    Definite yes to Jurrjens. Wilson will be very expensive and nothing else is particularly appealing. Going by the model that got Greinke for the Brewers, how about Szczur, McNutt, and Lake would be a decent enough package.

    As would most reasonable people It was a much more difficult argument to make in 2000/2001. Looking back now I was a fool for taking Woody over Buehrle. No way in hell Buehrle signs with the Cubs. He's going to be a Cardinal. Back then, I would have taken Woody without question, but 2000/2001 me had no idea he'd one day be Dustied.

    'The Luger' would be a great baseball nickname. He'll have to get his velocity into the 90s to be worthy of such a nickname though. Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg arranged a press conference today to announce the Daniel Thieben singing is official. If The Hawk sees him blow a fastball by someone, I hope he know better than to say what he usually would.

    I wouldn't mind at all. If they want to give Sandberg an interview over Tito, go for it. Sandberg could be wearing uniform of the Hitlerburg Kidtouchers for all I care so long as he's not managing the Cubs. You don't even want to know what their sign for "bunt" is. If Sandberg went to the Cardinals, I can't even begin to imagine the apocalypse of meatball rage that would follow.

    He's a lifelong Cardinals fan who played his entire career with the White Sox and stated hed retire if he didn't get a desireable contract from a team he wants to play for. Bold prediction: Mark Buerhle will not be a Cub.

    Sorry, have to disagree there. If you look at all of the perennial contenders out there: Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, they have equal parts internal and external. This might be a good philosophy for a small market team, but with a team like The Cubs, you have the money, so spend it. Spending money is never a bad idea to build a winning team, it all depend how you spend that money.

    He's either got a good chance of staying, or Epstein is doing a very good job bluffing it in order to keep his trade value reasonable. Either way, I like it. That's exactly what it is. I'd be absolutely stunned if Zambrano played another game in a Cubs uniform. I can't see Epstein and Hoyer railroading him out of town for nothing. If they don't get the cash or prospects to make it worth while, he'll be back. I really can't imagine a new regime stepping in and their first big move is giving away a productive 18 million dollar pitcher for nothing.

    I have no problem with building from within as long as you can pick up some big pieces to build around through FA.

If Cubs were OK with Carpenter, and Boston demanded more, it's hard to see Selig going lower than that, isn't it? Can't we just give them Baker and Carpenter and make them go away?

    Intriguing? He'd be a must have. I wouldn't go that far. They're not going to just give him away and I wouldn't empty out the farm for him.

    Already posted? Well, dang. I'd take that as near confirmation. Though, wasn't Aramis a free agent briefly after 2006? Yup, and he was almost surely going to The Phillies or Angels, as was Soriano. Could just be the agent tryring to gain leverage, but in this case, I think we've seen the last of him.

    So if the Mariners did sign Fielder, would Justin Smoak be an intriguing trade candidate? The power seems to have started to show a bit.

    When it comes to defense, another thing that we need to consider is that the past 8 years between Lee and Pena we've had some of the best 1B defense out there and were often able to prevent Ramirez and Castros errant throws from ending up in another zip code. If we were to sign Fielder, we lose that and could end up with some very ugly infield defense.

    Probably not. I really think people are grossly overrating what those guys can do. I think Kyles the only one rating them that highly. Maybe Javier Baez well down the road, but who knows. The in house options are DeWitt, Flaherty, LeMahieu, and Baker. Maybe his 2010 numbers. Vitters will need at least another year, and I really don't see him replicating Ramirezez production. At this point I'm hoping for an .800 OPS at best from him. I'm not saying that non of the in house guys are acceptable options, but if you think they'll come close to Aramis' production, you're mad. For this arguement, you have to assume that the other guys will be enough of a defensive upgrade to make up for the offense. We know that DeWitts defense isn't much better than Aramis. I don't know too much about LeMa or Flaherty on defense, and Bakers offense is surely not enough.

    No point. I just don't see him being any kind of upgrade over Byrd. For Sizemore, I'd be willing to and move Byrd. However, DeJesus is what he is and what he's going to be and that's not something that the Cubs need in the position that they are in. If they're going to sign any FAs, it needs to be either guys that will help us win now or in the next 2 years or low risk/high ceiling guys like Sizemore and Maholm. Band Aids are not necessary. I'd just as soon go with an outfield of Soriano, Jackson, Byrd, and one of Colvin/LaHair. Don't get me wrong, DeJesus is a guy who could be very helpful to a contender, but on a 1 year deal, especially if we don't plan on making any kind of splash in addition, it's just pointless.
