  1. I think some players are less susceptible to the Cub talent-destroying machine than others. Wieters, of course he'd be doing fine in the Cubs system, the Cubs are a lot better at destroying the kind of raw, undisciplined young high school talent than a professional, elite college hitter like Wieters. Heyward, I'm not going to pine too hard for. There's a good chance he'd be crap in this system. Otherwise, why should anyone think the Cubs should've drafted Travis Snider? Travis Snider was a complete hitter, almost a collegiately polished hitter, whereas with Vitters all you read about is his rawness and talent. Don't draft any raw college hitters with boatloads of sexy talent that high, this organization can't do crap with it. Same goes with anybody who draws a Vladimir Guerrero or Nomar Garciaparra type comparison, because it always turns out they don't make the same kind of consistent hard contact those guys (in their heyday for Garciaparra) made by swinging at nearly everything. So the Cubs should draft position players, yeah, but high school position players are the diciest, and ones like Vitters dicier than some. And who gives a crap if Vitters was some further down round pick, you don't see me complaining about Dylan Johnston, the frustration comes from the wasting of such a high pick.
  2. I don't know that I agree Gavin Floyd is "a very good young starter." We'll see where he is at the year's end.
  3. That sarcastic rejoinder is pretty easily turned around. "Hey guys, let's go easy on Vitters, he just needs more time. I mean, it's not like this organization has been specifically noted for destroying every promising young hitter they get their hands on or anything, or that he has a lot of the attributes as other busts, or that his senior season disappointment was rather just glossed over, or that the Cubs have established a definite trend in this sort of department that you'd have to be on company payroll to pretend doesn't exist or anything. Let's just give him some time and you'll see I'm right like all those other home grown stud draft picks who just needed time and turned out fine."
  4. Maybe in Tampa had a history of destroying stud college pitchers than I'd say that's an apt comparison. But it's not. And it's silly to pretend like that's the case. Heck, even in one of the Baseball America mailbags John Manuel said Vitters prognosis for success was diminished because he was taken by the Cubs. But I'm sure it'll all work out because we're the Cubs, and let's not jump the gun because it's not like this doesn't look like the beginning of a scenario we've seen played out a ton or anything. Your arguments don't work because every time people on here have said about a prospect "give him some time" it's been the kiss of death. "Oh Colvin just needs to readjust to wood, give him time." Yeah, that must be it.
  5. Every time people cite children as a reason why something has to be discontinued I want to tell people if they're that concerned to raise their damn kids in a plastic bubble and leave the rest of the world alone. Also, too many people in here come off like PC zombies.
  6. It is not insane considering he's a Cub and considering the track record. 100% of the time in these cases when someone has posted the traditional "call for patience" that you just did, they've been wrong every single time. The early panicking on all of these guys, has been justified. Now I've seen it all. And these guys do not get the benefit of the doubt with me, they have to prove themselves to me. Because I've seen this little lecture delivered about Pawelek, I remember all the blah blah blah about "Oh, wait until Brownlie gets his velocity back" or the "Let's not throw Luke Hagerty under the bus yet" or "Grant Johnson looks like crap now but he needs more time to recuperate" or "The Cubs knew Harvey was raw when they took him, he needs time." Well the hell with that. Everything about Vitters smells. I didn't like that his drafting report read like Rockies bust Chris Nelson. That he was another one of these stamp-of-death Vlad Guerrero comparisons, he's been a Cub how long and he's been sidelined by every little thing and when he is on the field he can't hit or field worth a damn. He doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt. Neither does this organization. I think it's more insane to blindly hand out the benefit of the doubt in this case.
  7. What do you mean? I had to guess. It could have been Wieters, Porcello, Jason Heyward, Nick Noonan, Jarrod Parker, Tim Alderson, or any number of the one billion draft picks accomplishing more than Vitters.
  8. Next up to be cut at this rate: Frank Catalanotto, Ryan Spilborghs, and Jason Repko. "At this rate" just means the fringey outfielders I've seen people pine after before.
  9. I hate Vina and his fake ass analysis. I like Phillips. He has some ganas, while everyone else kisses a player's ass who doesn't deserve it, he'll call guys out more than most.
  10. Does anyone care to speculate on the odds that the Cubs in the upcoming draft 1. Take somebody from Virginia in rounds 4-8 (highest probability 5 or 6) 2. After the first two rounds, make our first high school pitcher selection a kid from Florida in rounds 11-12? Why do we do this every year?
  11. That guy can kiss the fattest part of my ass. You think Chris Berman and Joe Morgan are annoying guys to listen to? Try listening to this clown say "Say hello to my little friend" 5 times a show. Just put Karl Ravech on BBTN full time.
  12. Oh gee, let me figure out who I'll trust on this issue.
  13. Lou's being stupid. What does he expect? Everybody to be Joba Chamberlain? Look at where we are in the season. At the end of the season, is Seattle's pen going to have a 5.43 ERA and Tampa's a 2.26 ERA? Florida's a 2.81? We just jerk players around too much here. Look at the numbers for Pat Neshek, Francisco Rodriguez, Huston Street, Matt Guerrier, Cla Meredith, George Sherrill, Tony Pena (a good reliever from AZ), Aaron Heilman, Jason Isringhausen, Joaquin Benoit, Manny Corpas, Damaso Marte, Jeremy Accardo, and J. J. Putz, saints preserve us, the Relief Pitching All Star Team is in the crapper, good thing we don't have them or they'd all be sent down.
  14. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a scout or anything, but watching them I always thought they were somewhat similar. Why is Saunders recognized as a legitimate major league starting pitcher and Marshall is just this guy bumming around?
  15. It's time for the fairy tale to end! I have grown weary of this charade!
  16. Probably more like Oscar Bernard #2 or Tim Lahey #2.
  17. Another error for Wellington Castillo? Geez. Tony Thomas hasn't been hitting for a while either.
  18. I'm not disappointed in Darwin Barney because we all knew he was a bad, throwaway pick from Day 1. I count injuries against prospects too. Vitters seems to have a lot of nagging things wrong with him already.
  19. Nice outing by Gallagher, but this sucks. It's like practically everyone is doing badly. W. Castillo's defense doesn't seem that great this season either and I had hoped for a little more with the bat. Tony Thomas has a blah OPS and isn't owning the basepaths like he did last season, and his defense is blah. Burke has been disappointing. Vitters, blah, he is getting shown up by high schoolers drafted way after him, like Nick Noonan. Mitch Canham is doing better than Donaldson a level ahead of him. It's like everyone is out to prove they are not worth paying attention to.
  20. Yes, yes, we all know that would never happen, I'm just interested if people on here would do it.
  21. When did Brian Bocock become a top prospect, as someone above mentioned? He's got some really ugly minor league numbers.
  22. Let's forget about the circumstances of the major league club for a moment. Has there ever been a less deserving April call-up? I wonder if this is what the Giants think a good youth movement is: fast-tracking a C prospect who spent less time in the minors than many elite bonus babies. This is a cute youth movement. Brian Bocock and Emmanuel Burriss, your INFIELD OF THE FUTURE. If that doesn't put asses in seats I don't know what will.
  23. Justin Berg vs. Chris Volstad? Oh well, I guess the infielders can just take the day off then.
  24. Come on. How likely is that to happen. Jose Guillen and his bad defense, career .774 OPS makes $12 million a year! How much will Orlando Hudson make a year? Even if he's downright awful, even if he's David Bell, what does that mean for the Rays? They overpay him by $2 million for like one year? Big deal.
