  1. Perhaps the DL stint is just to give him time to practice his Vin Scully
  2. is cates one of the guys whose mechanics are being fixed? he was God awful in daytona. i pretty much know nothing about shane lindsay, but he's 27 years old and appears to have bounced around quite a bit. and his walk numbers are appalling. I believe so. He strikes me as an Aussie Casey Weathers. Nothing more to see here. I was responding about Cates. And I Lindsay. Sorry.
  3. They've both been out all season, which a big reason why they've been so awful. They're both in their early-mid 30's, so if they return to form next season, the Phillies could be right back in the division. Howard should be back to full strength by then, but it's tough to say with Utley. He's been banged up pretty often the past few years. It's really similar to the situation that the Cubs were in a few years ago, when it was cleaer that we had a roster full of expensive and aging players, but their were far too many of them and far too high of a pay roll to blow it up all together, and the farm system was lacking so all we could really do was sell them off as their contracts were set to expire and take what we could get.

  5. Sad to say that Volstad is probably a better option. Can't wait until August when we have a rotation of Samardzjia/Wood/Maholm/Wells/Volstad. There's the chance that Maholm's traded too, so we might just end up with Casey Coleman or Rodrigo Lopez in his spot.
  6. For a little while, I'd forgotten that there was a person named Zach Cates.
  7. Do the Phillies have anything worthwhile? Not sure how I feel about Domonic Brown at this point. Aren't they more likely to be sellers than buyers this season? They might trade Hamels if they decide they can't sign him, but even if they're 15 games out in late July, I can't imagine them as full on sellers since they have too much invested in the team to flat out rebuild. They'd be more likely to stand pat. Personally, I'd trade Barney for Brown in a minute, because like I said, I'd trade the promise of stability for the off chance of greatness.
  8. Hamilton has a shot to stick at short, which already gives him a leg up on Campana. He also doesn't pound the ball into the ground as much as Campana (who has had GB% numbers in the high 50's/low 60's whereas Hamilton is around the 50% mark). I'm not sure if Hamilton has that much more "real" power over Campana, but he's probably more of an offensive threat than Campana, and Campana's speed, which is plus, is not close to Hamilton's speed, which is plus-plus ... and hell, you can probably throw another plus in there for emphasis. Am I the only one who is reading that Hamilton/Campana comment as more of a knock against those Cubs fans who think so highly of Campana rather than an actual comparison of the players? I just kind of saw it as an accurate comparison between the two. The difference between one being a potential longterm starter versus the other, who's a backup, unless something really changes. Jersey would be correct. Campana may well end up a sufficent backu, but if you listen to your average Cubs fan, they see him as much more.
  9. Very good timing by the Astros. Now that Dempsters on the DL, there's really not much available to teams looking for starting pitching immidiately, unless Garza is on the block so they could get someone to really overpay.
  10. Billy Hamilton will likely become what most Cubs fans think that Tony Campana is.
  11. Colby's dad has blamed the Cardinals, primarily TLR for his woes and sais that the trade saved his career and he was thinking about quitting before it happened. Not sure how much truth is in it, but it's always nice to hear TLR blasted. http://www.thestar.com/sports/baseball/mlb/bluejays/article/1212808--colby-rasmus-s-career-saved-by-trade-to-blue-jays-father
  12. I wanted to say that Paul Bako was worse, but he managed an OPS of .611. Also, I thought that he was with us longer, but it was only 2 years, and it was 2003-2004 when we were actually good so a crappy backup catcher was forgiveable.
  13. Some DSLers who have caught my attention early: Jose Paulino: 2.40 ERA 15 IP 1/21 BB/K: somewhat depressing that he was born 2 months before I graduated high school. even more depressing is that I graduated high school almost 17 years ago. Daury Torrez (SP) 0.56 ERA 16 IP 0/15 Pedro Araujo (SP) 1.80 15 IP 2/12 Amalio Reyes (SP) 1.72 15.2 2/12 Carlos Rodriguez (SP) 1.20 15 IP 5/17 Victor Salazar (RP) 1.93 ERA 9.1 IP 4/11 Kelvin Encarnacion (CF) .343/.540/.657/1.197 3 HR 35 AB Enderson Mercedes (OF) .286/..381/.771 1.152 5 HR 35 AB. 16 K in those 35 AB though. Ouch. Jenner Emeterio (SS) .583/.615/.1.167/1.782: Just 3 games and 12 AB, but it sure looks nice.
  14. that's pretty much the brett jackson cycle turn the hit into a home run, and we have a smaller Adam Dunn.
  15. You could also say that tomorrow's pitching matchup is Randy Wells vs. Not Chris Sale or Jake Peavy, so I like our chances. These are opponents' numbers against Gavin Floyd over the past 4 weeks (100 PA): .344/.400/.689/1.089. That's good for an 8.27 ERA, 1.79 WHIP. With Randy Wells, it doesn't make much of a difference if he's up against Chris Sale, Jake Peavy, or Crappy McJunkball.
  16. Ugh, this needs to be fixed. That's a crime given how good the original was. Tomorrows pitching matchup is Randy Wells vs. Not Randy Wells, so I'm not liking our chances.
  17. Next year, the BP Cup will be ours. It will make a fine urinal.
  18. Does he need to go full count on every hitter?
  19. Well that sucked. And here comes Marmol to nurse a 1 run lead, so that's always...interesting.
  20. Somebody will be suckered into giving Peavy a 3/50 some million contract. I just hope they're not to surprised when he spends the majority of it on the DL. Good thing Hendry's not our GM anymore.
  21. Harry was always in the same boat as Ronnie to me. Nobody was ever going to accuse them of being the greatest announcers, but damned if they didn't make up for it with their charm, though I can imagine the opponents fans despising them.
