  1. i gotta say. i'm pretty impressed the cubs didn't flat out roll over and die and the pen has come in and done their job. now, let's see how far down the slope this roller coaster goes. it's dipping pretty good right now.
  2. the roller coaster ride heads down hill today. cubs suck.
  3. how long until he's back in the rotation replacing someone?
  4. Does anyone know the origin of the phrase barnburner for referring to a very close sporting event? Lewis Joplin II Barn burner/the Barnburners - "According to an old story, there was once a Dutchman who was so bothered by the rats in his barn that he burned down the barn to get rid of them. Thus a 'barn burner' became one who destroyed all in order to get rid of a nuisance. In the 1840s and 1850s there was a faction of the Democratic party in New York State opposed to the extension of slavery in the territories, and the name Barnburners was given them by their opponents. Most of the Barnburners later became Free-Soilers." From "Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins" by William and Mary Morris (HarperCollins, New York, 1977, 1988). A second source defines "barnburners" as "persons demonstrating uncompromising determination, even at risk of total loss; practitioners of the art of the impossible. The word originally designated the antislavery wing of the Democratic party in New York State in the 1840s led by Martin Van Buren and his son, John. The name was devised by the 'Hunkers,' a Democratic opposition faction, to ridicule Van Buren's radical approach 'in the manner of the Dutch farmer who burned his barn to destroy rats...'" From "Safire's New Political Dictionary" by William Safire (Random House, New York, 1993). In reference to an exciting event, I would imagine "barnburner" did originate with the crowd gathering when somebody's barn burns: BARNBURNER - "Barnburners were members of a faction of the Democratic Party in New York State from about 1830-50, so-called because they were so zealous for reform in the party that they would burn the barn (the Democratic Party) to get ride of the (pro-slavery) rats... 'Barnburner' is used by wildcat oil men for a big well, a gusher, a strike that lights up the sky..." From "Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins" by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997). "Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang, Volume 1, A-G" by J.E. Lighter, Random House, New York, 1994, has the first meaning: 1. Pol. a radical member of the Democratic party of New York State...1841, 1845, and, 2. an exciting or excellent thing, person, or time; a humdinger; (specifically) a strong hand in the game of bridge."" hey look, there's an interweb in front of ya!
  5. stupid schticks. dude, 1988 called and wants it's terrible white boy blues back.
  6. it's a mirage. put it out of your mind. you've been out in the heat too long. you are seeing things.
  7. I don't think the heavy stuff's gonna come down for quite a while thanks, carl
  8. the downhill slope of this terrible roller coaster ride starts today.
  9. time for the roller coaster ride to head back down the hill.
  10. the problem is, he is. watched him a ton last year here in nashville. he's good.
  11. cedeno was knocking he cover off of the ball here in nashville this past week. made some really great defensive plays as well. i know of 4 times that cedeno made solid contact and was robbed in incredible defensive plays. two times in the last game of the series in his first two at bats
  12. he had some really good swings and was very patient here in nashville this past week. didn't always produce an on base situation, but looked like he was settling in.
  13. cute face, but she has no lips, broad man shoulders and i'm betting she has man-hands!
  14. i don't like that hitch in pie's swing. i also don't like the fact he jumps out of the way of every pitch on the inside corner. he can't get to any ball inside.
  15. lou giving soriano the hand slaps. i want to see lou jumping up and down and doing a dance giving five to everyone
  16. Nice to see they are giving the kids a few lessons down on the farm. Would just hate to throw them willy nilly into the real Fight club. They might get brokened. (that is purposely misspelled at an attempt of humor) rapada hit the kid right in between the shoulder blades. rapada has got great arm strength.
  17. Might as well bring him up at this point. He can't be any worse than the garbage we put out at SS anyway. We really, really need a new SS. i was at the game last night. ronny should have been 2-3 with 2 walks. he was robbed on two occasions. in his first at bat laynce nix made an incredible catch on what would have been a double. then in his second at bat he has a hard hit ball up the middle that was snagged on a diving play by the shortstop for a force at 2nd to end the inning. really great defensive plays. ronny also had a bare-handed play at shortstop on a hard hit ball that took a bad bounce. he looked really good
  18. Greatest Cub catcher since Gabby Hartnett. i was going to say Sandy Martinez
