  1. .... for boy's basketball. Link
  2. lol wut
  3. What is this the NFL? Altidore gets a yellow for taking his shirt off.
  4. Hmm, ok I see your point. I keep on thinking that a guy who bats .250 but hits 40 HR's is way more valuable to his team than a singles spray hitter that bats .300. While that is true, I got too caught up with power in my example to not think of the devastating effect of outs. So yeah, in retrospect, player B would be better. Please excuse my Dusty moment. However, I do think there's a distinction between the statements "OBP is undervalued in OPS" and "OBP is more valuable than SLG". I'm not saying the first is true but the second false, I'm saying different arguments are required to justify each since they exist on different scales.
  5. Yes, the OPS statistic values SLG more than OBP, but that's ok since it should be. SLG, in essence, is more valuable than OBP. A single is more valuable than a walk, a double is more valuable than 2 walks, a triple is more valuable than 3 walks, and a HR is more valuable than 4 walks. Consider this scenario: Player A has 25 triples and 75 K's in 100 PAs, his OPS would be 1.000 (.250 OBP + .750 SLG) Player B has 25 singles and 50 walks and 25 K's in 100 PAs, his OPS would also be 1.000 (.750 OBP + .250 SLG) Which player would you want on your team? I would say player A since all those triples will clear the bags leading to more runs. With an adjustment factor of greater than 1 made to OBP, an adjusted OPS would clearly say player B is better. Therefore, if anything, OPS overvalues OBP.
  6. Indeed they did. DeRosa got a standing ovation as a pinch hitter, in a tie game, in the 8th inning on Saturday. Anyone who took part in that should be barred from Wrigley for life. That was embarrassing. If by embarrassing you mean absolutely awesome, than I completely agree with you. Seriously, why is that embarrassing? I think it's outstanding. It was a really, really critical situation late in a ballgame where DeRosa could have beaten us. And yet, Cubs fans rose together and gave a standing ovation to an opposing player. Who played for the Cubs for two seasons. Who had already received a standing ovation the day before. It's dumb. And like Jersey said, DeRosa was a nice player. That's it. He wasn't some Cubs legend. I fail to grasp how DeRosa has become one of the most popular Cubs of the last 20 years. He's a very good looking white dude who has an Ivy League education and is very well spoken. He was also a valuable contributor to the team the last two years. In short, he's everything the fans at Wrigley love in a player.
  7. Whoa, it looks fake cause it defies physics.

  9. Pretty much. Here are the standings right now: CLUB GP W L D Pts GD Brazil 2 2 0 0 6 4 Italy 2 1 1 0 3 1 Egypt 2 1 1 0 3 0 USA 2 0 2 0 0 -5 For starters, we need to beat Egypt and have Brazil beat Italy. Assuming that happens, we have to pass both Italy and Egypt in goal differential. To pass Egypt, we have to win by at least three goals. Anything less, and the other match doesn't matter to us. Assuming we're able to do that, we would need Brazil to beat Italy by at least three goals (which would tie us on GD) or to win out, Brazil would have to win by four. Basically we have to win by three and then have the sum of our win and Italy's loss be at least seven (i.e., we win 5-0, they lose 2-0). And that's not happening. LOL, well so much for that.
  10. USA would have a -2 differential too, 2nd tiebreaker is total goals, and the USA is ahead right now. And holy crap Italy almost scored on a wide open goal.
  11. OMFG DEMPSEY!!
  12. Second tiebreaker is total GOALS. That means if the USA scores 1 more goal and Italy gets shutout, the first tiebreaker is tied, and the USA has the advantage in the 2nd tiebreaker. HOLY CRAP this could actually happen.
  13. Considering he's hitting .241 overall, he's actually hitting better than average with runners on and RISP. The difference is way more pronounced looking at OPS. He's OPSing .724 for the season, .805 with runners on, and .931 with RISP. My main concern is that he's had only 32 AB's with RISP, which is symbolic of the offensive woes of this team.
  14. It's weird you would criticize him for not hitting with runners on, RISP and then use today's game as an example of this, which he had 2 PA's with a runner on (both on first base, no less) and 0 PA's where he had a RISP.
  15. that's terrible dancing even for white guys
  16. Have you seen the number of soccer fields recently? I don't know any little kid that hasn't played soccer at some point. It's definitely becoming more popular.
  17. Realistically we have no shot at the knockout stage right? The best we can do is have a 3-way tie for second with 3 points each, but we're way behind on the GD?
  18. It really sucks cause unearned runs don't count as much as earned runs.
  19. I watched that play several times. It makes you appreciate how good some of the world's best players are. They literally can make the ball do what they please with their feet. It also makes you realize how far the US still needs to go.
  20. Dammit, now he can't show the world how he "untucks 'em".
  21. Yeah, I totally agree. This kind of stuff is for the fans who like the whole mythos of the Cubs that is born from the "Ya gotta believe" and "This is our year" mantras. I'll still watch it though.
  22. Do you really think Soriano is going to listen to a rookie hitting coach? With a veteran club like the Cubs, it really is more on the players. I think Ramirez's absence hurt more than we thought.
  23. I agree ... fans need a target and MB is an easy one.
  24. Come on. Did you see what he did? I did, but no harm no foul. All it did was advance a dude from 1st to 2nd with a power hitter up to bat.
  25. How about we don't get on the guy who doubled in 2 out of our 3 runs?
