Even if Carpenter isn't getting hit hard, small ball would have been a waste. I understand the philosophy, but... we scored a run. How is that a waste?? It took away a chance of scoring more than one. If you can do that every inning, that would be great. But you don't have the heart of the order coming up all that often with a guy on base and nobody out. Walker swinging at a bad pitch on the first pitch just to move the runner over also changed Lee's approach. I want him swinging for power and not focusing on just making contact.
