  1. Tulowitzki has been awful this year, granted he has big upside. Theriot and Tulowitzki have virtually been the same plyer, except Tulowitzki has hit a couple more dingers and Theriot has stolen more bases. Adding Tulowitzki would be a wash with the way he's playing right now, we might as well keep Theirot at SS and Fontenot at 2B. Plus if we trade Barrett we need a bat to supplement the loss of power from his position, and Hawpe fits the bill as well as the debacle in RF, and I'd miuch rather have Hawpe and his 139OPS+ over Tulowitzki's 84OPS+ I'd love to get Hawpe-but there's no way that Barrett and Jones even begins the conversation for him. The Rockies are not going to give up a player who's playing as well as he is if they are trying to make a run at a playoff spot this year.
  2. I enjoy all of your posts, and I probably screamed your name over 1000 times in January Bob. I also am a big supporter of your friend and college teammate Dallas Clark. What more can I do? :D
  3. Colorado was also interested in a left-handed bat off the bench. I wouldn't be upset at all if the Cubs traded Barrett and Jones together for somebody decent (I don't think they'd get a great return, but who knows what the Rockies would be willing to pay because who knows how desperate they are to get in the race). Blanco doesn't appear to be coming back anytime soon-so the Cubs would have Soto and Hill as their two catchers. That's not too big of a dropoff for the team for this year in exchange for a decent player and salary relief for next year.
  4. Michael Jordan did not punch Danny Ferry. he never punched any Piston, he never punched any Knick, he never punched anyone on the Heat. he never punched anyone. no matter how hard they hit him, no matter how many times they hammered him in mid-air, and trashed talked about it afterwords, he didn't punch them back, no matter how many times it was deserved. you know what he did? he had Stan Livingston and Will Purdue and Scott Williams take care of the dirty work for him. don't sit there and tell me that adult human males are incapable of showing restraint in that situation and that in so doing it was keeping the teams best interest in mind. I understand your point, but Jordan did punch someone-Reggie Miller :D In fact, while Jordan put him in a headlock and punched him multiple times, the referees continued to be afraid of Jordan by ejecting Reggie and allowing Jordan to stay in the game (1993). After a public outcry, the NBA suspended Jordan for 1 game, and didn't suspend Reggie (since he really wasn't fighting because Jordan had him in a headlock). I think that's the first and only time I've ever heard that happen-a fight in a game, only one person gets ejected, and the person who did not get ejected is the only one who is suspended.
  5. and thats why the ump totally blew it. if lee is a hot head he would have charged the mound immediately. they had an eternity to get between those guys. That's true-if the umpire escorts Lee down to first base, Lee probably never starts his conversation with Young and none of this happens either. Considering that there were tensions between the two teams before the game (with the comments by the Padres) the ump should have at least been talking to Lee and defusing the situation before it even started.
  6. The funny thing is that you posted this and probably didn't even realize that this is the game that your sig is coming from :D
  7. I agree. While what Soriano did was wrong, but it was so much less than several other people around the league. He looked at it for a second or two, trotted backwards for another couple seconds, and then started on a pretty quick jog around the bases. If the Padres are going to start throwing at people because of what Soriano did, they are going to have starting beanball wars every couple weeks. Since they aren't, I don't know why they were so upset in this case. The Cubs just lost a whole game from one of their very own starters after plunking a Braves player in what the umpire believed to be a retaliatory purpose pitch. This stuff goes on all the time. If Soriano runs the bases like a mature professional athlete, we aren't having this discussion today. Other teams throw at people for strange reasons sometimes. Remember, Soriano got thrown at just last week after running the bases like a mature professional athlete. If you look at the Soriano play and then compare him to many other HR trots around the league, the thought that the Padres would get that upset would seem to be pretty low. Again, I wish people would just put their heads down and run around the bases, but what Soriano did was tame, and for some reason the Padres chose this time to pick a fight.

  9. Lou already said that Barrett will start, so that's good. Floyd and Lee have both not been good in a lot of at-bats against Maddux, but hopefully Maddux not being what he was in Atlanta will help those two out. It's hard to tell which one of Theriot or Izturis will start-my leaning is towards Izturis, since Theriot has started the first 2 games of the series and Izturis is 4/12 against Maddux with a walk, but it really could be either one of them.
  10. Ankiel's numbers are interesting-.276/.314/.590. Seems he's a home run or strikeout guy now. Still though, if he keeps this up some major league team will find room for him on the bench. He can never be anything but a bench player because of that OBP, but legitimate power bats off the bench can be sometimes hard to find anymore.
  11. I hope that Lee's actions after the initial punches will help him out as well. He gets pushed away from Young, and then Lee starts just walking around for a few seconds before a bunch of teammates tackle him. You can tell Lee wasn't interested in fighting anybody but Young, and he wasn't trying all that hard to get back to him either after the initial swings. That should hopefully keep the suspension from being too large.
  12. again, i'd like to remind everyone that the cubs had to score a run to win the game, and against a really good bullpen with a terrible lineup, this was really unlikely to happen. I'd take the Padres' chances against our bullpen over our chances against theirs. Agreed, and for once I'm not really upset with the Cubs offense. It's disappointing that they didn't push across a run today, but they were facing a great pitcher for the first 4 innings and the best bullpen in the league after that. They were without their 2 best hitters, had their order messed up by the ejection, without their best hitter off the bench that otherwise would have come into the game, and also happened to be starting their backup catcher as well today. All those factors pushed together makes it a really, really tough day to score runs.
  13. Well, to be fair, two great starting pitchers started the day, and after Lee was kicked out the Cubs offense consists of 4 middle infielders playing the entire infield, the backup catcher, and two outfielders who cannot hit left-handers (and that's what they faced for a few innings). It doesn't lend itself to runs.
  14. Another great outing Z-nice to see you back. Theriot, Hill, and then ???-maybe Barrett? It's either Barrett, Jacque, or Pagan.
  15. seriously, what the hell is he arguing about? Otto says Black is arguing about DeRosa's foot possibly coming off the bag, and apparently it didn't. It was close. It's hard to tell, but it looks like his foot is still on the bag. It's on the side of the bag away from the Padres dugout though, so Bud would not have been able to see it from his vantage point.
  16. Lee will likely appeal, and Ward will be back to play 1B on Tuesday. Murton is not eligible to come back up until a week from tomorrow I believe.
  17. This is the only left-hander the Padres have in the bullpen, right? Because that middle of the order is ugly against left-handers right now. Pie is probably the worst, than Izturis, than Floyd-but none of them are good in that situation.
  18. no I noticed. He's walking people, and it sounds from Pat like he's letting his arm drop back down. I hope he manages to keep the Padres from scoring, because he's gotten a couple lucky bailouts already. Anyone got his pitch count? 77 pitches through 6.
  19. Piniella said yesterday that Aram is on target to come off when he's eligible to come off (Friday I believe). It's in a Cubs.com article yesterday.
  20. I don't mind that send with 1 out-the guy had to make a perfect, quick throw and it just happened that time that's exactly what he did. If he's a little bit slower to the plate, Theriot scores there.
  21. It's every weekend now with the Cubs :D Z and Barrett fighting Lou getting ejected Braves beanball war Lee-Young fight Usually that's enough to fill an entire year-the Cubs have managed to do it 3 weekends in a row. BTW, who do the Cubs play next weekend? The White Sox.
  22. Ward on Tuesday and Ramirez on Friday-so at most the Cubs would have to have 1 game without Ward and 4 without Ramirez, but if Lee appeals both of them will likely be back before he has to start serving the suspension.
  23. I don't think Wells said anything, but there was a quote from Peavy basically saying that he didn't appreciate Soriano showing them up and that he doesn't show up hitters when he strikes them out, or something to that effect. That was the quote from Wells. Peavy said that if somebody did that to him he'd hit the next batter in the ribs, hoping that he'd go back to his teammate the next time and tell him to run the bases next time.
  24. I think he was throwing it away in disgust. Yeah, that's what I thought too-he knew he had a really good pitch to hit and just didn't get the right part of the bat on it.
  25. Game isn't on WGN and it's blacked out on Extra Innings. Which, oddly enough, is good for my career today. It got me to come into work and just listen to the game online. Need to keep it rolling here...at some point the Cubs are going to need an 8-10 game win streak to get right back in the middle of things. Three down already. I think the Brewers come to Wrigley for a weekend series in two weeks. Would be nice to be in striking distance by then and really put the pressure on them. The game is on WGN in a little less than an hour. It's part of the 5 games in a row on WGN campaign, which btw the Cubs are 3-0 so far, which has to make the executives at WGN happy (they were promoting this for a couple of weeks, so more people probably tuned in than normal, and Cubs wins might keep them tuning in).
