    That says a lot when the top MVP candidates don't even have to play the field. That's what's wrong with the DH rule. and exactly why the AL rules the baseball world and why the NL is falling behind fast AL teams understand the need for good batters up and down the lineup, not the old traditional play for 2 runs crapola the NL plays off my soapbox now Then why not go all the way and have a 9-man offensive team and a 9-man defensive team that plays the field. The offensive team could be made up of all-steroid enhanced 230 pounders since they wouldn't have to play the field. Barry Bonds could play until he's 70 and hit 2500 HRs.

    Ah, but I didn't say he shouldn't, I just don't think he will. God forbid we ought to have 2 right-handed power hitters as an option off the bench. He ought to go after Wilson and sign him for a few more years. Nevin is a temporary (this year) solution.

    To sum it all up, not exactly the blockbuster trade everyone was hoping for, but Nevin seems to be more of what the Cubs need at this point than JHJR. The deal certainly would have looked better 3-4 weeks ago. As for pushing Walker back to 2B and wondering what to do with Womack, it does open the possibility of Walker as trade bait especially if the Cubs go into a "sell" mode. As for all of the negativity about obtaining a 35 year old, overpriced, and washed up veteran, realize that Pujols wasn't available.

    ..yep..Wood and Prior have really exposed our pitching "prospects". Hill, Guzman, and Ryu likely had some type of trade value before this season. Guzman will get better. Ryu is not that bad. I dont know what to make of hill. I just wonder what kind of deals Hendry turned down because the other teams wanted Ryu, Guzman, or the "untouchable" Hill. When Hendry was interviewed during Saturday's Fox broadcast, he mentioned that he had talked to a lot of teams and was even willing to "overpay" to get a replacement for Lee. If these three don't start showing something you can kiss their trade value goodbye. Of course teams with a real pitching coach might still see their value.

    I don't mind starting Womack because he might bring a little spark to the top of the lineup. To tell the truth, it might not hurt to give Pierre a day or two off, put Hairston in CF, and bat Womack at leadoff. If Womack can add a little spark for a few weeks, so be it. If he cools off, put Walker at 2B when Lee comes back.

    You wonder if it was just a bad decision or a desperate move because the offense hasn't been scoring runs. With this slump continuing, you see a lot of mistakes (swinging at bad pitches, trying for a HR, etc.) because of the desperation.

    Sammy is not allowed back on the Cubs because he might actually hit a ball out of the infield.

    I hope the media keeps the pressure on Baker and Hendry. I hope it gets so hot, the Baker doesn't even think about taking the extension, and just leaves. Dream on.

    Actually, AJ was innocent, wasn't he? Well, the same people who looked at the tape and gave Barrett his suspension are the ones who decided that AJ did something to cause a fine. The league office has the only opinion that counts and they fined AJ. My point is that the Sox act like they had no part in the brawl, they were just innocent bystanders.

    Say what you will about Barrett (he deserves 10 games, he doesn't deserve 10 games, etc.), the White Sox are in disbelief that anybody on their team should be punished. Were the Cubs brawling with themselves? According to them, AJ is innocent and Anderson & Cora didn't do anything. What a crock!!!!!

    he gave him 3 years cause other teams were offering him 2 and he didn't want encanarcion, sanders and burnitz. sure he likes him, but he doesn't "covet" Jones-types. that's absurd. he covets beltran-types, but the trib doesn't covet 7yr and 119 contracts. What is absurd is the fact that it's true that Hendry likes Jones type players. It's painfully obvious to anybody that has paid attention to Hendry moves and/or listened to what he says he likes in a player. I still say Hendry "likes" Jones because the alternative was to trade Pie, Zambrano, Prior, etc. The 3 year deal was the only way he could sign Jones, but again it is not a no-trade 3 year deal. Looking at the other free agent choices, it wasn't a bad decision as long as Jones moves to CF, is used in a platoon, or is eventually traded.

    You keep saying that, and you keep ignoring the replies. Jim Hendry wanted Jones. He's exactly the type of player Hendry looks for. Hendry is signed through 2008. The Cubs are stuck with Jones. If they were smart enough to clean house, then a new GM might be able to come in and move him. But that's not likely, so the slim chance of dealing Jones is practically zero. People say the Cubs are stuck with Jones because people realize how the Cubs work. I still don't agree. I think Hendry looked at the hole in RF, looked at what other teams were asking in trade, and looked at the free agent market and decided that Jones was the best fit. I'm sure if he offered Pie, Zambrano, Prior, etc. during the off season he could have had a better RF, but the cost was too much.

    You might have a lineup with Womack, Pierre, and Blanco. Not exactly the 1927 Yankees.

    Am I missing something? Why does everyone insist that the Cubs are stuck with Jones for 3 years? Does he have a no-trade contract? I've read this at least 3 dozen times and I've reponded many times. Trading Jones should not be a problem with 2 years and $10 million owed on his contract, especially if the Cubs eat $1 -2 million per year. I can't believe that teams wouldn't be interested in Jones for 2 years @ say $7 million. Of course, that's assuming the Cubs want to trade him. Moving him to CF and ditching Pierre or getting a big bat and having a platoon of Murton/Jones are looking like possibilities.

    I think Jones can be dealt with the Cubs eating part of his salary. He is owed $5 million per year for 2 more years. That's not too outrageous, but if the Cubs eat 1-2 million, then I think a lot of teams might be interested. I'm getting the feeling that Womack will be our 2B and leadoff hitter for the 2nd half and maybe 2007.

    The OF will be changed with Pie, Carlos Lee or Cabrera, and Murton or Murton/Jones platoon.

    I don't think your #1 is necessarily realistic. I think it's necessary, but not necessarily realistic as far as what the Cub will actually do. Hendry has his extension, Baker's is all-but-announced, Rothschild will be rewarded for turning down the Tiger's offer and returning to the Cubs, and Spier has seemed to do a decent job (unlike Clines and Sarge).
