  1. I like DeRosa, but having him play a corner outfield spot does not a "stacked" lineup make.
  2. If Cuban was an irrational hothead making decisions on emotions, he would have blown up the Mavs after getting ousted in the first round of the playoffs.
  3. Here's a post from Cuban's blog entitled "Moneyball for the NBA' http://www.blogmaverick.com/2004/04/01/moneyball-for-the-nba/
  4. http://www.slushpile.net/index.php/2006/03/09/interview-mark-cuban-businessman/ Living in Dallas, I also remember a story told by Cuban on local radio where he talked about how he hired a team of statisticians when he took over the Mavs to help develop better statistical models than the antiquated ones typically used by the NBA. He said every team keeps track of 3 point %, but his stat teams actually broke it up into quadrants so they could tell where on the 3 point arc teams were most proficient. They noticed the Spurs were a great outside shooting team just based on their 3 point %, but if you forced them to shoot from the baseline corner they were only half as proficient. So the Mavs protect the angles, and let them have the baseline. The Spurs have always shot below their season average from 3 pt. range when they face the Mavs ever since.
  5. I can't imagine his stance on steroids will make any friends given the league's sensitivity on the matter at the moment. http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-24-30/Mark-Cuban-Wants-Performance-Enhancing-Drugs.html
  6. Omaha evidently has a pretty high billionaire to population ratio.
  7. With a 4th one reportedly on the verge of coming back from injury.
  8. Yeah it always fun to cheer against good guys. Especially when they aren't on your team. You mean like making fun of how bad Neifi is for the Tigers? If that's wrong, I don't want to be right.
  9. Kind of surprised Lou hasn't even entertained the idea of occasionally using Ward at a corner outfield spot.
  10. The problem with the Cubs lineup is they have two black holes in the bottom of the lineup at C and CF, and three blackholes in the lineup when Zambrano isn't pitching (and Marquis to a lesser extent) and four blackholes in the bottom of the lineup with Itzturis starts. Its almost impossible for them to be anything more than a slightly above average team with automatic outs comprising almost half of the lineup. They could eliminate one of those holes if Soriano would move to CF, but that will never happen.
  11. I don't see Atlanta trading Salty (who they absolutely love) for a Tiexera rental. Boras is going to take him to the highest bidder on the market in the offseason.
  12. Yeah, I agree. I was thinking the most likely scenerio is the Cubs package both of them for someone like Shawn Green.
  13. Sinkerballers aren't immune to BABIP, but they can compenstate for it by allowing more negligible hits (grounders through the infied vs. linedrives off the outfield wall), allowing fewer homeruns, forcing double plays and issuing fewer runs. Marquis still has problems with walks, but he has been keeping the ball on the ground and inside the park. As long as he keeps that up, he'll be effective. If he doesn't, it will be 2006 all over again.
  14. I tend to not pay much attention to BABIP when it comes to sinkerballers. I focus on BB/9, GB/FB and HR%.
  15. In other words, ignore all his good starts, focus on his bad starts and that tells the true story. Sounds objective to me.
  16. Marquis turned in the performance of the year so far. (With an assist from the wind).
  17. Stick with him, but it wouldn't hurt to start warming up a guy. When Marquis falls apart he does it in a hurry.
  18. And miss out on the unintentional comedy gold like yesterday? No way.
  19. 2 good early signs ... Cubs are smacking Bush around and Marquis threw three straight ground outs.
  20. If that's the mandate, I'm not sure Hendry would be able to eat the contracts of Cesar or Eyre either.
  21. Our bullpen is going to be destroyed after this series.
  22. How stupid of him not to listen. The Braves are planning to move on in 2008 without him. He is pretty much hurting himself. If Chip Carey is trying to give me hitting advice, I probably wouldn't listen either.
  23. I think I'd rather have Jacque than Hillenbrad. At lest Jacque spot at centerfield. Hillenbrad is basically a designated hitter who hits like Cesar. Oh, he's got a bad attitude too.
  24. I don't see Jacque getting traded anytime soon. When it comes out that Hendry tried to eat $6.6 of a $7.2 contract, its pretty obvious he's not getting a lot of offers. There's really no incentive for any team to have a sense of urgency about trading for him. The only thing that's going to make JJ more appealing is if he starts getting hot (and on his behalf, he is playing better) and makes himself a more attractive player. I'm not sure Lou is going to give him the playing time necessary to do that, and nor should he if his job is to win as many baseball games as possible with this roster this year.
  25. Getting kind of antsy about Guzman. They claim its no big deal, but he's now had over 3 weeks of rest without any report.
