  1. If the Rockies, Mets, and Phillies all win and San Diego loses we will have a tie for the division in the East and a 4 way tie for the wild card. So I would guess the Mets and Phillies would play for the divison with the Padres and Rocikes playing for a chance to play for the wild card with the winner playing the loser of the Mets-Phillies to win the wild card. Not exactly. First, the Mets-Phillies play on Monday for the NL East. Then, the loser of that would go into a 3 way playoff with the Padres and Rockies. The Rockies would get to choose if they want 1 road game or 2 home games. They probably decide to have 1 road game, so the Mets-Phillies loser would play the Padres on Tuesday. Then, the Rockies play the winner of that game on Wednesday. The playoffs would then begin on Thursday, with the Cubs either traveling to Arizona if one of the West teams win the wildcard or the NL East winner if the other East team wins the WC. Here's the simpler version of that: Monday: Mets/Phillies Tuesday: Monday loser vs Padres Wednesday: Tuesday winner vs Rockies Thursday: playoffs begin
  2. If Maryland holds on, I have to think this would be bad news for the Big East. Rutgers losing to a team WVU handled easily right after South Florida beat the Mountaineers doesn't do much for the prestige of a conference. Granted still a very long way to go in this one. I'll make the Cuse argument for a second. When teams in the SEC all give each other losses, it's because the conference is a gauntlet that nobody can go undefeated in. When the BE does it, it's because all the teams are bad in the conference. Everyone argued last year that WV, Louisville, and Rutgers were good because the rest of the conference was terrible. Now that the other part of the conference is better, how is that bad for the conference?
  3. Wow. I'd like to see that. I just found that game on my FSN channel.
  4. I'd definitely agree with that. Let them all play in 2008, figure out who you can keep in your lineup for 2009 and beyond and which positions you need to upgrade at. Unless I could get value out of him, I'd also keep Jones around and give him a decent amount of starts as the 4th OF.
  5. 90-70 isn't lucky. Best team in the NL, isn't lucky. People have said that for months, still wrong. Now, who is pitching for you guys Game 1, 2, 3? Assuming we meet up. 1: Webb vs -- 2: Davis vs -- 3: No idea vs. -- The DBacks have given up more runs than they've allowed. They're clearly a lucky ass team. Generally yes, but the DBacks are built to win close games. Probably the best 7-8-9 bullpen this side of the Padres (maybe better?). They have their holes (2-3-4-5 starters are not the best, but they mostly get the job done). Plus the backend of the DBacks rotation isn't even relevant in this discussion because I'm guessing it would be Webb, Davis, Livan, Webb, Davis. We beat Webb once this year, but hes still a tough matchup for our team. Davis is a lefty, and as you know you can throw stats away when we face lefties. Make no bones about it, the DBacks would be a very very tough matchup. They are definitely a tough matchup. Hopefully if the D-Backs go with the pitching rotation you mentioned the Cubs can get to Webb when he's pitching on 3 days rest in game 4. Davis is the type of guy who can really give the Cubs trouble, although the lineup that faced him in August won't be quite the same as would likely face him in the playoffs.
  6. Yup..ball right down the line past the 3rd baseman. It kicked around in the corner and the LF let it roll around for a while.
  7. Ronny has come on strong, if there's no ARod/Renteria/etc. here next year, I hope he gets a fair chance to win the job because he's a better talent and appears to be improving his strike zone discipline. I'm thinking about his chances of starting in the playoffs. I think its doubtful, but he's been roaring hot. I don't think there's any chance of that right now. Managers just don't like to change things up this close to the playoffs, even if it would probably be for good. I do echo Raisin's thoughts that if a SS isn't acquired that Cedeno should get a good shot at winning the job next year.
  8. I turned the channel and was watching the UConn game. What was the final score? 33-19. Notre Dame drove down the field a few times and got the lead to 26-19 with 7 minutes left in the game. Purdue added an insurance TD, and then Sharpley threw an INT in the red zone after ND had driven down there with about 3 1/2 minutes left that sealed the game. The total yards between the two teams was actually close for the first time all season. Purdue had 441 yards to ND's 431 yards. Purdue has a bad defense. They gave up 28 points in one half to Minnesota last week. Oh believe me, I know how bad their D is. In any normal year, that would be a bad performance. This year, the game was a lot better than the other 4 have been. ND showed they have some offensive players who are going to be good (Tate, Kamara, Clausen before he left with an injury was good). With how bad they have played so far this season, I think most fans are just looking for any signs of life, and they showed that today. I'm glad Indiana decided to go back to James Hardy today. They have to feed him the ball because he's easily their biggest playmaker.

  10. I notice the ND updates suddenly stopped when they started coming back in the second half :D Good win for Purdue. ND gets better and better every game, but they are still very likely to start 0-8. They still make way too many mistakes to beat any quality team. Getting within a TD of Purdue after starting down 23-0 is nice, missing extra points left and right is not. As for the Golden Tate thing that you were asking about earlier dew, you should watch the highlights of this game. He is an amazing deep threat and made 3 absolutely great catches today for huge gains.
  11. I honestly haven't noticed him that much (except for a few below average kick returns). That jump ball catch by him today was nice though, and it shows how much confidence they have in him to throw up a deep ball like that. I definitely think he could develop into a good player in a year or two.
  12. I've got the whole 2 odd some hours on WGN radio recorded at the celebration. It has Lou tearing up, and tons of great stuff. I can post some snippets later if anyone wants it. It's gonna take a long time to clean it up real good. By the way, are the Cubs going to skip any of the main 5 pitchers? I would assume they will give Ramirez some rest. Can you imagine any of the "main" guys playing today and tommorow? YES PLEASE! x2 I'd assume our lineup will look something like this Theriot ss Pie CF Ward 1b Murton LF Fuld RF Fontenot 2b Cedeno 3b Blanco C Actually...that's just what I'd do. I assume lou will give some of the big guys a rest today, and some a rest tomorrow; but i doubt anyone plays the full game. I doubt Ward will play because of his injury the other night.
  13. Hey, just letting everyone know there is a Cubs special listed on my guide that is supposed to air right after the game today. It's listed as a recap of the 2005 season, but I'm pretty sure that's just a misprint :D
  14. Who gets game 3? Hopefully a spot start to Gallagher or Marshall. Sunday's game? My guess would be Gallagher, but it could be him, Marshall, or possibly Hart (although if Hart is going on the playoff roster, I don't want him starting Sunday). I'd agree that Hill has to start tomorrow...it's just too long of a wait otherwise until game 3 or game 4 of the playoffs.
  15. why? Z has been money on the road Aren't games 1 and 2 both on the road? Yup, I want Z in game 1 just in case hes too pumped up. Lilly has been fantastic all year following a loss Isn't the fact that Z will be too pumped up an argument for starting him in game 2, which would be on normal rest if it's on Wednesday as it most likely be? If we don't have to, then why on earth would we start Z on short rest? Game 1 is on Wednesday. Z would be starting on normal rest.
  16. That's only 19, not 20 locks on your list above. My guess is that Soto and Pie are also locks at this point. The decisions that will be hardest will be Hart or Ohman and Cedeno or Fontenot. I think both Murton and Monroe will very likely make the roster together. That gives Lou the flexibility to pinch-hit for his OF's and put in defensive replacements which he likes to do a lot. It is also necessary considering 3 of his OF's cannot hit left-handers (Pie, Jones, Floyd), 1 of his OF's cannot hit right-handers (Monroe) and half of his OF's cannot play defense. A second middle infielder would have a tough time getting off the bench. If I had to guess right now, I'd guess Lou will take Soto, Pie, Murton, Monroe, Fontenot, and Hart. It will leave the Cubs with no backup SS and no 2nd left-hander, but the Cubs did that for quite a while earlier in the season.
  17. That's probably the case. The only people that really got attention last year were the ones who made it exciting (people like Z). Howry isn't like that, he's just really steady, and you tend to appreciate those people more when the games matter more.
  18. Yeah. Since Howry didn't pitch yesterday, I'm sure he's been declared available to go Friday, Saturday, and Sunday if he needed to be used. I'm glad to see Marmol get some rest. This is his 2nd straight day off, and hopefully he won't have to pitch more than once the rest of the year before hopefully the playoffs.
  19. That's the plan, apparently. Sounds like the right move, since he won't go till game 3 or 4* anyways. What about Lilly on Sunday? *If the Cubs make the playoffs. I'm pretty sure Lilly would not start on Sunday if the Cubs clinch. They want him for game 2 on Thursday and a Sunday start makes that difficult.
  20. That's joe Nuxhall. Been a Reds' announcer for about 40 years after finishing his playing career with the Reds. Around Cincinnati, he's as well known as any of 'em. yeah, i know full well who he is. i was being facetious. if you would have read my previous poists, my point is more about the absurdity of this Reds guy in the crowd/ Reds broadcast. as for Nux being the most famous Red? i still think not. shall i display stats? ;) Yes. I would most definitely like to see your stats on who is the most well known. That should be most informative. http://web.baseballhalloffame.org/index.jsp see: Bench, Morgan, Rose, etc. oh yeah... So? Billy Williams is in the Hall of Fame and Ron Santo is not. Which one is more beloved and more known by Cubs fans? Santo, because of his announcing career. The same is the case for Nuxhall. BTW, I believe Nuxhall will hold the record for the youngest player ever to play in a major league game for a long time. He was 15 when he got into a game in 1945.
  21. I somehow don't see him getting a triple...this year. Do you mean another triple? He has 5 of them already this year.
  22. I'd treat it like a normal start. Don't overthrow him, but there really isn't that much need to be overly conservative either.
  23. Wait... what? Why would the playoff schedule change? If there are two days between the end of the season and the start of the playoffs, that would be fine. Not likely, but you could end up with a 4-way tie 89-73. Mets Phillies, Rockies, Padres. That still would only require 2 days though. The games for the division titles would be on Monday, and the losers would play for the WC on Tuesday. I think the playoff delaying tiebreakers all had to have 3 teams in the West in it, be it a 4 or 5 team scenario. Now that Colorado and Arizona cannot tie, those are out the window.
  24. On that single to right, the Reds color announcer was talking about how Floyd was unwilling to leave his feet or dive for the ball and how that ball was easily catchable. I'm not sure why Floyd would dive for a ball that he would have ended up 10 feet short if he had, but whatever I guess.
  25. That's 7 straight times Floyd has been on base. 2 hits, 4 walks, and a HBP.
