  1. I rather suspect that given more time to mature and develop he'll do that. In fact, and I know you'll agree, he *should* have been given the time *this* season to do so, rather than be yo-yoed back and forth. Yeah. Of course, with the way things worked out, Hill might have been fortunate that his curve ball was so bad in his first game or two back. He probably gained some confidence in his fastball.
  2. Or it means he's having a flukish hot streak, much like Neifi had at the start of the 2005 season. Problem is that Neifi didn't have a career .300 avg and .350 OBP. Funny how everyone just assumes that Pierre is going to suck for the rest of his time in baseball. There is no reason Pierre can't return to his career avg. in OBP or BA. In Pierre's defense, he had a horrible start as a Cub. This is going to be Pierre's 3rd horrible season in the past 5.
  3. Pierre is still having a horrible year, just like he had last year. It's no fluke. He can get all the singles he wants, but his OBP is still terrible.
  4. From a rather long article about Troy Smith and Ohio State:
  5. If you give Hendry an extra $20 million (roughly what the Yankees payroll was the last time they won the World Series), you'll get more bad contracts. Heck, if you give most GMs more money than they really need, much of that money is just going to be spent on overpaying players or giving them too many years. If you give a good GM $95 million, you'll likely get a pretty good team year after year. Money is not an issue with this team. "Buying" a championship is not only a poor strategy (that is, to try to go for it all in one season), but it's also not really a possibility for this team. They consistently have a high payroll that gives Hendry the opportunity to fill any holes that he has. It just so happens that he's taken that money and created the MLB equivalent of the Big Dig.
  6. Does it look like Pierre will be a Class A free agent? I know they use "traditional" stats like BA and PAs and that will keep him at least in the top 50%, but boy has he sucked the past two seasons.
  7. It looks like his strikeouts are up, which is good to see. Hill still needs to learn how to best utilize his curve ball at the major league level, though.
  8. I was there :) After the game a friend of mine who was participating in a charity event at halftime, got his head shaved by Nate Jacqua. He's actually a pretty cool guy in person. I thanked him for helping to beat Chelski :) Cool. I was wondering why Jacqua wasn't out there, but it looks like Sarachan just wanted to give him the day off. Sadly, I doubt I'll be able to make it down to Bridgeview this year. Looked like a decent crowd, though. I agree with the color commentator who said that Robinson was the most surpsised guy out there when his header went in. Nice corner by Armas. And yeah, the buildup was good. Perfect feed to Carr. It's a shame that Gutierrez hesitated on the penalty kick. The GK guess correctly at first, but if he had kept his stride and just kicked it, it would have gone in. Both teams had a ton of near misses last night, making it a pretty good game. A high scoring night for the MLS, though. The Red Bulls won 6-0 over RSL and the Galaxy upset DC United at RFK 5-2.
  9. Despite missing quite a few chances (including an 89th minute PK), the Fire beat Colorado 1-0 to remain in second.
  10. Veal's final line: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 9 K, 1-5 GO-FO, 1 HR Daytona is tied in the 6th. Pie doubles (also walked earlier) and scores on an error to tie the game at 1-1.
  11. Huh. That was their idea? What happened to it? That would have been great...and I would have been there. Des Moines to Chicago wouldn't be that bad. I forgot about the problem of not being able to play a night game (although I wonder if they could cut a deal with the neighborhood since the attendance wouldn't be that great), but if they tried to work it out with the people that come up with the minor league schedule, I'm sure it could be done.
  12. Fenway is hosting a double header of IL and NYPL games today. I would think the Cubs could hold off on the tours for one day and field some teams that people could actually care about.
  13. They probably stand out more for what they did with their talent after they won the Series. I took the question to mean not necessarily having the highest payroll (tough to do) but just throw out the big bucks to the big name FAs and bump payroll significantly (a la 19 to 5). The payroll they returned to was nearly 25% lower than what it was in '96. But the Cubs' payroll is in a far better position than that of the '96 Marlins. The Cubs were 4th in player expenses last year, so the Cubs are/were basically at that point. They're just wasting the money that they're spending. If they felt they were really close and the Tribune decided to up the payroll another $10 million to spend on a big free agent, that probably couldn't be considered buying a championship any more so than what they're doing now. Heck, with this farm system, if by chance the Cubs were actually to win in the near future (which won't happen), it would be with money.
  14. The '97 Marlins only had the 5th highest payroll in the majors, though (the 2004 Cubs were 6th, although the disparity was greater between them and the Yankees). They didn't even have the highest payroll of their division and only stand out because they were coming from 19.
  15. Say what you will, but they always find the postseason, and they'll probably win their division this year as well. Come to think of it, how many of the Yankees starters came up through their system? Jeter Wang Cano Cabrera Green Maybe this year will be different, but they've yet to show that spending the extra money actually works. That's what happens when you're stuck paying the Randy Johnsons of the world $15+ million a year. And practically speaking, if a team tries to buy a championship in a single season, the odds are that they'll not only fail, but that they'll have to drastically cut payroll for several seasons and go into rebuilding mode.
  16. Space was tight in the paper for today, but Dusty lamented a number of "questionable calls" on Pierre's attempted steals and that catchers have been throwing it "right on the toe" to nab Pierre. Ah. Yeah, it's a shame the opposing catchers are getting lucky so often. And considering Pierre's lifetime 73% success rate, things are surely going to get better for him in September. But hey, he's a true leadoff hitter. I'm sure they believe he'll start to beat out more routine grounders to second, as well.
  17. But the Yankees have shown that it doesn't really work all that well. You just end up overpaying and getting stuck in bad contracts. Come to think of it, Hendry would be perfect for this strategy.

Frankly, I'm a little more concerned with the running game at this point. There really hasn't been anything positive yet with the run blocking.
  19. Nice. Have there been any recent studies on the break even point? The latest I've seen uses data from 1999-2002 or something like that.
  20. Daytona hangs on to win 4-2. Johnson picked up the win in relief of Bronder. Boise lost 7-3. Just 3 hits for the Hawks. Renshaw's final line: 4 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 1 HR Mesa wins 6-4. Heredia, Castillo, Vanderhook, Rosario, and Inoa all had multi-hit games. Huseby's final line: 3 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 1 K
  21. 20 minutes left and Gallagher still has a 4 vote lead.

Here are some highlights from the game: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ar5_Kg-lCTo
  23. Santana leads the league not only in BAA, but also OBP and OPS against. He's second in SLG against.
  24. Pie finishes 2-5 with a double, but the I-Cubs lose . Epatt went 1-5. Daytona still leads 4-1. Renshaw has now given up 5 runs, but apparently none are earned. Huseby has given up 4 runs now through 3.

Tonight I didn't really see a difference aside from the pick and the drops.
