  1. Winter leagues happen before Spring training and don't interfere with preparation for the season. Again my problem is with the timing of it. I might be a bit more interested if it were something that only happened in Olympic years like someone else suggested. Then it would be more special, and not something that is going to be a concern from year to year. Hockey and basketball only have "dream teams" and show off at the Olympics, and with baseball no longer being an Olympic event, it would be a great opportunity to show off the sport. But being a yearly thing during Spring Training bothers me.
  2. But if Bud comes to you and says "Vinestal, I'm gonna do this whole WBC thing whether you like it or not, but I'll let you choose when we have it each year..." when do you choose?
  3. I disagree. I don't think there's a terrible amount of interest in it from a casual fan perspective. To be honest I doubt a lot of casual fans even know it's going on. So I don't know that the interest level would change. And as far as the comparison to the pro-bowl, at least the pro-bowl doesn't affect the regular season. The WBC could. Someone is going to get injured during this thing, and it's going to affect their team this season. I'm really not a fan of the WBC. If you have to have it, I agree with SSB...put it after the WS.
  4. So I guess Sammy won't get an NRI huh???
  5. I'd consider any AB with a positive outcome a quality AB... I'd rather a player double down the line on the first pitch he sees than ground out to short on the tenth. Anyway, here's a breakdown of of how often Cubs hitters worked the count to various pitch counts in 2005: #P Frequency -------------- 1 889 2 1144 3 1111 4 1140 5 895 6 571 7 243 8 100 9 41 10 14 11 8 12 2 13 3 The Cubs only had 27 PA last season that lasted 10 pitches or longer. (Which works out to be about 0.4% of the team's total PA.) Countig 9 pitch PA bumps that total to 68 (1.1%) while lowering the threshold to 8 increases the total to 168 (2.7%). Telling you the team's record in those games is a bit more difficult, but I doubt it would tell you a whole lot, anyway. I'm sure it's a lot more work, but I wonder how these numbers compare to the league average?
  6. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060208wrigley,1,5308697.story?coll=cs-home-headlines The knothole is gonna be "closed" during games. You can look in when no games are being played though. Why have the thing then???
  7. The what? The article where people couldn't tell if he was quoting Baker, or guessing what Baker would say at the convention. Thanks for translating my gobbledegook... :P There was much ado made about that article in the baseball forum a few weeks ago Mizzou...sorry I could have been more clear.
  8. Dave Van Dyck, the author of the infamous "Was that a real Baker interview or not?" column, thinks that Sosa signing with the Nats might mean Soriano is expendableand might go to the Cubs...
  9. The numbers don't factor in Baker and his usage of Neifi. I'm relying on Baker to assure me of victory. So then it's not that you really believe that Spivey > Cubs 2b, you just think Baker is "creative" enough to ensure the least amount of production out of the position?
  10. The numbers don't factor in Baker and his usage of Neifi.
  11. Or if you're a baseball fan that just loves the sport. Whether you love the sport or not, they always hold more meaning if you have a vested interest somehow. Whether it be a real team, or an imaginary one.
  12. There's a link to it on this page. I forgot about the crime deterrent one...that was pretty hilarious.
  13. It was better than the other pregame choices.
  14. Unfortuantely we're still a ways away from any meaningful games yet. I'm not sure we'll see any meaningful games at all in 2006, but I'm still looking forward to it. They're all meaningful if you have a fantasy baseball team... :P
  15. Way too much football talk in this thread, not enough talk about the commercials... My favorites in no particular order: 1) Both Ameriquest commercials: Killing the fly with shock paddles, and woman gets knocked down by turblence. 2) Both careerbuilder ads: Sales are down, not up, and I work with a bunch of jackasses. 3) MacGyver! 4) Spock! 5) Magic Fridge.
  16. Drop the personal stuff everyone.
  17. Do you have the right thread? Also, back on topic: Who do you guys think we should platoon Jones with against lefties? Restovich? Mabry? Grissom? Hairston? Yes I had the right thread. The Mods must have edited the little argument that was festering here. I was attempting to be a peace maker. That thread was split off. Sorry about the confusion.
  18. I know I'll make some Chiefs games this year, but I think it'd be a lot of fun to make the Tennesse trip. We'll have to see how the summer goes... :)
  19. In a semi related story, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks are going to drop the "Mighty" from their name... http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2308588
  20. Agreed. Just about all the expansion teams of the late 80's through the 90's had terrible color schemes... Lots of teal/turquoise. Hornets, Magic, Panthers, Jaguars, Marlins, Devil Rays... even the Diamondbacks colors suck. The Rockies did ok with their colors and logos I thought. But the Grizzlies can go in that "sucky" group. I knew I was forgetting some. I agree. The Rockies did OK. The black and purple is pretty sweet. But the Grizzlies and Raptors (yes, I know, similar to Rockies colors... they just don't pull it off, I guess) both belong in teh "suck" group. Agree on the Raptors. They have a bit of pink in their colors too, and that really doesn't work for me. And the name "Raptors" always seemed like such a rip off of the Jurassic Park craze. I think they were created between the releases of the first and second movies...
  21. A coworker just made the same suggestion... ew.

  24. Not really Super Bowl related, but I didn't feel like starting a new thread for it. Looks like Jim Haslett is gonna be the defensive coordinator for the St Louis Rams. Good for Jim...the guy needs a head coaching break, and I think this will be a really good way to recharge his batteries for a while before taking another head coaching gig.
  25. If the Cubs could get Keans would that mean Jones would be a bench guy?
