  1. So...then DeWitt won't? They are pretty redundant. That said, who am I missing here? Clevenger, Baker, Johnson, and likely Mather are all locks, and DeWitt and Campana are fighting for a spot. Even with Valbuena, that's a 7 man bench, and the only other people who could conceivably make the team are long shots like Sappelt, Cardenas, Amezaga, and Gonzalez(and I'm pretty sure those guys got sent to minor league camp already). It looks like they all make it. Just caught this on Twittet Could be that he either beat out DeWitt or a trade. If its a trade we'll have had to hear about it by the end of the day.
  2. A guy with a solid offensive ceiling but brutal defense? Couldnt we have gone with Cardenas? If he is on the 25, I'm going to guess that LaHair is hurt and some combo of Baker, DeWitt, and Mather will share 1st.
  3. It seems as though the trend these days is locking up young stars trough the bulk of their prime. This being said, I'm starting to wonder if we should have jumped on Fielder because who knows when another elite player is going to hit free agency. Kemp, Cain, and now Votto were all future free agent targets, and I'll be very surprised if the Phillies let Hamels get away, and I doubt that theres anyone who's going to outbid the Yankees on Cano.
  4. The fact that he's still around suggests that they have some interest in him, in which case there's absolutley no reason for them to send him away in favor of Rodrigo Lopez or Sean Camp. I'd give him a month or so and if he still hasn't found the strike zone, Rodrigo Lopezes and Sean Camps will be abundant if we don't have an internal replacement.
  5. It's not a problem, but we already have Camp and Corpas, and whatever we'd get on the cheap at this point would just be a lateral move. And why not give Castillo a month before sending him back to Philly?
  6. Where's Maholm? I'd assume traded if he's talking years end.
  7. RT @AdamRubinESPN: Mets sign Bobby Scales, who was w/ #Cubs. Will go to AAA. Unless it's just some brilliant April Fools Day ruse.
  8. The Sam Fuld to the Yankees classic is a tough one to trump.
  9. The Cubs cut him in Spring Training when he was 29. In 1992. Starlin Castro was a toddler.

  11. Have any big league players played until the age of 50, not counting guys like Minnie Minoso and Satchell Paige who popped up here and there for PR purposes for an inning or 2 here and there?
  12. He was announced as their No. 2 starter, behind Jeremy Guthrie. WTH was their rotation last year? You'd think these guys would be all about Randy Wells.
  13. Thats just it. Probably various encarnayions of Manny Corpas, Trevor Miller, and John Grabow. Middle relief is something that teams are always scrounging for around this time. I know Mike Wuertz us out there, but if there was any gas left in that tank someone would have scooped him up by now. There's nothing available through FA that would be a significant upgrade, and if they're thinking trade, how much are we willing to give up for mop up men? Once somewhat regarded Alfredo Simon was waived by the O's, so he'd be an option. It doesnt seem tbat long ago that I was thinking that our pen of Marmol, Marshall, Shark, Cashner, Carpenter, Russell and Dolis would be our strong suit.
  14. I'm not seeing the point. The internal options might not be great, but at this point what are we going to get that's worth paying for the minimal upgrade? Even if it's just some $250 K vet, I'd just as soon try Parker, Caridad, Gaub, etc. Devil's advocate: it's not like they don't have more than enough money. Obviously we don't want them going out there and giving out Eyre/Howry/Grabow contracts, but I'm really not going to lose sleep if they pay someone a small 1-year-deal. If there was someone out there who would be a legit upgrade for that, I'd be all for it, but at this point guys like Grabow are going to be what's out there. If we're looking for a middle reliever, cycling through internal options is likely the best bet, especially guys like Caridad and Parker whose days could be numbered.

  16. uhhhh wat NOTIMETOCHECKMUSTBEPOSTINGALWAYSBEPOSTING Crap. My bad. Still, replace Kershaw with Strasberg, and the sentiment remains.
  17. So we'll have Ryan Dempster on the mound being backed by this lineup vs. Clayton Kershaw. Fair enough. Go Cubs Win.
  18. I wouldnt be surprised if the Astros take a hot, steaming dump all over that cliche. I cant remember the last time I saw a team look that bad on paper.
  19. Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but that pretty much nails it. The Cubs have more players that could go either way than most teams and with them shall go the Cubs. Granted Volstad, LaHair, Mather, and Stewart are more likely to be bad than good and Maholm, Samardjzia, DeJesus, and Soriano are more likely to be decent than great but who knows.
  20. Brian LaHair at number 33.
  21. JOSH HAMILTON (DAMN YOU HENDRY) Don't forget Tim Lincecum.
  22. If all goes right and we hang in there enough to make a key deadline pickup or 2, 85 wins isn't out of the question. If they decide to back up the truck and liquidate in June, probably low 70's. A team has to be a special kind of bad to lose over 100 games.
  23. I keep forgetting about Corpas. If nothing else, I'd take him over Lopez any day of the week.
