  1. how do you live knowing you are so wrong Make your case. I'm listening. well it's a waste of breath arguing opinions, but I didn't want Skynyrd to win the first round much less this one. I think they are a niche, hillbilly band who have been idolized by the NASCAR crowd. Now they are a travelling cover band Is Paul Rodgers fronting Queen any better?
  2. Maddux's 3 year splits (03-05) have his post All-Star ERA at 3.45, as opposed to 4.61 pre All-Star. I think there are several teams who would jump at the chance to have him in the backend of their rotation during a playoff push, taking a chance on Maddux having a strong 2nd half.
  3. He is a jerk.....but he kicks ass on the 'skins'. Lars Ulrich is not a good drummer. and the Clash is not a good band, so there you have it. plus good drummer or not, lars co-wrote most of their best music I wasn't questioning his songwriting ability, nor did I say anything about the Clash. I was correcting cubweiser03, because Lars is a second rate drummer at best. what makes him second rate? His one dynamic level - LOUD. The man plays with zero dynamic contrast, and I don't think he's ever played an unaccented note in his life. Back in the day he had fast feet, but that was it. Any idiot can crank out a ton a double-bass notes, but that doesn't make them a good drummer. And he's a very sloppy live drummer. I've heard a number of bootlegs where the sloppiness is almost embarrassing. Fortunately for Lars, Hetfield is probably the greatest metal rhythm guitarist ever. So even if Lars has a trainwreck, Hetfield is able to keep a song together.
  4. I hate Lars too, but Metallica's 80's output is tremendous. All of the Cliff albums are among my all time favorites, with Master of Puppets possibly being my favorite album ever.
  5. I'd like to second that and also throw the 'over-rated' tag on REM. I just never understood where all the REM hype came from. And while everything from 'the Elder' on is pretty lame, 70's KISS was great. It's a shame that they've become such caricatures of themselves that no one will look at any of their music seriously again.
  6. Pearl Jam begat Creed. Which former member of Pearl Jam started Creed?
  7. I guess I'm an idiot. I enjoy Sonic Youth, and I really, really don't care for the Doors. Sorry.
  8. Actually weren't the first 2 or 3 Foo Fighters albums written and entirely played by Dave Grohl? He only had a band for touring purposes up to that point. I don't know if you could be more of a solo artist than that.
  9. Because the Beatles were unlike any band before or after. They constantly reinvented themselves and still stayed relevant. Nirvana was an outcome of good timing and good music video. Bands like the Pixies, The Smiths, Sonic Youth, and even Nirvana's contemporaries like Pearl Jam or Sound Garden are much better musically and had they had Nirvana's timing/video/publicist/lead singer's charisma they would have been bigger. Nirvana was an image that kids liked. Their songs aren't even that good. I couldn't disagree more - and even if so the same could be said about the Beatles - their early popularity involved a lot of screaming teenagers IIRC. The timing was right and the videos were good, but without the songs it wouldn't have mattered.
  10. Oh my. That is quite the statement. I was referring to this poll as far as the Beatle-love and the Nirvana-hate - I should've made that a little clearer
  11. I find it odd that while the Beatles are so revered, Nirvana, who is also one of the most critically acclaimed bands of our lifetimes, gets bashed so repeatedly. Personally, I'd rather listen to any Nirvana album than the best Beatles album.
  12. This has been the toughest vote for myself so far. I greatly enjoy Bon Scott-era (and Back in Black too) AC/DC, but FNM is one of my absolute favorite bands ever. FNM is probably the most influential/least acknowledged band of the 90's.
  13. Depends on what your view of talent is. Songwriting is a talent. Instrumental skill is a talent too. And while I totally agree that the Beatles are one of the greatest and most influential rock bands of all time, Megadeth is one of the greatest and most influential metal bands of all time. As far as technical guitar playing in a metal-context goes, anyone would be hard-pressed to top the guitar work on Megadeth's RIP or Peace Sells albums.
  14. Jones and Walker sent to the 60-day DL with broken backs. Ramirez avoided injury due to his determination not to carry any part of the team. How painfully true.
  15. This thread was much more entertaining when Rusch was pitching. Watching Guzman come in and do well is definitely a mood-killer.
  16. If Guillen really wanted to light into someone, why not Vazquez? Why didn't Vazquez, who had nothing to lose by getting tossed, hit somebody? Shouldn't a veteran of Vazquez's status know the protocol in this situation? It really says something when your catcher gets nailed twice and your starting pitcher, who has ample opportunity to retaliate, doesn't defend him.
  17. You know what's REALLY funny about this order? You could completely invert it and have a better lineup. Cedeno Murton Jones Ramirez Nevin Barrett Perez Pierre Maddux Cubs 7 and 8 hitters combined OBP - .671. Cubs 1 and 2 hitters combined OBP - .514. At least Maddux will have a chance to drive someone in.
  18. Am I the only one who read this and thought "What the heck are they bringing Sosa out of retirement for $8mil for? And what does that have to do with Samardzija?" It will be a long time before any reference to 'Sammy' in any Cubs conversation will not bring Sosa to mind.
  19. If I was a betting man, I'd go with Prior.
  20. The stage is set for a new low - Z and the bullpen combine for a no-hitter, yet the Cubs manage to lose 1-0, despite hitting 10 singles themselves.
  21. Problem is.... he was hitting in the #6 hole that day !! Neifi hitting in the 6-hole is a problem. Neifi hitting anywhere is a problem.
  22. He'd destroy it. I could see Henderson hitting about .220, and still beating Pierre's OBP by about .100. Outside of DLee, Henderson would probably lead the Cubs in OBP if he came back. Wow, is that sad.
  23. I can see it now - Canseco in LF, Sosa in RF, Palmeiro at 1B. What's McGwire and Rickey Henderson doing these days? :D
  24. A fire sale scares me now as much as anything. Instead of just screwing up the 2006 season, Hendry could conceivably cripple the Cubs for the next 5 years...
