start smaller. Steal Ted Williams frozen head, and keep it at room temperature. Every minute that they waste is a minute closer to it thawing.
  5. Why not? See above. Let's assume for a moment that there's even a 1% chance that Epstein to the Cubs falls apart. Hoyer's not going to quit his job in San Diego if there's a chance he has to work with someone other than his superbestbuddy. The Cubs aren't going to hire a new GM if there's even a tiny chance they have to find a new President (who will presumably want some sort of say on the GM front). The Cubs can not only offer Hoyer a lot more money than the Padres, but give him the kind of payroll that he'd never come close to overe there. I think that for that he'd be willing to wait a year for his buddy to join him and risk the chance that it doesn't happen. And please nobody come back with any Crane kenney related comments. Ricketts has already said that the new GM, whoever it is will have a [expletive] off Crane clause in his contract.
  6. They're like a kid threatening to take their ball and go home. Assuming that Garza, Castro, Cashner, Jackson, Szczur, and McNutt are all of the table, I'm not sure what they could be asking for at this point that would still be holding things up this much. If it's what it takes, I'd be willing to hand over any 2 guys from Daytona or Peoria aside from Szczur. That's what they supposedly want, right? Guys like Antigua and Kurcz have great ceilings, but are they really worth holding back the future of the organization and losing out on a guy who can help us find many more guys like them and better?
  7. [expletive] this, like I said, sign Hoyer and McCleod and sign Theo when we can whether it's tomorrow or next year. There's the chance that they have to come as a package, but that would require messing up the Padres plans to go nowhere in anyones lifetime as well. This being said, can Epstein still be the Red Sox GM? Unless they end up giving him an extension, it's clear that he's gone after 2012, and he'd be under a microscope the whole year and probably wouldn't be able to do much of anything without answering to Lucchino. Of course he could always accidently claim Alfonso Soriano of irrevocable waivers.
  8. There's a difference between doing it just because he wants to and doing it because it's somewhat forced on him by failed negotiations. I'm sure he wants to take on the Cubs job, but if he has to wait a year and doesn't want to put up with another year of Hendry and Lucchino, that's when that possibility could come into play. My hope is that they get Hoyer and McCleod signed as soon as possible so they can get on with the offseason and when Theo joins, he joins. He doesn't have to sit out a year. If the Sox don't let him out of his contract, he's their GM. They can't force him to stay at home. It makes no sense. 0. None. Yes, that is an option, but they could be at the point where they feel that it is a conflict of interest, or simply don't want to work together any longer. I know, if that were the case the sensible thing to do would be to just let him come to the Cubs and take what they're given, but these guys don't sound quite rational and seem like cut off their nose to spite their face guys. But here's the thing, he is their GM. They can't keep him under contract and have someone else perform the GM duties, then they'd be in breach. Didn't we do this dance yesterday? [expletive] man, there are 217 pages worth of dances. I can't be responsible for learning all of them.
  9. It's not everyone who can say they were blocked on Twitter by a semi-quasi local celebrity.
  10. Anyone who uses the phrase ___________ panda should be hung, drawn, and quartered.
  11. It made me want to rage-vomit onto his face. the cubs should hire vince vaughn to be their gm...A CHICAGO GUY DAMN IT. Abe Frohman: the VICTORY king of Chicago. Bill Murray for President Vince Vaugh for GM John Cusack for Assistant GM Billy Corgan for President of Something Something Eddie Vedder for Vice President of not Writing Cheesy Songs about the Cubs.

  14. Um, what's the other 13%? Works for another team all together or doesn't work at all.
  15. Um, what's the other 13%? Margin of error in my mind. There's also a chance he gets bought out and signs a non-compete rider. You think he'd sign a noncompete? For what stupid reason would he do that? So he could cash in a large% of the six or seven mill they owe him and not work 100 hours/week for the next year. It was not meant to be taken seriously, mostly. And I didn't mess up the math. WTF not? If they give him that much of a buyout, he can just relax with his family for a year. He could also study up on the entire Cubs organization. I'm not saying do any under the table work, just check up on how everyones doing in the various levels of the farm system as well as the big leagues and the needs for the near future. As soon as the no compete time frame is up, he signs the contract and gets to work. As long as we have Hoyer and McCleod already in the fold, I don't see the harm in this scenerio. Surely Hoyer can do some level of simple correspondance on how to conduct this offseason as far as trades, free agent signings, and budget.
  16. Ick. That's essentially a 5/125 deal. Would the unnamed agent happen to be Darvish's agent? He won't sniff even 20M/Y after what happened with DiceK When you have pitching desperate teams with lots of money on their hands, it could happen.
  17. It's like 10AM. There's still plenty of time for the drama to begin. I like the lack of information. It suggests that things are actually getting done rather than various media goons re wording the same information or blatently contradicting each other.
  18. Neither team has shied away from doubling down with the 1B/DH type of hitter. My bet is that the Yankees off season will focus around re-signing CC and aquiring another front end starter through trade or FA. The only way I would see the Red Sox doing it is if they were able to pawn off a big portion of Lackey and/or Crawfords contracts off on us in the compensation deal. With them, I think it would be limited to Fielder as a DH as I can't see Pujols or A Gon DHing or switching positions.
  19. Ick. That's essentially a 5/125 deal.
  20. I'd have a hard time thinking of many examples of people who were really hurt by the aggressive promotions, but maybe they are out there. Fleita is definitely in charge of that though as well as somewhat dictating a minor league philosophy. He probably shouldn't be running the whole player development program although they can probably find a better role for him. Why not just find no role for him (I know it's kinda late to bark up that tree since they signed him)? What does he do especially well? His name sounds like some kind of delicious breakfast platter. I was thinking Sushi. I was shocked when I learned he was a garden variety white guy.
  21. This is basically the Peavy talks condensed into a much shorter period of time.
  22. Coming from the guy who threatened to fire bomb Australia. Come to think of it, I havn't seen Truffle around here since that threat. What did you do Kyle?
  23. He doesn't seem to like any of our guys.
  24. My thing with the Nomar trade is I still think we won it. We didn't get as much as we would have liked out of Nomar, but The Red Sox and Expos got even less out what we gave them. Of course Orlando Cabrera was a huge part of Red Sox 2004 ALCS. But does anyone really regret giving up Alex Gonzalez, Francis Beltran, Justin Jones, or Brendan Harris? We also got Murton out of that deal, who was a young, somewhat regarded prospect at the time who later helped net us Rich Harden who was huge for us in 2008.
  25. Pujols, please. I know it's somewhat irrational, but the idea of Fielder going the way of Mo Vaughn or Cecil while making close to $20M/year scares the hell out of me. And the fact that Pujols has been a much better hitter consistently and is a better fielder. I know Albert is older, but he just feels like a safer bet. Pujols seems to legitamtely love the Cardinals and their fans, and I'm not saying he'd take some massive discount to stay with them, but unless an offer was made that really blew everyone else out of the water I can't see him going to their chief rival.
