  1. I hope none of you were the same ones ripping the Wrigley fans as "classless" for booing Corey.
  2. Good lord, an awfull lot of energy and time wasted directing venom towards a guy who put up a 107 OPS+ in his only full year as a Cub. Its not like he was Jeff Blauser bad (or Corey Patterson).
  3. If we could get Angel healthy enough to replace Eyre, I'm actually kind of liking our bullpen. Never thought I would say that this year.
  4. That wasn't even my favorite Hawk moment of the series. I liked the call Saturday when the Ump called a strike that caught the edge of the plate and Hawk said "Wow, why not keep throwing that if they're going to call it 8 INCHES off the plate?"
  5. Jon Daniels has orchestrated three major trades for the Rangers so far.. Traded Alfonso for Wilkerson and spare parts. Then traded Adrian Gonzales and Chris Young for a year year rental of Chad Eaton. Then traded CoCo Cordero and Mench to the Brewers for a 3 month rental of Carlos Lee.
  6. If Fox could play a lick of defense, he would have been called up by now. As it stands, he's experimenting with playing 1B and corner OF.
  7. I don't know that I would consider Barrett's contract an "albatross" considering its just a 4 month commitment. If the Cubs did get cash in return, it's a pretty vibrant red flag for a future deal for a big contract (Tejada?).
  8. You should have seen the teeth gnashing when we gave up Hee Seop Choi for Derek Lee.
  9. Barrett is basically a 4 month rental at this point, and he's got a long way to go offensively to make up for his lack of defense this year. If they can get a young catcher with some upside and a prospect for him, that's fine by me. Whether you happen to think defense in a catcher is overrated or not (and I tend to go with the opinion of a Greg Maddux on such matters) the opinions that count are the ones in the pitching staff, and they obviously don't like working with him.
  10. Funny, everything I read said that Vitters was a consensus Top 5 pick, wouldn't get past the Pirates at 4, and was the best hitter in the draft. Weird how how a high school prospect with no ceiling could be so highly regarded.
  11. The author of the piece wrote Friday Night Lights, which he won a Pulitzer for.
  12. It wasn't written for Cubs fans.
  13. Is anyone else surprised--like not at all--that Lee would be the only one sticking up for his "coach" and taking some responsibilty. He just appears to be the mature professional who gets all of this!! HE IS A STUD! I had a post after going to a game this spring that D LEE is worth the price of admission and this just cements the respect I have for him. I have not respected a cub like this since Ryno! A lot of it is the fact that he's a high character guy, and a lot of it has to do with the fact that since he actually does his job and produces he really doesn't need scapegoats like some other players do. I would certainly hope Lou has rubbed the bullpen the wrong way after the season they're producing.
  14. The problem with blaming "incompetent leadership" is that its often times an excuse by nonproductive employees to deflect criticism from their own incompetence. For me, it's pretty alarming that we have players who are actually shocked that the manager jumps their collective behinds when they play stupid baseball, and are outraged when there are consquences and demotions to be paid for habitually playing stupid baseball. Its a sad statement on how we're grooming players in our minor league system.
  15. When Texas hired Ron Washington, all you heard around the franchise was how Ron Washington was a player's coach, and he was such a breath of fresh air after the stifling atmosphere created by Buck Showalter. All these Rangers players who were unhappy with Showalter's gruff, heavy handed ways were now going to blossom. Result? The Rangers currently have the worst record in baseball. The manager really has very little influence on W and L's, unless he's an outlier genius like Bobby Cox. With that said I tend to lean towards the theory that if your players don't like hard coaching you need harder players, not a softer coach.
  16. are you familiar with a team called the Yankees? You got me there. Yankee fans would run Bobby Cox out of town after 3 months. Cubs fans would at least give him 4 or 5. Most Cubs fans took forever to turn on Dusty Baker. Only when contrasted against NSBB, who wanted him fired the day after he was hired. But any manager who takes his team within 6 outs of the World Series is going to be alloted several more yards of cord on his leash, especially if that's the closest the franchise has gotten to a World Series appearance in over 5 decades.

  18. Never in my life have I see a franchise and it's fans attribute the manager with having so much power on the W and L record. You would think the manager has a 30-40 game effect on a season by listening to Cub fans.
  19. Wow! I wish you'd been around when we needed people to say how Neifi was great and needed to stay on this team. You'd have helped Hendry lead us to the playoffs last season. Your post has explained to me why we should keep playing worse than average players over a better than average and almost free player. Where in my post did I say anything about wanting Neifi to play, ever? Or are you just using baseless conjecture? If so, I guess it would be fair to assume that if you were running the team we would have never made the Aramis or Lee trades, because giving up Bobby Hill and Choi would be asking too much. We would currently be rockin a lineup with Jason Dubois, Bobby Hill, Hee Seop Choi and Corey Patterson in order to pay Brian Giles and JD Drew superstar contracts. Right on man, that lineup with Hollandsworth, Neifi, Karros, and Womack with Pierre signed to a superstar contract would've crushed that lineup. Sadly, they probably would have.

  21. I apologize for questioning the undeniable greatness of Matt Murton. I realize that just the mere hint of skepticism means I'm nothing more than a neanderthal who hasn't the most rudimentary understanding of baseball (and evidently neither does the guys who work at BA, since they've never listed him as anything but a Tier 2 prospect.). I now know that some 35 year old virigin in his mother's basement came up with a meaningless formula and posted it on BP with very little peer review and gave it a generic a "(obscure playe) effect" moniker, which obviously makes it a law of nature. Clearly, Murton would be hitting at 120 OPS+ if not for old farts like Lou Penella. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to return to drawing pictures on my cave wall with deer antlers as my writing utensil. What do I know? I'm one of those primitive, backward thinking minds that thought Derrick Lee for Hee Seop Choi was a steal for the Cubs.
  22. Sweet, the most overrated "prospect" to come out of the Cubs system since Bobby Hill is going to get more at bats. World Series, here we come.
  23. Seriously, was there any doubt that Zambrano was the main instigator in the incident? I'm surprised it hasn't happened before.
  24. If they're .500 by the All Star break they are still very much in the NL Central hunt, and considering they have a + total run differential for the season that is not an unobtainable goal by any means. They're not hopeless. Flawed, but not hopeless.
  25. Keep a look out for this Sunday's New York Times. The feature article is by Pulitzer Prize winning author H. G. "Buzz" Bissinger (Friday Night Lights) about kids who blow out their arms pitching in ultra competitive high schools in Texas racking up ridiculous pitch counts. Kerry is the centerpiece of the article with a candid interview.
