You got it backwards. I you transfer down to 1AA you don't have to sit out a year, or if you have finished undergrad and are taking grad school classes at the new college. Some times the NCAA will approve a waiver for family medical issues. Yeah, Sam McLauren is in that situation with Illinois. He graduated from Coastal Carolina and transferred to Illinois for grad school. He had one remaining year of eligibility and was able to start right away. I believe they had a preferred walk-on that transferred from Chicago State, or something too and was able to play right away. I'd have to look that up, though. Edit: Kevin Berardini played at Loyola Marymount, but redshirted his freshman year and transferred to Illinois before his sophomore year. He retained all 4 years of eligibility.
