they better sign a shortstop then. neifi won't backup Cedeno. of course, cedeno doesn't need a neifi to back him up either. sigh. if they re-sign macias, I'm not watching next year.

I think there are some good points there as to contracts not signed can be a good decision. There weren't too many signings last year that made me say "the Cubs should have done that."

Well, except that they just pasted the living crap out of an unbeaten Va Tech team that looked to have a stronger profile than Texas up to that point, and they did it on the road. Other than that I wholeheartedly agree. Who has VATEch beaten? I've never been too impressed with them. The Miami game was just confirmation that they aren't a top team.

this thread is depressing - if we give up walker and hairston to play cedeno and neifi or furcal and neifi, it will really show that hendry doesn't get it. I can live with defense at SS but for goodness sakes, you have to upgrade the offense elsewhere.

I think you are being a bit hard on Burrell. His splits aren't terrible on the road and his BABIP is only slightly above Abreu's. I don't think he would have any trouble hitting for power at Wrigley. In addition, he is a power hitter entering his prime. His 2004 is just as likely if not more likely to be a fluke than his 2005. I would try to hang on to Pinto if I were the Cubs.

unless he is fleecing someone, hendry shouldn't trade walker. he is exactly the type of player the cubs need to add, not subtract.

Depending what is required, I would opt for Burrell over Abreu if it saves a lot of top prospects. He also has the advantage of age.

that may be, but nonetheless, miami is where it is because they started ranked high and lost early. there is no reason to think they are better than other one loss teams except for where they started.

rankings are based on reputation. this is why preseason rankings should not exist. teams like ND, Michigan, Nebraska are always rushed into the rankings if they start out low. they get the benefit of the doubt based on history and fanbase.

they don't have to follow the rankings for at-large bids. notre dame has their own set of rules to qualify - I forget exactly what they are but they have to have a certain number of wins and be ranked so high (or maybe bcs standings so high I don't remember). The point is if Notre Dame is close to a BCS, get them in to make money. And that's not meant as a slam on notre dame so much as the system. greed pre-empts any notion of who is deserving.
