  1. Yup, fair enough, there's some truth in that statement for sure. The baserunning errors are just a consistent annoyance to me, I guess. They've been going on for so long it seems like.
  2. Take this stat for what you will: Outs recorded on the basepaths 2009 (doesn't count caught stealing or pickoffs): Brewers: 20 Cards: 22 Cubs: 22 Astros: 24 Reds: 33 Pirates: 33 By that stat, the Cubs aren't the worst baserunning team in their division this year, much less the worst in the majors. I think we both know those numbers don't tell the entire story, but it's still interesting. I thought we'd be worse than that, honestly.
  3. Literally 10 minutes ago when bradley was going on contact to be "aggressive" I was referring to the fact that if Bradley was running on contact, why wasn't Kosuke?
  4. so wait, now it's good to be aggressive? That's all Lou was doing with bradley? Now what would have happened if fuld ran and was thrown out? Of course it's good to run the bases aggressively. When have I suggested otherwise? Of course I don't mean stupid-aggressive like Soto at 3B last night, but yea.
  5. he noticed bad baserunning? what a key managerial eye. wait, you noticed it, too? forget brenly, sign up this diamondmind guy. you're a web bot aren't you? No, web bots provide more substance to their respective forum.
  6. Can we hire the most interesting man in the world from Dos Equis to play CF?
  7. And there's another example of the unquantifiable benefits of good fundamentals/aggressiveness. Pitcher is annoyed by Fuld at 1B, and commits an error on the pickoff.
  8. he noticed bad baserunning? what a key managerial eye. wait, you noticed it, too? forget brenly, sign up this diamondmind guy. Man I wish I was as smart as you!!
  9. This seems to be a common trend that we've had problems with for many years. Remember how much fun it was to watch Moises Alou on the basepaths? /twitch
  10. See? This is what I'm referring to in the two other threads I posted in. We're borderline moronic as far as the fundamentals go, and once again, Brenly notices it and gripes about it. We have to be the worst baserunning team in baseball. And you know what, it's been like this for years, and nothings ever done about it. Pathetic!!
  11. No need to be flippant. I thought this was a pretty tame and decent discussion going on. And it was an excellent way to point out the fallacy of assuming that small ball was responsible for the Diamondbacks' WS or their offensive output that year. No, an excellent way would be to tell me in detail why you hold your opinion. The moustache comment was flippant.
  12. We'd have to look up the % of times runners scored when a hit and run took place in an inning compared to when it didn't to really form any sort of truth here. Saying they're "one of the worst things" in baseball is obviously not factual at all, and is just your personal opinion, which I think is wrong. Also, I don't think bunts are wasting outs. That is certainly debatable.
  13. I had a longer, more florid post prepared. However, I think simply quoting this one is more concise, efficient and pithy. I would of preferred the "florid post". I was interested in reading why you had your opinion. If I didn't care what you had to say, why would I respond to you? :) It's disappointing and annoying when people reply with those one liners like abuck did. That elitism is really tiresome.

  15. Funny how the 01 D-Backs scored 818 runs (5.05 a game) with all that small ball. Sorry, the stats proove you wrong. No, they don't. The question isn't whether or not they scored runs, but if small ball maximized their run scoring ability. Well, if winning World Series isn't enough to convince you that something's being done right in a mangerial sense, what WOULD convince you? I think you're arguing just to argue at this point.
  16. Funny how the 01 D-Backs scored 818 runs (5.05 a game) with all that small ball. Sorry, the stats prove you wrong. Yea, Exile, you're gonna have to explain to me just how and why Brenly is "overly reliant" on small ball, because at a quick glance it's easily arguable that you're just flat wrong. Yea maybe he's more reliant on it than other managers, but even if so, why is that by definition a bad thing?
  17. Not only that, but there's the unmeasurable factor of added pressure on the pitcher due to a RISP, therefore maybe he hangs a breaking ball that gets jacked out. That stuff matters. Just because you can't quantify something doesn't make it irrelevant. That's a common issue I have with a lot of posters on here, actually.
  18. Yea, I couldn't disagree with this post more. Not saying you're wrong, but we apparently have vastly different opinions on how a ballclub is composed. I know baseball is the most "individual" of the team sports, but to act like players operate in a vacuum certainly isn't accurate imo.
  19. Yup, exactly. The key here is "maximizing scoring chances", not just bunting and playing small ball because it's your "philosophy". Maximizing scoring chances is just meaningless words. What the heck does it even mean? It's called "making things happen" which is what managers do to make themselves look involved and important. Conventional wisdom does not criticize a manager for making things happen, if a sac bunt attempt fail, he's still congratulated for trying it. I don't think it's meaningless words at all. There's a massive difference in my eyes between the offensive goals of a team like the Cubs, and say the Dodgers or Rays.
  20. Same thoughts here. If anything I'd classify him as average defensively, especially if he's in CF instead of a corner spot.
