  1. That's because he's known as Logan Watkins (just found that out). I'm tracking down some info right now. He's committed to Wichita State. He's also apparently a 2 sport athlete (also a star quarterback).
  2. Jeffrey Beliveau, left-handed pitcher. They can't hit him (.182 opponent batting average last year), he strikes out a lot (78 in 76 2/3 innings) and he walks the world (77 in those same innings).
  3. Looks like it will either be Hoffpauir or Murton. My guess is it will be Hoffpauir, since Toronto has 5 right-handers in their starting rotation. From Cubs.com:
  4. Here's a full report on Randy Jackson from the Furman web site: And a quote from John Manuel:
  5. The Brewers picked him in the sandwich round.
  6. When Fred spot-started for Aramis Fan it was win or lose, Aramis Fan was back in for the next game. That was my understanding of this particular spot start. You'll start tomorrow's game A New Era no matter what happens tonight. I'll just try to pick up a quick win in between your long win streak :D
  7. The second of 3 pitching re-matches occurs Friday night. Rookie Sean Gallagher for the Cubs, who has showed some real signs of forcing his way into the rotation, goes up against Hiroki Kuroda. The Japanese media will probably once again be watching intently to see the Kuroda-Fukudome matchup. The Cubs won this matchup last time these starters faced off, so let's hope for another win and a clinch of a winning road trip. Gallagher in his start against the Dodgers: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K And Kuroda against the Cubs: 6 1/3 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
  8. Normally the hitting has been a bit more balanced, but not really tonight. Half the lineup picked up 9 of the 11 hits, 2 of the 4 walks, both home runs, and one of the 2 doubles. So thank you Fukudome, DeRosa, Theriot, and Edmonds. The first 3 especially were absolutely huge tonight. And thank you Lou for using your bullpen pretty well tonight. The Cubs could really use some blowouts though to not really overexert the short relievers. Marmol's the worst of them, but Wood and Howry are catching up to him. Hopefully the more frequent off days coming up can help relieve some of that pressure on the short relievers, and then maybe the Cubs will get to a point in the season where their workload won't have to be as much.
  9. Wow. It just all changes with 1 misplaced pitch. Howry's 11 inning scoreless streak, his 14 batters in a row that he had retired over the past week, and the Cubs lead all gone. Hopefully the offense can pick him up.
  10. Hopefully the Cubs can start a rally here, Marmol is lifted for a pinch-hitter, and then Howry and Wood shut them down in the 8th and 9th.
  11. Part of the problem is Dempster has nothing tonight and yet we have let him piss away this lead. Should of pulled him after 5. He was cruising for 4 innings, had a little bit of a rough inning in the 5th, but still came out of it ok and had only 67 pitches through 5. If we pull people as soon as they have 1 bad inning, we'll never get enough innings for our starting rotation. Many pitchers settle down after getting hit hard in 1 inning, especially if they were cruising before that. Dempster happened not to tonight.
  12. Dempster only threw 93 pitches last time out, and this performance tonight is basically the same outing he's had a few other times this year. He struggled in 2 innings...that's Ryan Dempster for you. He's going to have innings where he loses his control. He's been doing it his whole career, and he's been doing it this year.
  13. Kyle Reynolds singles in the winning run for Tennessee as they win 9-8 in 11. Colvin finished 1-3 with 2 walks, a sac fly, and a strikeout.
  14. I know Dempster is going to get the green light on a steal attempt soon, but I certainly hope it's not while he's standing on 2nd base. He'd be thrown out by 20 feet at 3rd.
  15. Some of both. He's probably an .800-.850 OPS type of player who will feast on fastballs and hanging breaking balls and also walk a good amount. On the other side, breaking balls will hurt him, and he'll strike out a good amount of the time. I think we got spoiled by the Soto we saw in September and April, but Soto will still end up being a quality major league ballplayer. I don't think anyone expected him even a month ago to remain the best hitter on the team all year long.
  16. Brandon Guyer takes 2 deep tonight, including the game-winner in the 9th. Peoria wins 6-5. And Tennessee had an 8-2 lead with 2 outs in the 9th, and now it's 8-8.
  17. What?! Did Lou even look at the match-ups? Reed Johnson is terrible against right-handers, and Billingsly is a very good right-hander. 8 at-bats is not usually enough to bench a player, especially when your other option is pretty terrible.
  18. Tony Thomas is already 2/3 with a home run, a triple, and a walk as Daytona leads 13-1 in the 5th. Peoria is tied at 1 in the 3rd. Marquez Smith with another home run. Tennessee is up 4-2 in the 4th. Veal: 4 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K Colvin has a sacrifice fly and a walk so far.
  19. I'm glad to see that he must have some pop in his bat. He has to in order to have a slugging average that is double his batting average, especially since he reportedly has barely average speed.
  20. So Ryan Theriot 2.0 No, Theriot wasn't a top 70 draft prospect. So a rich man's Ryan Theriot? Small, athletic, bad SS He's not small (6 foot 3, 210 pounds). To compare, that's 2 inches taller and 5 pounds heavier than DeRosa. He's got a good arm, unlike Theriot, and he has more power than Theriot does now, plus a little bit of added power potential in the future. There are much better comps for Flaherty than Ryan Theriot.
  21. I definitely agree with the DeRosa (as he is now) comp over Theriot. Here's a video of him (warning: some of the shots are either some bad camera angles or some plays that really aren't that impressive, but overall it's a pretty good look at him). http://video.aol.com/video-detail/ryan-flaherty-highlight-reel-vanderbilt-baseball/299056095
