I feel bad even thinking of baseball at a time like this, but because of the absolutely horrible tragedy today, the Cubs now have an unexpected off day. What should happen to Guzman? The Cubs now will not need a 5th starter until May 12th. My hope is that the team will keep Guzman in Iowa until then so that more time can shake out the OF situation a little bit. What do you think-pitch him this week as planned, or wait until the 12th?

My prayers are with his family-it's always horrible when somebody is taken so suddenly.

The Indians finished 12 games off last year, but that was the largest number in the 6 years that were checked. It has to level off at least a little bit from the 4 in April that the Cubs currently have. That terrible team OBP by the way is still good enough to be in the top half of the NL.

That really isn't an option for the Cubs though-when they go to 11 pitchers, that means that if your bullpen is overworked, you have to send down Cotts and Wuertz and have them down there for at least 10 days. I'd rather have the 12th pitcher then that happen.

Well apparently Moss is going to the Pats for a 4th rounder. We could have matched that. Grrrrrr Here's the Moss link: http://www.nfl.com/nflnetwork/story/10156954 I don't think there was any real way for the Pack to take on Moss's contract without re-structuring it, and if he refused to do that for anybody but the Patriots, there isn't much that anyone else could do.

I wish the team would do that too, even if they don't stick with it. Tuesday is when the roster move will be made. Then they will play two games, then an off day-then 3 more, then another off day. I don't see any reason to need 12 pitchers that week. Finally they have 13 in a row, but Cherry will be eligible to be called back up by game 4 of that, and that will buy them another 10 days of figuring out what to do and possibly putting together a trade.

It probably has to be Pie right now. If they feel that they can stick with 1 reserve IF, then it will be Cedeno, but Piniella was very, very nervous about the prospect of only having 1 during ST. So my guess is that they send Pie down, and they start working on trading Jones so they can get Pie back up as soon as possible.

The Colts need to address a pick at LB, RB, special teams (probably a safety), and then the other two picks can go to pretty much every area for a little more depth.

I'm not sure you would want to do that. He was an amazing hitter off the bench last year, and it's obvious other teams fear him, considering that he's received 4 intentional walks to go with his 2 other walks. The 4 hitters who Ward was intentionally walked to get to-Soriano, Theriot (2 times), Barrett (Ward was pinch-hitting for Blanco, and so everyone knew that Barrett would pinch-hit for Izturis the next hitter, so I'm marking it as that). If teams are afraid to pitch to Ward, that can only help the Cubs.

I agree that assists can be a very misleading stat, and your answer is correct. Juan Pierre was the last to accomplish that last year.

Who was the last Cub to record 2 OF assists in one game?

I am usually a fan of his work, but not that one. He has errors all over the place. When I went down to the Colts pick, he picks a safety and then says that he can replace "starting safety Marlin Jackson so Jackson can move to corner". Jackson may have started several games last year because Sanders was hurt, but he is not a starting safety-Sanders and Bethea are. Not to mention, even if a safety is not drafted today or tomorrow, Jackson will be a starting corner next year.

I reviewed it a few times myself, and after a few tries at it finally managed to pause it at the correct moment. He was out, but only by the tiniest sliver of margins-his foot touched the edge of the bag a fraction of a second after the ball went into the glove. It was a close enough play that I couldn't have been upset at the umpire if it had gone the other way, but from the look I got when it was paused and in the slow motion replays that I did I think the umpire got it right.

I doubt Lou would end the experiment this early, at least not on a permanent basis. I can't say who will play tomorrow for sure, but I don't think the team has seen the last of Theriot at short, and my guess is that Theriot will be given a couple more days at SS at least. Kind of a funny sample size thing-if Theriot and Izturis do what they did today for the next 2 days (Theriot 0-4, Izturis 1-1) then they will have virtually identical offensive numbers for the season (2 points OBP and 2 points SLG would be all that separated them.) While I don't expect that to happen, it is still amazing to watch the numbers bounce around this much, and that scenario isn't altogether out of the realm of possibility.

It would have been just as close there-I looked at it a couple of times, and from the speed of the ball/length of throw, it would have been really close at first.

Edmonds is a lefty. I think the difference in ability between Wuertz and Cotts covers for the platoon disadvantage. What about the difference between Edmonds and Taguchi?

I don't think that was a failed hit and run (Theriot/Soriano). Theriot does not have to change his strategy whatsoever because Soriano was running on the 3-2 count-he has to swing on all the strikes and look at all the balls anyway. I dunno, Soriano had a pretty good jump and was about halfway to second when Theriot swung and popped it up. That kind of pitch is rarely swung at otherwise, considering it was high and inside. Theriot swung at the exact same pitch with a 3-2 count in the first inning, and he should have taken it both times for a walk-I don't really see how Soriano running the second time really changed that fact.

I don't see how that's that stupid-unless you're implying that the Redskins don't have anywhere near that depth. That is the goal of every team though to be exactly what Gibbs is talking about.

Marquis didn't have good stuff all day-he was doing a great job of avoiding the big mistake until that pitch. Oh well, for not having good stuff 3 runs in 6 2/3 is still good-let's hope the bullpen can hold this now.

Are you serious??? Dude, didn't I show you earlier that Cedeno was a much worse SS in the minors than Theriot was? I've seen Cedeno make that play a few times this year-that kind of ball is when he usually does his little spin move. Ok yah, I agree Cedeno has more range, but Theriot's defense isn't nearly the liability people are making it out to be. Maybe not, but that's 3 plays already tonight where a SS with more range makes plays. Theriot needs to improve upon that if he intends to stick there. Theriot's the best of the options. Cesar has been a complete flop offensively and defensively. Ronny might be a suitable backup, but he hasn't shown that he's a prime time player. I'm willing to give Theriot more than a few innings to stick at SS. Yeah exactly, me too. One of those plays he just looked nervous. When he might have been able to make a DP. He's just not used to playing SS, and on the grand stage to boot. Give him atleast a few more starts to see if he gets comfortable. GO RAMMY!! Oh, I'm willing to give him some time there, just like I was willing to see if Izturis could get the bat going at the beginning of the season. It's certainly possible that Theriot will greatly improve upon what he's done tonight, or it's also possible that the Cubs could just use a different SS when Marquis is on the mound (since most of the other pitchers are flyball pitchers, that would still have Theriot at SS 4/5 of the time, and Theriot's bat wouldn't be needed as much with Marquis in the lineup). That doesn't have to be determined until they let Theriot play a couple of weeks though.
