  1. What is a ton of money, because I simply don't understand how we wouldn't have a significant amount available. Aramis, Kosuke, Bradley, Pena, and Grabow are off the books and take off Dempster, Zambrano, and Byrd after this season. Even with arbitration, we really havnt spent much at all.
  2. While I really want Cespedes, at 6/60 or 8/80, he'd be far from a low risk/high reward player. While I don't know much about Cuban baseball, I keep hearing that it's the equivalent of A+ here. This being said, for that money, if we were dying for a potential corner outfield bat, could attempting to trade for someone like Michael Taylor or Michael Saunders, who's teams would likely be willing to trade them for less than an arm and a leg but are younger than Cespedes and have had success at higher levels despite not doing anything in their limited time in the bigs?

  4. Maybe _______________ and Blake DeWitt, assuming ________________ is one of our top 15 prospects.
  5. Considering the Marlins were hoping to add a Pujols contract to their payroll this offseason, I'm not so sure a couple million will deter them let's not be naive, they were never signing pujols Even if they were, there's a big difference between going all in on the best player in baseball and using a big chunk of that money on a 26 year old prospect. I'd be Ok with giving him 6/60, or maybe even 8/80, although that's a stretch, considering that if he turns out to be a bust at 27 I wouldn't want to be paying him 10 mil when he's 34. If the Marlins decide to get ridiculous on him, more power to them.
  6. I would not be OK with that unless there was something else coming our way.
  7. There is a lot to disagree with in that mish mosh, but it's hard to disagree that the end result will likely be the Astros being the only thing keeping us out of the celler. 95-100 losses isn't entirely inconceiveable, but we could also hover around .500. It all depends on which of the buy low pick ups pan out and who can have a bounceback season, because we have plenty of candidates for it. Specific issues: the bottom 3 1B & 2B could all go either way. Same goes for 5th starter. Depending on Sorianos season, he could be anywhere between 3-6 of left fielders. as for our bullen(Jeff Samardzija, Kerry Wood, James Russell, Marcos Mateo, Scott Maine), we have a lot more options for the back of the pen than those listed.
  8. At least let us have Soler. Damn. I was excited when we signed DeJesus, not so much because we signed DeJesus, but because it lead me to believe that it was the first of several signings much like Mark DeRosa was in '06-'07.
  9. DeWitts problem is even if he was able to hit a bit better, which I think he could he really has no defensive home. He's bad at 2nd, and at 3rd we have Stewart and hopefully Vitters eventually. The best thing that can really be said about Cardenas is that he has a higher ceiling than all of the AAAA middle infielders we've scraped up.
  10. He's a worse version of DeWitt, but with that small chance that he suddenly lives up to his former top-100 prospect status. Everyone's getting boners lately for bad players who were in BA's 75-95 range four years ago. The main benefit is that the risk is minimal compared to the reward. Teams do seem pretty gung ho about failed top prospects the past few years, and I like the idea of the low risk/high reward pick ups, but I think that Jim Abbott could count on his right hand the number of times that these ex 75-95 guys really panned out for the team that picked them up. I guess they figure that teams have had some luck with ex top 50 guys in recent years, so maybe the top 75-100 could work out too. You're not going to find stars in that range but guys like Marquis, Gorzelanny, Wily Mo Pena, Taylor Bucholz and Matt Belisle have all been pretty good pickups for at least one team. These are mostly guys who already had big league experience and some degree of success when acquired by a new team, as opposed to guys who were once top prospects but never made the majors, or had at most a cup of coffee. The first group describes most of our pickups(Volstad, Stewart, Sonnenstine) but the latter seem to be getting popular, which is the catargory that Cardenas falls into.

  12. It says that he was DFAd January 26th, so they must have had some plans to claim him for at least a few days, so they should have had some time to shop him around. Then again, it could just be a placeholder thing, and they could be hoping to trade Byrd or Soriano and add DeWitt back if they were to trade one. Then again, one could argue that if they don't mind dumping someone that they just gave a >million dollar contract to, Reed Johnson would have been the better choice.
  13. But as of now, it's the whole 10 days to trade, release, or outright, right? If so, I'd assume that he's being shopped as we speak. Logic says that if there was anyone interested that they would have traded him rather than DFA, but it could be that they wanted to open the spot for Cardenas immediately and decided to worry about what to do with Blake when the time comes. While afwul at 2nd, I've heard that he's a solid defender at 3rd, and some teams might view him as a potential upgrade over what they have or at least a super-sub. From what I read from Goldstein, Cardenas has a decent hit tool but an awful defensive player at every position. Sounds like a slightly younger Blake DeWitt. He added that a DP combo of Castro and Cardenas would be an absolute nightmare.
  14. If it was a big league deal, then we likely are on the hook. Completely forgot about that. I doubt anyone will claim him because if there was any interest we likely would have traded him. Anyone with any interest would likely wait until he's a free agent if he makes it through waivers and get him for cheaper.
  15. But why? He was the most difficult Cub for me to watch as a fan, other than the occasional Soriano utter ridiculousness. Just one of those guys I always thought could be decent given a full time chance, especially if 3rd base was avaialble. I'd have personally preferred just trading Baker for whatever we could get.
  16. I dig the pick up, but while I'm probably alone in this, Im not a huge fan of DFAng DeWitt.
  17. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker&id=carden001adr Former 1st rounder, top prospect, 24 years old, plays all over the infield. Seems intriguing enough, certainly more so than most of the other scrap heapers we've scraped up.
  18. Yes. Collect and spend to collect better things...Ever check out how much prime star+ talent can hit the MLB FA market over the next 3-4 years? No doubt Justin Upton will eventually be traded...Felix Hernandez....A Zimmerman? That'd be sweet, especially the 3B one....Tim Lincecum...Stud talent will hit the trade market because teams might prefer the prospects to the picks. There will be a Josh Beckett trade. Maybe even two if Luck and Skill keep having threesomes with Theo. Oh God...you're back. He never left. Lol no, I did. Must be pretty devastating considering the raucous I caused before...All those insults I was throwing around and such. I was a havoc causing machine here who took no prisoners. Plus what I said up there was so unbelievably wrong. Now was that when you were Cubs GM, Men in Blue, Hollandsworths mug, or other? Hard to keep track sometimes.
  19. It is odd. Guthrie has had 3 seasons with a WAR over 4, and if nothing else is a strong mid rotation guy and leaving the AL East is always a plus for pitchers. I know he's a FA after this year but they easily could have got a lot more than a once somewhat touted almost 30 year old pitcher and a reliever who's had a decent season or 2.
  20. Probably. What it comes down to is who needs pitching and how badly. If a team is just looking for another front end guy for the stretch, we'd probably get about the same as we'd get now. If there are several teams with the same thing in mind, then perhaps we can get more. Of course, by then there could also be other options on the market that arent curently available. If a contending team loses one of their starters, especially a front ender, that's when we might be able to get the kind of package that Theo's reportedly been looking for.
  21. I fugure this would be a good place to keep these types of things rather than start a new thread each time or letting them get lost in the shuffle of the misc. transactions thread. Minor league deals w/invites Trevor Miller Ryan Rowland Smith Rodrigo Lopez Manny Corpas Jason Jaramillo Alfredo Amezaga Matt Tolbert Edger Gonzalez Joe Mather I guess these guys could be of value down the line if we do decide on a mid season purge of guys like Soto, Marmol, Soriano, DeWitt, Byrd, Baker, Russell, Dempster, Samardzjia, and Wells. Personally, if the situation came up I'd rather give some of our older minor leaguers like Marquez Smith, Mota, Weathers, Jay Jackson, and Cabrera the shot over these guys.
  22. Clearly you don't understand how crucial It is for a team to get older and more left handed.
