Ward on Tuesday and Ramirez on Friday-so at most the Cubs would have to have 1 game without Ward and 4 without Ramirez, but if Lee appeals both of them will likely be back before he has to start serving the suspension.

I don't think Wells said anything, but there was a quote from Peavy basically saying that he didn't appreciate Soriano showing them up and that he doesn't show up hitters when he strikes them out, or something to that effect. That was the quote from Wells. Peavy said that if somebody did that to him he'd hit the next batter in the ribs, hoping that he'd go back to his teammate the next time and tell him to run the bases next time.

I think he was throwing it away in disgust. Yeah, that's what I thought too-he knew he had a really good pitch to hit and just didn't get the right part of the bat on it.

Game isn't on WGN and it's blacked out on Extra Innings. Which, oddly enough, is good for my career today. It got me to come into work and just listen to the game online. Need to keep it rolling here...at some point the Cubs are going to need an 8-10 game win streak to get right back in the middle of things. Three down already. I think the Brewers come to Wrigley for a weekend series in two weeks. Would be nice to be in striking distance by then and really put the pressure on them. The game is on WGN in a little less than an hour. It's part of the 5 games in a row on WGN campaign, which btw the Cubs are 3-0 so far, which has to make the executives at WGN happy (they were promoting this for a couple of weeks, so more people probably tuned in than normal, and Cubs wins might keep them tuning in).

Augie's actually back in the major leagues. He was just called up by Arizona a day or two ago. And I believe hit a homerun! Yes, I was just coming here to post that-there was actually a fantasy note on Augie Ojeda in my league this morning saying that he homered and singled last night, and that when Hudson is healthy, Augie is supposed to be the first middle infielder off the bench.

My guess is that Murton has decided to take his whole 72 hours available to him to get to the minors-which should mean that he should be in there tomorrow night. dumb move on his part. His production has sucked and if he sulks about the move, then he'll been worse off. Heck, in 110 AB he has 1 hr and 8 rbi, Fonentot in 30 ab's has 2 hrs and 9 rbi. My guess, we won't see Matt before Sept callups. The three days may do him some good. It's pretty obvious that there were some issues between him and the coaching staff, and a couple days to clear his head and simply get away from the situation might help him report to Iowa ready to get his hitting corrected (and hopefully he'll be hitting right away) I don't think it will take more than a few weeks to come back up and probably again be in a 50/50 share of playing time with Floyd. -
Lucky for us, he's a right-hander :D He's still pretty tough though, and the Cubs only managed 1 run in 7 innings last time. Z will have to be on top of his game to keep up because the Cubs likely won't get all that many off of Young. In fact, Young has not allowed more than 3 runs in any outing since April 26th.

Wouldn't it make more sense to send our 13th pitcher down when Ramirez is ready? Pagan is useful as a late innings defensive replacement, something that none of the Cubs other reserve outfielders have going for them. Ramirez is going to be available after Ward. I think the 13th pitcher will go down when Ward comes back, and then Pagan will go down for Ramirez.

This probably still has Fontenot at 2nd base most of the time against left-handers and Pie in center-I think that will be enough.

That gives a clue that Pagan will be the one to go when Ramirez gets back. They'll end up using DeRosa as the 5th OF (against LH's) and then have a combination of Fontenot, Theriot, and Izturis in the IF. It definitely is our best lineup against left-handers.

Well, lets see. Do I want to go to a winning team, or the Titans? Seems pretty easy to me :D It just depends on what you want. TN is his home right now, plus the fact that he could probably become the #1 back for the Titans this year when Lendale White bombs out. Those are tough variables to balance with the pretty good chance to win a SB title with the Bears.

I heard the lineup earlier on the radio while jogging. I think it's: Soriano Pie Lee Floyd DeRosa Barrett Fontenot Theriot Lilly I know Barrett is 6th and Fontenot and Theriot follow him... Floyd hits pretty well off of LHP in his career. The article said that Pagan would start against some lefties (implying that Floyd would get the majority of the time) but I think Lou feels Cliff can handle Wells. This year Cliff is hitting .375 against lefties in 8 ABs. I really like that lineup. As someone said a few days ago, Fontenot is actually the only left-hander on the team who hits left-handers at least decently. Floyd is 2-6 with a HR against Wells in his career, so he's been pretty good against him. Izturis is only 2-11 against Wells in his career and has been absolutely awful against LHP this year (.485 OPS against LHP), so it's good to see him out of the lineup today.

Why wouldn't Fontenot be starting? He didn't start against the left-hander on Tuesday-my guess from that is that he won't start today, although he certainly could.

I love how Murton gets a -1 rating in CF even though he only played there one inning, and didn't have a misplay (there was a bloop that no CF could have caught and Pujols's homer that was long gone). Also, I watched the Daryle Ward at first base games, and there is no way that he was better than Derrek Lee has been at first this year. I don't trust most of the other rankings either, but I think those are the only two that are blatantly wrong.

That actually looks like a moderate, certainly not easy, schedule: Padres - Best pitching staff in the league, even if we miss Peavy, best record in the NL and has owned us in recent past. (My prediction: 1 of 3) Rangers - Just beat our division leaders 2 of 3, still have a decent offense, Sammy will be inspired, and our strength is pitching, which goes to die in Texas (2 of 3) White Sox - Like you said, throw the records out, I have a bad feeling about this series (1 of 3) Colorado - Certainly not an easy team like you seem to be suggesting but still (2 of 3) Nationals - OK they are pretty bad (2 of 3) Pirates - Certainly not pushovers, and have good pitching (1 of 3..just a gut feeling) Would not surprise me in the least bit. The funny thing is-if they do that (go .500 over the next 3 weeks) there's a decent possibility that the Cubs will only be 3 or 4 games out in the division at that point.

From the Cubs.com article... Barrett is playing today and Sunday Jones is getting time off to clear his head-no word on how long. Floyd will start against right-handers and Pagan against left-handers for now in right field. Could it be that Soto was already hurting a little bit when Hill came up? Raisin reported that the reason Soto is playing 1B is because he has an injury and he cannot catch. Looking back through the game logs, Soto was at 1B on June 2nd, at catcher on the 3rd and 4th, and then stopped playing at catcher. Hill was called up on the 1st-so it's somewhat probable that Soto had the injury even then. He tried to play through it on the 3rd and 4th, and then when it got worse because of him catching they decided to move him to 1B for a while. The Cubs might not have had much of a choice on which catcher to call up. Did it specify a date on that injury Raisin?

Pie might be given a break tomorrow. He has been rested against a lot of LHP. Is this a trend? I'd like to see him get some experience rather than Pagan playing center against LHP. Since he came back up, I'm pretty sure the Cubs have only faced two left-handers. Pie played against 1, and Pagan played against the other. I don't think it's quite known yet which one of the two will get more at-bats against left-handers in the coming weeks.

I think the second player to go will be Pagan. DeRosa and Theriot (and in a pinch Ward) can play OF if needed, and that makes the 5th OF not as necessary on this team. -
Wells did a pretty good job against the Cubs when they played in SD the last time. That will probably be true again, so Lilly better be on his game. Even though it's a left-hander, Floyd should get the start in RF, because 1)he's 2/6 with a home run against Wells, 2) He had 3 hits today, and 3) with Aramis out, having a lineup against a left-hander with Pagan in RF leaves the team with almost no power potential whatsoever. I hope that Fontenot/Theriot play up the middle tomorrow, as Izturis struggles with left-handers in general this season and is only 2/11 against Wells.

No-Dempster is the closer until he proves he cannot handle the role, and he hasn't come that close to doing that this year. Howry's run is very nice though. His last 8 outings: 9 2/3 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K Howry coming back and Marmol's emergence has really made this bullpen quite a bit better. With 4 good relievers at the back end (Dempster and Wuertz the other two), they can handle most of the close games, which should improve the Cubs record in close games.

Yup-two walks by DeRosa and Fontenot, K. Hill bunted them over, and Izturis hit a double to drive both runs in (8th inning).
