  1. That's what I think is also key-anybody know of Bowen's contract status? The difference between Barrett and Bowen is not going to be that much this year. BTW, Sporting News claims Bowen has a strong arm. This is a comment from a poster responding to an article on MLB trade rumors: I would assume that Bowen is good defensively until I see something otherwise, but I'll try to find better sources on that.
  2. And now the last 9 outings for Howry: 10 2/3 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K I'd call that decent :D
  3. Yeah, that does seem to be the Cubs plan with Marmol. They've been saying that they want him eventually to be a great closer since the offseason. I really think so too-I have no problem with Dempster right now, but I like how they've put Marmol in some key spots these past couple weeks. I certainly hope they don't put him back as the long man when Gallagher goes back down (which I assume will happen eventually)
  4. eh, too wild...walks killed him...he's a two pitch pitcher and much more effective for an inning or two Agreed..plus his velocity is better as a reliever, which makes him quite a bit more effective. I think he's going to continue to be a really good reliever though.
  5. The only runs that Marmol has given up this year was when he had to go more than 2 innings in the Atlanta game that Lilly got thrown out in. Take those 2 1/3 innings out (where if you remember he looked very good the first 1 1/3 innings or so in that game and then just got tired) and he's thrown 13 1/3 scoreless innings on the season.
  6. Ok, if Lou looks at this Floyd, Fontenot, Pie, Izturis, and Ward will all be in the lineup for sure tonight: Robinson Tejada 2007 Against RHB- (137 AB's).248/.329/.380 Against LHB- (133 AB's).333/.408/.617  Those numbers follow what he did last year as well (interestingly enough, a much smaller difference in 2005 when he was really good). This is one day where the Cubs need to load the lineup with left-handers.
  7. This park favors LH hitters. I bet Ward, Floyd or Jones will DH with one of Jones or Floyd in RF. I would agree, and I really think it will probably be Ward. Soriano Pie Lee Floyd Barrett Ward DeRosa Fontenot Theriot (or Izturis-Theriot has started 3 straight at SS, so from prior usage patterns it seems like about time for another Izturis day)
  8. Everything I've heard still points to him being re-activated on Friday.
  9. Soriano, Lilly, Marquis and Dempster are the only "top" talent signed via free agency. Exactly. Should the Cubs system be faulted for trading for top talent using their farm rather than keeping them? I say that if you can develop a prospect so that they are traded for an impact player that should still be considered a success of the farm system. With that in mind, the Cubs as a direct result of their farm system have their two best hitters (Lee and Ramirez), their starting CF (Pie) and their starter at SS/2B (Theriot-he's getting enough at-bats to be a starter even without a set position), their top 2 starting pitchers (Z and Hill), their 5th starter (Marshall), and two setup men, a LOOGY, and a long man (Wuertz, Marmol, Ohman, Gallagher). That's a pretty decent collection of players that was put together through the work of the farm.
  10. You, like Jim Hendry, greatly overrate Izturis's defense. He would look great on this team but in defense of trading him it did take the kid awhile to figure it out... something he might not have done in Chicago. Exactly-just at the end of 2005 his prospect status seemed to be gone. He was 25, and had just put up a 746 OPS in Triple A. It wasn't until halfway through 2006 when he was traded to the Reds that he even started to figure it out again in Triple A. Plus, it's not like he was traded for somebody terrible-even looking back, I'd probably rather have Murton overall (Harris right now, but I think Murton has a better chance to have long-term production), and that's with knowing that Nomar would be hurt most of his time with the team, which we certainly didn't know at the time of the trade.
  11. I knew I never had a chance. I just happen to be a Colts fan, in a year that the Colts beat the Bears in the SB. I'm also a Pacers fan, who is in the Bulls division. I'm an ND football fan on a board with a lot of anti-ND people, and an IU basketball fan in the year that just happens to be the one in which hostility between IU and Illinois fans are at an all-time high. Not only that, but I sometimes express unpopular opinions on the baseball side as well. Finally, even with all that the creator of the tournament campaigns against me (with a very funny video btw, good work on that Derwood!) Basically, it was the perfect storm-I'm surprised I got as many votes as I did  It's better this way though-now I don't have to lose 80-1 to Raisin in the next round :D
  12. :?: Yeah, it's a small sample size, but that could be a valid concern. Is the Friday starter typically the staff ace on a college team? Yes, that starter typically is the ace. It is a small sample size, and I'm not too worried about it because the problems on Fridays are only caused by a low BA. His BB percentage, K percentage, and power (home runs and doubles) are just fine. He just didn't get enough singles to drop in against those great pitchers, and that shows in his .218 BABIP on Fridays.
  13. BTW, it was mostly a foregone conclusion anyway, but I might as well mention it just in case somebody was wondering. Lee is appealing, and Perry is not.
  14. On the broadcast today, they mentioned that 10 players on the team are from their own system. and the Cubs have 8 or 9 EDIT: 10 actually, assuming none of these guys came over in a trade that I don't remember: Gallagher Hill Marmol Marshall Ohman Wuertz Zambrano K Hill Theriot Pie K. Hill is not from the Cubs organization-not sure about the rest. Plus, Lee and Ramirez are fruits from the organization as well in a way.
  15. Here is the Neifi thread: viewtopic.php?t=34829 http://www.northsidebaseball.com/PremiumForum/viewtopic.php?t=34829 It actually is a lot shorter than I thought it would be-I guess it was hard to get a long thread when everybody agreed. :D
  16. I'd rather not the week before the All-Star Break-so many left-handed starters, especially on the Pirates. The Cubs absolutely need Lee against LHP right now, and they could possibly face 4 of them in the 5 games Lee misses during that time. Plus Lee's replacement Ward is a lot smaller dropoff to Lee when facing a right-hander than a left-hander. I'm hoping he doesn't have to serve it until after the All-Star Break.
  17. I suspected that Lee would get about that many. I'm shocked that Perry was suspended for 3 games and yet Peavy was not suspended, even though their actions during the brawl were nearly identical and Peavy had the comments before the game that helped cause it as well.
  18. That is special, thanks Derwood! He would only have time to make those in support of himself if he hadn't gotten iced in the first round. to be honest, that one was made before I got iced. But yeah, not more vids for me. you bastards So Derwood has been gunning for me since the competition started-I see how it is :D
  19. I'm glad to see that out of Murton especially-a homerun and a double today. I did notice though that both of those were in the first 2 innings against a pitcher who lasted only 1 2/3 and gave up 9 hits and 8 runs along with all 3 of those home runs, so it's safe to say that the pitcher was throwing up batting practice today (or maybe it's the wind, which is blowing 15 miles per hour straight out). Hopefully Murton can continue to have days like this when maybe the conditions aren't so favorable and get back up to the majors quickly, because the Cubs could really use his productive bat, especially against left-handers.
  20. I don't even think they brought him up because he was necessarily the best man for the job. They wanted to give him his "taste of the big leagues". If I'm right, he'll be back in the minors within 2 weeks, and for that reason alone, I hope I am right.
  21. Yeah, I understand this 3 weeks ago when the bullpen was in shambles, but with the emergence of Marmol and the resurgence of Howry to go with Dempster and Wuertz, I don't really see a big need for another late inning reliever.
  22. I didn't know when I joined that this scenario would end up happening though :). Here's my post at the end of the Superbowl-I don't think I rubbed it in, but it's up for the voters to decide:
  23. Between this outing and last outing, Scott Eyre now has 3 consecutive scoreless innings. His ERA is down to 6.55 on the season :D Seriously though, he's starting to get a little better. Hopefully that either means he starts to be a decent reliever again or he acquires enough value to possibly get traded.
  24. Yeah, I really don't understand that part. I don't know if the Padres could have telegraphed it any more obviously. Well, they could have hit Soriano on the first pitch of the game like the Braves did. Oh wait, that one was called unintentional as well.
  25. I'm not sure. It looks like he has one more year on his deal after this one, plus a club option for 2009, but I'm not sure what the money looks like for those years.
