  1. Always good to send down a young, promising reliever in favor of another 30 something.
  2. Daury Torrez refusal to issue walks continues to intrigue me. In 14 games and 74.2 IP, he's only issued 4, 3 of which came in a 5 start stretch between 6/26-7/20, and has yet to issue one in his 5 starts since.
  3. Unless they like Hinshaw. I am starting to think that they have a pretty good idea that Camp and/or Corpas will be gone by months end, at which time they can flood the big league club wits as many of Iowa's spare parts as they like. We won't get anything of any value, but they're really of no use to us going forward, especially when they can just keep cycling through Alex Hinshaws and such. And of course there's Marmol. We could get something decent if we pick up most or all of his 2013 salary. By decent, I mean just that. Depending on the system, anywhere between someone's top 10-25 as well as a sweetener.
  4. Just in case anyone was wondering whether or not Justin Germano was the answer to anything other than "hey, who was that one guy who pitched a few game for the Cubs in 2012," there's your answer.
  5. BN with a little piece on Yeonnis Negrin, who recently materialized out of nowhere. The writer seems to think that he could potentially be a 3-4 starter or 7-8 inning guy out of the pen. I'm not sure that I can be as optimistic about a 28 year old pitching above A ball for the first time.
  6. Almora, Vogel, Candelerio, and Amaya went a combined 0-15 with 1 BB and 5 K. Yeesh.
  7. Yeah, he definitely doesn't have a ton of value, but there will be a team (or probably more) willing to sign him as a SS and he probably prefers to play short. That's why I said I'd be willing to give him more money than his best SS offer. Assuming he were taking one of those one year deals in hopes of building up his value, I'd think that he'd be more inclined to take less money to play short in order to maximize his porential value for future years.
  8. That will have to happen, yes. Bowden, Maine or maybe Beliveau is my guess. This is a longshot, but I wonder if there's a trade in the works. Nah. If they were to make a trade, they may as well just call up Dolis, who's already started his rehab, or else one of the guys we have stashed in Iowa.
  9. If Yao Lin Wang continues to string together strong starts for another few years, people might just have to acknowledge his existence.
  10. Good question. I'd be willing to pay him extra to make the move in hopes that it wouldn't become an issue, though. After the past two seasons, he's not exactly in a place where he has a ton of leverage. However, chances are he'll end up accepting a 1 year, incentive heavy deal as a gamble in himself, in which case someone is likely to pick him up as a SS for max value.
  11. What are the chances that Daytona postpones today's rain out and gets the games in?
  12. It will be interesting to see how this extension splits the fan base. There seem to be a lot of people against it, but then again, they're likely the same people who view Ryan Theriot as the one that got away and see Tony Campana as the face of the future.
  13. This is why people think Law and Goldstein are insufferable. A phrase like "extra guy at best" is just irritating and trolling. Up until this year, when Barney's WAR went through the roof, he was almost universally seen as a utility guy. So it's not that too far off base. Comparing Sczcur to Pierre is a good example of just irritating and trolling. A lot of fans get upset when these guy refer to a prospect or young player as a 4th outfielder, utility guy, or 4-5 starter, but those really aren't insults, assuming it's in reference to a fringy type of player and not a top prospect. However, it's hard to take the term "extra guy at best" as anything other than a knock on the player. If nothing else, Barney can be a great utility infielder with a decent bench bat for the next 5 years. Matt Tolbert's an extra guy at best.
  14. I feel like it's easy to forget how great of a career he's actually had. When you consider the fact that last year he hit 26 HR and had a .759 OPS and it was a bad year for him, it should be easy to remember.
  15. I tend to frequent Minors, Transactions, and Cubs Discussions, as well as new threads on the front page. So that's what I tend to browse. If the duplicate Prior thread is really a problem, someone could have merged it when it started several months ago.
  16. Perhaps searching the transactions forum instead of the general baseball discussions? [expletive], pick your battles.
  17. If a young Koyie Hill comes through your farm system, I have no problem using him as a backup catcher until something better comes along. The problem is when a team thinks that a Koyie Hill is anything more than a guy who can spell their starting catcher every 5 games or so.
  18. Now there's a flier I'd love to take out. Still, it's looking more and more like this story won't have a happy ending.
  19. I don't understand you, sometimes you're all about taking a chance on a washed up guy. Then other times you blast it. I'm all about reclamation projects that have a shot, be it a small one of producing high rewards. I have no interest in retreads that if all goes well could be something between Justin Germano and Rodrigo Lopez. Joke about my love of "fliers" but I'd take a 1 armed Scott Kazmir over a fully healthy Tomo Ohka any day. I just don't see the harm, they're AAA pitchers. They'll have no impact on anything that matters. Who knows, maybe one of them found a knuckleball somewhere. There's really no harm, unless they're blocking someone. I personally find the revolving door of retreads more comical than anything.

  21. I honestly feel as though the A's would appreciate Darwin Barney more than Vitters, especially since they could use him as a SS.
  22. Yesterday was Seth McClung. Today is Horacio Ramirez. Any guesses which pitcher who might have had a decent season several years ago will be scraped of the pavement for to start for the I Cubs romorrow? My money's on Brandon Backe.
  23. I don't see Youklis as an option. My bet is that Stewart will start at 3rd, with Vitters either in the OF or Iowa. There's no reason that Stewart shouldn't be given one more look post surgery. There's be a lot of :banghead: if we NT him and he becomes a .260/.800 something hitter with plus defense for somebody while Youklis spends the bulk of the year on the DL.
  24. My thinking continues to be that the money will be spent when the right thing is available to spend it on. Cole Hamels would have been the right thing, but we'll never know if he would have been an option for us. Now that he's off the market, I wouldn't be surprised if it was in fact more Maholm or DeJesus types, with a few Reed Johnsons mixed in. They all worked out pretty well. And it doesn't seem that there will be an end to stocking Iowa with random AAAAers either. One option that went from a huge contract to a low risk/high reward possibility is Melky Cabrera.
  25. Apparently, acquiring a top prospect for Maholm and Johnson has re-kindled their enthusiasm of piling up carcasses.
