  1. you'd still need a home plate umpire to call safe and out at home and to call catcher's interference and whether the batter got hit by a pitch and stuff like that. there's no reason you couldn't just put a thing in his ear and let him signal balls and strikes anyway. Yep. Then you can choose your home plate ump by important things....like most entertaining strike grunts.
  2. I too can't stand bloody marys. I'm not much of a drinker anyway, but tomato juice...*shudder*

  6. Should trade Jackson and McNutt for King Felix before the Theo compensation issue gets resolved, so we can watch Boston fans/ownership go nuts.
  7. While this is probably the right spot for it, the other thread in Transactions is getting more replies, so I'll lock this one... viewtopic.php?f=6&t=60181
  8. their previous two games they'd barely lost at new england and then beat the rams by 27. the rams suck, but it's not like dallas has just completely collapsed. they pretty much only sucked ass in tonight's game. Yeah, I only was referring to the game last night.
  9. I assume that the article was probably written today's print edition and he was probably referring to this coming Sunday?
  10. No one said otherwise. But a lot of plays are clearly close enough that you know the call on the field is irrelevant, it's going to review. It robs those moments of their significance. Two options for next week's Cubs news: A) Albert Pujols signs a 5 year/$100 million contract with the Cubs. B )Albert Pujols says he wants to sign with the Cubs, but reserves the right to change his mind over the next few weeks. One is clearly more exciting than the other. I think that's a pretty poor example. I don't know about you, but I'd say both those bits of news would be pretty [expletive] exciting. I don't think having to wait a week and a half for Theo to be officially official robbed any excitement or enthusiasm from the board. Hell, it might have actually let it simmer and grow. At the very least though, I don't think anyone got to press conference day and thought "You know this is really great, but not nearly as good as it would've been a week ago." Nahh...people were excited about the result.

  12. Reasons that I feel confident about beating the Eagles, that may or may not be accurate: 1) Vick hasn't exactly torn up the Bears historically. In his career, he's only beaten the Bears 1 out of 5 tries, is 72-123 for 870 yards, 3 TD's, 3 INT's. 2) The Eagles haven't had an extremely tough schedule. They've only beaten the Rams and Redskins...not exactly brag worthy. 3) Bears will be coming off 2 weeks of preparation, and should have everyone healthy. There's really no situation, other than maybe opening day, that will be better for the Bears to be ready for a game. After this Sunday night game, I think the Bears will be 7 point underdogs. Good luck to them. Probably, but the Cowboys are playing like asshats.

  15. Didn't wanna start a new thread for this, and obviously this would only be a thought if for some reason neither Albert or Prince worked out...but HBT has a thread speculating if some NL teams might take a chance on Big Papi at 1B... http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/10/30/will-david-ortiz-have-national-league-suitors/
  16. So you would rather have the incorrect call rather than have to sort out situations like that? I'd much rather rely on the umpire to be a judge of the rules than a witness to an event. I trust his memory of the rulebook more than his eyes on a "blink and you miss it" play.

  19. Not a basketball thread.
  20. What? I remembered that movie because of the ridiculous gun, but I do not remember Jack Black being in it. I'll have to keep an eye out for that to be on tv again.
  21. Tom was just ready for the thing to freaking end.
  22. That will never happen, nor am I sure I would want it to. What would be a workable solution would be to install such systems so that the umpire's strike zone accuracy and consistency could be tracked and policed. Home plate umpire variability is one of the most annoying parts about baseball to me.
