I'm sure a good business man isn't going to increase payroll until the deal is finalized. As for when the Cubs go after Peavy, I'm sure a lot will depend on other factors (Harden's health, Marshall's success, etc.). Waiting for the trade deadline could get complicated if the Padres get Peavy to agree to include other teams in his waiver of a NTC.

I can't think of any reason why the Padres would want Hoff when they have a great young 1B (Gonzalez) and a top 1B prospect (Kyle Banks).

But then we wouldn't have a leadoff man. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: -
Bobby Crosby?
Backtobanks replied to UMFan83's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
I don't see why the A's would like a bum like Vizcaino but I would like to see this trade take place. Two reasons: 1. They have 1 SS too many. 2. We have better options for the bullpen. They would be trading 1 high-priced bum for another plus they get a prospect. Hopefully it would be a low-level prospect. Just saw on MLBTR: Speaking of Crosby, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune wonders if the Cubs could work out a deal involving reliever Luis Vizcaino. Despite the $4MM owed to Vizcaino, he's not a lock for the Cubs' bullpen. We learned last week that the Cubs do not appear interested in Crosby. -
Would they consider trying Jake Fox back at catcher?
Backtobanks replied to Little Slide Rooter's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
I posted a while ago that he might be an interesting option for the bench if he can hit with some power off the bench and fill in at 1B, 3B, LF, and emergency catcher. He may be pretty bad as a catcher, but he has to be at least as good as Murton or Neifi Perez were as emergency catchers. -
Grudz
Backtobanks replied to Little Slide Rooter's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
If Grudz is past his prime then why haven't his numbers dropped off? I guess that I should have specified that he's past his prime defensively and can only back up 2B. Offensively, Grudz and Durham can still do okay. -
Bobby Crosby?
Backtobanks replied to UMFan83's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
Crosby is terrible and we should want no part of him. That being said, Vicaino plus a prospect is really overpaying for Crosby. The A's will definitely have to eat 4-4.5 million unless they take back a really bad contract (won't happen). -

I found it on the internet. If it was my trade idea there would be at least one more team involved.   -
And you've been wrong all along. 1. He's still there, so they can afford him for now. 2. Peavy will go to any team that will pick up his option. What about that do not understand? Let me repeat it in case you didn't catch it. PEAVY WILL GO TO ANY TEAM THAT PICKS UP HIS OPTION. PEAVY WILL GO TO ANY TEAM THAT PICKS UP HIS OPTION. PEAVY WILL GO TO ANY TEAM THAT PICKS UP HIS OPTION. Do you really honestly think he'd turn down a trade to LA, Mil, NYY, Sea, or any other club willing to pick up his option because he's so dead set on being a Cub? He's still there for 2 reasons: 1. The Cubs had to wait for the ownership situation to clear. 2. Peavy repeatedly stated that he would only waive his NTC for the Cubs (and Braves before they dropped out) so there weren't any other parties involved. Will he change his mind about other teams? Apparently you are a mind reader by stating as fact that he will okay a trade TO ANY TEAM THAT WILL PICK UP HIS OPTION, but until he says that I'm going by what has been reported. Judging by your join date, I assume you've followed baseball long to recognize his posturing as a common negotiating tactic, that's been used many times by many players before. He'll go to whomever gives him the best financial terms. They always do. So why did he agree to waive his NTC for the Cubs and Braves without any discussion about picking up his option? While I agree with you about most (not all) players taking the best deal (some opt for a winner or a location), I'm sure that most major-market teams would extend him barring an injury.

Yeah. Poor guy. How can one reasonably expect to live any sort of comfortably on a lousy $10 million a year? I wonder if he can qualify for welfare on that sort of pay. Juan Pierre is making like 10 million a year, isn't he? I can understand him not wanting to play for that annual salary. I'm not saying that it isn't a lot of money, just that it makes a lot more sense for him to turn it down knowing that info. Is zero dollars for zero years more palatable? Back to the basic question. With little to no interest from the rest of baseball, what terms are Boras and Manny expecting, market value? I don't hate him for turning down the deal and trying to get a better one. I find it comical that his camp thinks it has some kind of leverage. No matter how much he helps the Dodgers, they're not going to guarantee him anything more than what he turned down. Considering that they keep running back to him with new offers, why do you think they're suddenly finished doing that? They've made a few early offers. One for a single year, and the latest a 2 year deal with deferred money. That's not exactly running to him with new offers. They have stayed in the same money area that they started. I haven;t heard of another offer from anyone. It's March. I think if the Giants were sincerely interested they would have made an offer by now. They are likely waiting to see the talks with the Dodgers fall apart so they can get him cheaper. Most teams yearly profit margin is what Manny is asking for. With the state of the economy not hitting baseball on a everyday basis yet, few teams are going to be willing to outbid the Dodgers. McCourt indicated that with the recent economic downturn, the Dodgers' financial parameters might be different from what they were even four months ago. "Every day things are changing, and we need to be mindful of that,'' McCourt said. "We kept our offer virtually where it was in November. And you know what? The world isn't anything like it was in November. So we're going to start fresh and look at this the way we'll look at it sometime next week.'' That doesn't sound like a guy who thinks he's in a weak bargaining position. I predict Manny and Boras will take the first offer (1/$25 mil) if the Dodgers resubmit it and try their luck again next year. Clearly, the one thing we can almost safely predict, is that the dream of a 3 to 4 year deal is not going to materialize in this market. At the end of the day when you pimp your way out of Bostons $20 mil in '09 for the Dodgers $25mil, one can safely assume it was all about the money for that turdball. The problem with taking the 1 year deal and going the FA route again next year is that Manny will have to be motivated and interested for a whole year. That's not easy when you're basically unmotivated and disinterested.

I think he is an Angels fan, but the Padres would be getting quite a few top prospects. When a team trades a superstar (or two) for prospects, it always looks one-sided. Getting prospects is always a crapshoot because there are only a few "can't miss" prospects around. The Padres aren't going to be a decent team for the forseeable future with or without Peavy and/or Gonzalez. As I posted earlier, it will never happen. it is? I think most fans enjoy reading and speculating about "rumored" trades. That's why the offseason, trade deadline, message boards, and fantasy leagues are so popular. -
That's it. What's the point of having a Shilling if he's just going to put up a 5 ERA? His aura doesn't get to pitch. why would he put up a 5 era? he's done that once since he became a starter in 1990. which was in 2005, when he two thirds of the games he pitched in came out of the pen. that was the only year since 94 his era has been over FOUR. really, there's zero reason to assume that he won't be effective. it's just a question of is he healthy? I can think of at least two reasons why he won't be effective: 1. He's really old. 2. He hasn't pitched in quite a while.

Trade between SD and LAA mentioned in a fan's blog: From Anaheim to San Diego go the following: Nick Adenhart, Dustin Moseley, Shane Loux, Kevin Jepsen, Erick Aybar, Freddy Sandoval, Matt Brown, Kendry Morales, Reggie Willits and Terry Evans. From San Diego to Anaheim: Jake Peavy and Adrian Gonzalez. The Padres get a new team, virtually, and the Angels have a powerhouse that causes tremors throughout the game. Bud Black adds three starters (Moseley, Adenhart, Loux) while subtracing one. He gets a future closer in Jepsen. He gets a superlative shortstop in Aybar and a kid from Tijuana (Sandoval) who can play three infield positions and hit. He gets a quality corner infielder in Brown and a first baseman in Morales to replace Gonzalez. He gets an outfielder (Willits) who can play all three spots and will produce a 370-.380 on-base percentage and 40-50 steals leading off as an everyday player. And he gets a power hitter in Evans who can leave any yard. Mike Scioscia gets one of the best pitchers alive in Peavy and a first baseman in Gonzalez who is very close to the equal of Mark Teixeira. The Angels still have plenty of quality reserves left over, owing to an astonishing stockpile of talent. Yes, they add payroll with Peavy and Gonzalez, but the long-term benefits are immense. The Padres get almost 60 years worth of contracts at an immediate cost of roughly $4 million for the 2008 season. The Angels have Peavy and Gonzalez locked up for at least three more years apiece. This would not be a half-season of Teixeira. Peavy gives the Angels the Majors' dominant rotation; Gonzalez is a No. 4 hitter who, free of PETCO Parks dimensions, hits about 40 homers and drives in close to 140 runs behind Chone Figgins, Bobby Abreu and Vladimir Guerrero. It would never happen, but it's interesting to speculate.

I've been posting all along that Peavy will end up on the Cubs. The facts remain the same as always: 1. The Padres can't afford him. 2. Peavy has a NTC and will only waive it for the Cubs. 3. The Cubs want him and are one of only a few teams that can afford him. I still think that part of the reason for DeRosa deal was to load up on young pitching to either use in a Peavy deal or replace pitching going to SD in a Peavy deal. The only hangup has been the sale of the Cubs, because I think a package of players could be agreed upon by both sides. Peavy would be owed about $5 million for 2009 at the trade deadline. The Cubs could have Harden ($7 million), Gregg ($4.2 million), Viscaino ($3.5 million), Gaudin ($2 million), Heilman ($1.6 million), Cotts ($1.1 million), and Johnson ($3 million) coming off the books after this season to help with Peavy's $15 million next year.

Final Bench Job Hoffpauir's to Lose
Backtobanks replied to vance_the_cubs_fan's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
I didn't mean that he ought to be given a roster spot because he's your emergency catcher. My point was that if he could deliver some right-handed power off the bench and back up 1B/3B/LF he might be worth thinking about. His experience as a catcher would be a plus, but only in an emergency. I think Murton was the emergency catcher a few years ago, so he would have to be better than that. -
From MLBTR: Lefties May Be Lowering Contract Expectations By Drew Silva [February 25 at 9:08pm CST] FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that the agents for left-handers Joe Beimel and Will Ohman are prepared to offer more flexibility in contract negotiations with clubs. "I would suggest any team holding back on some last-minute interest step forward and express it," Beimel's agent, Jeff Sroba said Wednesday. "Not that anything is imminent, but we are offering flexibility." Beimel, who turns 32 in April, has drawn interest primarily from the Dodgers this offseason. He went 5-1 with a 2.02 ERA for Los Angeles last season. Ohman, 31, has deals on the table from the Pirates, Marlins and Padres, but is reportedly hoping the Phillies, Dodgers or Mets will come calling. He finished 4-1 with a 3.68 ERA last year for the Braves. "We're offering flexibility, too," said Ohman's agent, Page Odle. "We're hoping one of the playoff teams will want that shutdown lefty." Dennys Reyes is another left-handed reliever without a job. He went 3-0 with a 2.33 ERA for the Twins last season. Any of these guys are better than Cotts. I know Ohman is out of the question, but at a very favorable deal the other two might be tempting.

"He traded DeRosa and signed Miles on the same day. If he didn't trade DeRosa, he wouldn't have signed Miles, it's as simple as that. It was one or the other." Dex, that's not necessarily true. He might signed Miles at a later date (if available) to replace Cedeno. I tend to agree with Cubsfan 26, in that you have to look at all the players that left and all of the players they added to do any kind of comparison. I think the closest you can come to making one-to-one replacement comparisons would be Gathright-Pie and Hoff-Ward because the new players will be used in almost identical situations with the old players.

Why? DeRosa was the versatile veteran making a few million to play regularly at 2B and fill-in at multiple positions. But he only hit RH. Miles is the versatile veteran making millions, who replaced him. Miles was brought in to play many positions and bring "balance" to the lineup. They wanted to get more LH and he is the only guy on the roster brought in to replace a RH in order to accomplish that goal. There's no reason not to compare the two. I'm using a much simpler explanation. Miles was brought in as a sub middle IF who can play other positions in a pinch. That role for the past few years was Cedeno's and not DeRosa's. DeRosa was brought in to be the starting 2B and was versatile enough to play other positions in case of injuries. Therefore, Miles is replacing Cedeno. The simple explanation is DeRosa left and Miles replaced him. Cedeno averaged 150 PA a year under Piniella. Miles, as the only backup infielder, and very likely platoon option at 2B, is going to dwarf that number. There is no replacement for Cedeno, as of now. DeRosa had over 500 ABs last year and the year before for the Cubs. He was a starter. Miles might get more playing time than Cedeno, but he won't be playing as much as DeRosa unless there is a catastrophic injury. I would imagine Rivas or someone else might make the roster as an additional IF. My point is that there is no fair one-to-one comparison to DeRosa on this team. Using your explanation, you could say Bradley replaced Edmunds.

But you still have the at bats missed by Aramis, Soriano and Bradley when/if they get injured. That will be quite a few ABs - especially for Bradley. Had we still had DeRosa, those ABs would have gone to him. Now, they'll be mixed around among Miles, Hoff and Gathright. That's why the DeRosa trade hurt so much. I agree that I would have tried to keep DeRosa, but I guess Hendry felt like he was the one that had to go for whatever reason (salary, need to be more LH, etc.). Once before you posted that time missed by Soriano and Bradley would be covered by Miles, Gathright, and Hoff, but I would think Johnson would get more of the OF ABs over Gathright if someone is injured.
-
We can throw names around all day, but I still have problems with comparing DeRosa with Miles. DeRosa was a starter who played many positions while Miles was brought in strictly as sub. Obviously their contracts and production are different partly because of that. The way I look at it, Miles is replacing Cedeno not DeRosa.
