  1. A little more telling is the strikeout to walk ratio month by month.
  2. Since May 4th, Fukudome has hit .248 with a .712 OPS. That's crap for a $12 million corner outfielder. Maybe a $1.75 million shortstop that'd be fine.
  3. The 1st month pitchers had no idea how to work him. Now that they have discovered where the holes are in his swing, they are exposing them. He has looked EVERY BIT as bad as Jacque used to when he whiffed. He's spinning around and missing the ball by about a foot. Not only that, his lack of any kind of gap/doubles power is past the point of alarming. He just doesn't drive the ball. If he gets a hit lately, it's a seeing eye single or a slap hit to left. I am not giving up on the guy but I think it's safe to say the honeymoon is over and if the spiral continues, do not be surprised to start hearing a few boo birds at Wrigley. Ugh. I hate that business where he spins around when he swings and misses and ends up in a crouch. It just looks so incompetent.
  4. Fukudome has been getting worse every single month. It's not a popular opinion, but I don't have a bit of faith in the guy anymore. To me, I've already stuck him in the category of "mediocre .740 OPS type Japanese hitters" with Iwamura, Iguchi, and Johjima. The walks are drying up because pitchers are less likely to walk a guy who doesn't hit for average or power. I'm not saying he doesn't have another hot streak in him, but I'm not buying the optimist's line. He's not a particularly good offensive contributor. I think when all is said and done he's a .275 BA, .360 OBP, .390 SLG hitter. Which means he's a downgrade from last year's right field position. But, uh. He's a good defender and All-Star or something.

    New Mods

I am stunned I was not chosen. Just because I was going to make C*lvin and H*seby banned words does not I should not have been chosen. Just because I was going to misuse my powers to silence my enemies and advance my own crackpot theories does not mean I should be disqualified. Sure if you want someone conventionally competent you made a good choice. But I was going to take the concept of what a "moderator" really is and turn it completely on its head! I was going to redefine the role and re-invent the semiotics we associate with the position of moderator. In the history of moderators, there would be two eras: Pre Badnews and Post Badnews. Like the Cambodians of 1979 we were heading for Year Zero people. Oh well, maybe next time.
  6. That's a sad story. RIP
  7. The Phillies win in spite of being stupid. I remember when they gave up like the 17th overall pick for Jon Lieber. Then they couldn't get anything better for Abreu and Lidle than the guy the Yankees drafted with that pick. Than the Freddy Garcia fiasco. Now this. Blanton is simply not that good. He's not even an innings eater away from Oakland. Dumb.
  8. I am calling it: Dempster and Wood will both be Type B free agents and the draft pick thing will not be a great compensation.
  9. My favorite's is Pat Neshek because there's a whole lot of funny business going on in that delivery. My least favorite is Scott Elarton or Craig Hansen because both of them are kind of boring and straightforward. Does Elarton even have a difference between the wind-up and the stretch? Haven't seen him in a while. Also Keith Foulke. I also don't like LaTroy's new delivery. Honorable mentions for favorite: Chris Ray, former Cub Clay Rapada (it's like Brian Shouse + Mike Myers x 1000 = Clay Rapada), Tim Lincecum because it makes him look cool, Jake Peavy because even when I watch it in slow motion there's a part of it I can't quite see, and K-Rod's delivery is a lot of fun.
  10. Tough crowd! Is a 3.41 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a strikeout per inning really "mediocre?"
  11. I think Jeff Natale is a better fit there than Youk.
  12. Your Honor, I do object. People say that if you expect Fukudome to do better than say, Brian Giles 2006-2007 (not even that - Brian Giles has his home park as an excuse and makes way better contact) than your expectations were unreasonable. But Your Honor, I would stipulate that it was this very forum that was instrumental in building expectations. Because now we seem to pretending that all of those "Dude, PECOTA/Bill James projects Fukudome for an .870-.900 OPS!!!!11!!! Awesome!!!!" topics didn't exist? I hope he doesn't end up with Greg Zaun's or Brad Wilkerson's 2005 rate numbers and people say "It's okay because his OBP is 100 points above his average." I'm probably more worried than I would be because every time I see him hit he's having a really ugly AB.
  13. Who if he WHAT? DON'T LEAVE ME HANGIN' LIKE THAT!
  14. Since May 4th, Fukudome has hit .245 with a .356 OBP, slugged .365, for a whopping .722 OPS. That is what he has done since May 4th. That is a long time. That's not "oh, he's hit a rough 10 day patch." I don't understand the reasoning behind some of the knee-jerk defenses in this topic. A .722 OPS for a corner outfielder since May 4th is not good enough. Since June 4 he's hit .238 with a .340 OBP, slugged .369, for a .709 OPS, with 32 strikeouts in 122 ABs. Isn't there reasonable cause for concern here?
  15. Won't Hamilton be something like 32 when he first hits free agency? I don't know, I don't have the numbers in front of me. But I'll be interested to see what happens with Ryan Howard. He's got a lot of upsides, a ton of downsides, and he'll be sort of old when he hits free agency.
  16. I'm not sure why everyone is certain Fukudome will be okay, I'm not. Now his OPS is below .800 and he's been like a .730 OPS guy since May. Before I said he was heading for Scott Hatteberg 2004 territory but now it could be even worse. I am worried.
  17. You're really going to have me look up that thread in Transactions? Come on. The point is major league baseball players with minor league careers like Fuld have contributed to their teams so there's no reason that Fuld should've been met with 100% scorn.
  18. It's the fact that you can't just disagree with people who don't share your opinion. You have to crush them, take potshots at their username, and make them out to be bad people. There's no need for the judgement on people who disagree with you. Essentially it comes down to he's getting his ass kissed because he plays in Texas. That's the variable. If we keep everything the same but he plays in San Diego, there's no Triple Crown madness, there's none of this. So Josh Hamilton is Horatio Alger because he plays in Texas. Sorry, that's nonsense to me. I've been more on board with Kinsler who has better splits, but Hamilton? It's not just talk about the guy himself, now everyone says he's "an incredible ballplayer." He'd be "an incredible ballplayer" if he didn't have like a .300 point OPS split from home to road maybe. Nobody celebrates that Jonny Gomes was homeless as a kid and had a heart attack at the age of 20 or something. In the grand scheme of things, no, Hamilton did not hit "rock bottom." Pointing out this is media froth shouldn't get personal attacks in return. Go back and read my original post. We're talking about how the media has made him into a better baseball player than he is because of this.
  19. That's a weak excuse to me. That's like saying Saltalamacchia is projectable while Soto going into his third year of AAA is a finished product. It's not like we're comparing Ryan Shealy's career path with Elvis Andrus's or something. McLouth wasn't particularly young for any of his levels. Before the season started people wanted to trade for Reggie Willits, who was basically as old as Fuld at his levels, had worse numbers, and played in better hitting parks. Now Willits doesn't look so hot but there's a topic full of people drooling over him before the 2008 season started.
  20. Hey, that's great. Everyone who disagrees with you is a "prick." Wonderful. I'm glad we had this discussion. Here's a reason to me why this media love-in looks bogus. If Josh Hamilton plays in San Diego, there is no story. He's got no one to drive in and no park to inflate his numbers. But since he plays in Texas he's like John Henry and Paul Bunyan put together. Your reaction really baffles me. This is why people are so frightened to question the media's sacred cows these days, because of all of this puffed up outrage people get hit with.
  21. I am outraged with what I saw. What a heinous tragedy.
  22. and the "What a great story" love-in with Josh Hamilton? Dude has a 1.104 OPS at home and a .769 OPS away from Arlington and this is history's greatest player that never played for the Yankees or Red Sox according to the media. I also like the idea that anyone is buying Milton Bradley as a legitimate 1.034 OPS hitter.
  23. I dislike the attitude of these know-it-alls who bash people who showed any hope for Fuld. They say things like "Look at Fuld's minor league OMG who could care about Fuld ROTFHLFDMSFMFFAJAO." Guess what smart guys? Prior to this year, Fuld had basically the same minor league career as NATE "ALL STAR" MCLOUTH. OMG LOL Nate McLouth suxx0rs I never said Fuld was great or would be great, I said maybe he deserved more than outright scorn. But even such a mild proposal as that was met with ridicule.
