  1. SoSHs hopes went from Castro to Garza to Brett Jackson to McNutt to Szczur to Cashner to Vitters to McNutt to Lake to McNutt and most recently, Dolis or Beliveau. They got a guy who could be a shut down, back end reliever if he fixes his control issues. They act like we sent them Brian Schlitter. At this point, they should be happy they didn't end up with a plant and a thank you card. You're welcome.
  2. Can't get quite that excited until the CC-Meter hits 100%.
  3. Unless there is a clause in the contract that says he will (like the one Cespedes and Fukudome got) than no. It will be like what is happening to Samardzija now. If he doesn't have enough service time for arbitration (which seems likely), then the Cubs will be able to cut his last years salary by the full 20% if they want to, or they can choose to non-tender him at that point. Unless there is that clause though, he'd be under Cubs control for the 6 years of major league service time just like every prospect. Still don't get it 100%. Is the basic jist that no matter what, he's under our control for 6 years after his big league debut no matter what? I guess my main confusion about these types of deals is what they mean by major league deal if he'll be in the minors and not even on the 40 man. Does it just mean that he'll be getting paid more as opposed to standard minor league salary?
  4. If it's not something that extreme it's a pretty crazy deal. So he'd be, what, 23 when he's arb eligible then? At this point, he's essentially like getting a top 10 draft pick, the difference being that by the time he's big league ready he'll have, what, 2 years left under team control? However, if he really does look to be a superstar by the time that rolls around, we could just try and lock him up for another 8-10 years. The problem with Samardzija is that he is at that point and just now starting to show signs of life so it's a tough as for what to do with him at this point. Had 2011 not gone as well as it did for him, there's a decent chance that he'd have been gone by now.
  5. One potential ill affect of this proposal is that there are a lot of Wrigleyville businesses that rely heavily on baseball season and if the Cubs left Wrigley even for one season, it could have a rough effect on them. Baseball season is to them what Christmas season is to retail. I know people who have bar tended at some of those bars, and on a good night game, they can rake in a G. Even the offseason business that they would get could be turned off due to the construction.
  6. I believe it. The news that We were making a major push for Soler came out not too long before The A's landed Cespedes, so It's more than likely that Theo knew that it was happening which caused them to quickly turn his attention to Soler as quickly and aggressively as he did. This isn't to say that we weren't very interested in Soler all along, but with the knowledge that the A's, or at least somebody was close to landing Cespedes could have expedited the process.
  7. http://forums.prosportsdaily.com/showthread.php?t=694817&page=6 Of course it's not done done. He's not even officially a free agent. Besides, everything on at least the last page of that thread suggest that it is all but a done deal, hopefully meaning that as soon as he's granted free agency all that's left to do is sign the contract. I'm always guarded over these things until the contract's signed, but when the perennially cynical Kevin Goldstein is as confident about something as he is about this, I'll take to mean that an agreement is in place.
  8. you don't even bother reading any threads you post in anymore do you? He wouldn't have time to make 50 posts per day if he let little things like reading threads get in his way. Don't worry, you'll be back to that level as soon as the season starts and you become enraged over every play that doesn't go the Cubs way.
  9. you don't even bother reading any threads you post in anymore do you? Apparently I missed the part where that question was answered. Do enlighten me.
  10. Considering that our system was middle of the pack entering the offseason, with the additions of Soler, Rizzo, Concpcion, and Torryes, we'd have to be at least closing in on top 10 by now, right?
  11. He was reportedly spotted singing Go Cubs Go while running for his life as Fidel Castro shot at him from a tank.
  12. The mystery team has done very well for itself this winter.
  13. I like it, but I think it's just based off the same information already out there, the Cubs making very strong play for him story. It even still has Cespedes as likely to sign with the Marlins.
  14. Laissez les bons temps rouler He wasn't even very good in his prime and at the age of 39, there's a decent chance that he never lives up to the old Little Pedro moniker.Just let this one go Theo.
  15. I'd rather not sign anybody. It's ridiculous how much money professional baseball players get, it is way too risky. A lot of teams are making bad decisions right now. Really, really [expletive] bad ones. Ones which I would be [expletive] PISSED if the Cubs had made. Not speaking to Cespedes so much as Pujols and to a much larger extent, Fielder. Well, I won't lie and say I'd have been mad if we signed Pujols...but I would've been well aware that it was a pretty stupid decision. You don't know these are crippling decisions until you know what kind of budget these teams are working with going forward. I just know we're working on year 3 of every free agent signing (except CJ Wilson) being derided as moronic, and there haven't been many teams that have been torpedoed because of them. When a teams goal is to win it all now, thinking about what it will do to them in the future isn'y always considered. Yeah, it is possible to build for now and for the future, but The Angels and Tigers already had ready made contenders and decided to take it in that direction. Each of them made some very expensive acquisitions which in turn make them significanlty better, on paper anyway.
  16. So am I. I think he's been brought up on here before, recently, about a guy to target who seems to be in Theo's niche of finding former top prospects who might have fallen a bit for whatever reason. Any idea what it would take to get him? Or if we even have the right pieces to get him? The beauty of dealing with Billy Beane is that we could probably get him for a handful of guys we wouldn't even have thought of. Michael Saunders is another one that's the type Theo could target.
  17. Its always that damned mystery team. Looks like ownership decided to throw Billy a bone as a gift for signing that massive extension. The A's suddenly have a glut of outfielders and I'm quite intrigued by Michael Taylor.
  18. Someone asked Goldstein and he said he'd likely start out in low A and move up to high A depending on how things go.
  19. This is why he is ours. This is why Theo and Jed are all over this kid. This is exactly what we need in our system right now. All he costs is money, and we have the ability to blow down the doors before the new rules take effect. Soler is a Cub. I am actually remarkably comfortable calling it now with 100% certainty. Get mad all you want at me typing that, whatever. Get ready for the excitement ya'll. Jorge Soler is a Chicago Cub! Anything concrete leading you to believe this or just liquer induced giddiness?
  20. The fact is, if the Marlins best offer is 6/30-40 mil, we have the resources to beat it. If those making the decisions don't want to do so, then that's that and I trust their judgement. This being said, anytime te source is as vague ad this one it should always be taken with a grain of salt at most.
  21. Does the whole not yet ruled a free agent business mean that it could be quite some time before Soler signs with anyone?
  22. Haha, I thought this was a new thread and became disheartened when I skimmed through and saw this.
  23. If there was ever any legitimacy to the rumors of us being seriously in in the Fielder/Pujols sweepstakes, there's no reason that we shouldn't have the money for both. Acquiring good, young players had been Theos game plan from the get go and this would be a nice splash.
  24. Even if Garza is dealt, there would be an odd man out in the rotation. If we're where expected come the summer, chances are Dempster will be dealt as well. I agree that I'd like to give Samardzjia at the rotation. I'm assuming that Sonnenstine, Lopez, and Jackson will be competing as well. Does Wells have any trade value at all?
  25. It has to be White Sox and Orioles as the other two. Aren't the Tigers supposed to be in on him, too? I just can't see them making a huge offer for him, certainly not in the 8-10 mil/year range. They're already paying a combined 86 mil between Fielder, Cabrera, Verlander, Valverde, and V Mart.
