  1. Actually, the difference is negligible. And aside from that, its incomplete. Its NOT about making contact-its about making a specific type of contact in appropriate situations. Hitting the ball anywhere except 2B, 1B, or RF with a runner on 2nd and less than 2 outs is worthless. Hitting anything except a deep fly ball with a runner on 3rd/less than 2 outs is worthless. And futhermore, it creates the opportunity for more than 1 out. To say "more times than not" is impossible to prove. There are no numbers to support that.
  2. He wrote this: "I just think that it is really fun to watch these 2 pitch. It just reminds me of 03 with Wood and Prior. " It looks like the comparison he was making was to his experience in 2003, not the talent level of Wood and Prior as it relates to Marmol and Marshall. The "it" refers back to the previous sentence-i.e. the verb "watch." The "with" also distinguishes the point. Had he been referring to the talent level of Wood/Prior, he would have written "It reminds me of Wood and Prior in 03." Okay, I need to get a life...
  3. So the Cubs will allow technology and new ways of thinking to influence the phone calls they make to the bullpen, but they refuse to allow technology/new ways of thinking to influence how they think about the abilities of offensive players... nice.
  4. Ground Out-4 Ground Out-1 Ground Out-4
  5. For twice the cost.
  6. And provided that they either score more or Maddux pitches well. Long-term, if they approach every at bat like that for the rest of the year, they'll turn this around.
  7. I don't care that they only scored one run-that was a great inning. It should pay off as the game goes along, provided they stay that patient.
  8. Wait...didn't Buck just say that "Eckstein is one of the best in baseball at hitting with 2 strikes?" And then he hit into a double play? I can't handle this-Joe Buck was actually wrong! My whole world view is shattered... I'm going to need some therapy after this...
  9. He made an attempt to catch a ball thrown to his right and his momentum brought him into Jones, tagging him in the process.
  10. So far, according to Buck/McCarver: Molina (>.200) should be an all-star. Eckstein is just a "flat out great player". Pujols is some kind of God on earth, capable of playing every position simultaneously and still winning the World Series by himself. Anything else?
  11. Was that the sound of the "greatest fans in baseball" actually booing their players? I thought they were sooooo much better than that...at least that's what my Cardinal fan friends say.
  12. Man, what a horrible trade by the Cardinals. Mulder for Haren, Barton, and Calero? Haren has the same numbers as Mulder over the last two years. Never really realized how awful a trade that was...
  13. Hmmm...it couldn't be because he threw 117 and 124 pitches in his previous outings, could it? Given the extent to which this team goes to hide injuries, and their reluctance to accept any pitch-count related injuries, it wouldn't surprise me to see them lying about this.
  14. I just have a question: I've heard numerous players explain how they're at fault for the current state of the team (from Walker to Barrett to others), and I've heard Jim Hendry explain that he's responsible for the current state of the team (in the Trib), but I haven't heard a single thing from Baker or the coaches taking ANY responsibility for the season thus far. Has anyone heard anything from a single coach taking any semblance of responsibility for this?
  15. The way this management team works, it will have to be an absolute embarassment of a year for any real change to happen. And 6th place, behind the Pirates, would be that embarassment. So, if this team is not going to challenge for a playoff spot, I would actually (gulp) prefer 6th place to 5th place.
  16. I don't think its fair to say (if you didn't last year-if you did, that's fair game) that Patterson shouldn't have been dealt. HOWEVER, I think the Patterson situation should certainly be part of a larger discussion as to the organization's ability to get players, especially young players, to perform. There's only so many times you can say "how come everybody leaves here and does so well" before you have to question what's going on here that is making them not succeed.
  17. I think I can muster up all the possible excitement I can about this deal to say.... meh.
  18. And 2/3 of his HRs were at the bandbox the Rangers play in.
  19. Ensberg had a better OPS last year than Ramirez has had in any season other than one. And he continues to outperform him this year. Clemens had a 1.87 ERA last year. Wood and Prior have been .500 pitchers since 2003. There's nothing even close there.
  20. This is the atttitude the Cubs Front Office always has, and it bites them every time. They would always rather go for quantity over quality. He'll make $13 million for the rest of the year, or roughly equal to the salaries the Cubs are paying to: Hairston ((2.3) Perez (2.5) Rusch (2.75) Pierre (5.75) So would you rather pay $13 million for one great player, or $13.4 for four awful ones? Ok, I'll give you 3 of those players, although I think one of those players has a lot of upside on defense. But to call Pierre awful is a BIG stretch. Struggling in 1/4 of the year, even if he's starting to come back little by little, does not an awful player make. He's been quite good over the past few years. No, he hasn't. He was mediocre at best last year, brings only one element to the game-speed-and is a liability in the field. He has steadily declined over two consecutive years, and the Cubs gave up at least one solid prospect for him. He's been bad for a lot longer than 1/4 of one year.
  21. Not a fair comparison, Pierre was not brought in to drive guys in. Sure, it is part of his all around job duty, but I would rather his RBI's be down and his OBP up! True...that was more of a joke. But I'll be happy to see what he earns per appearance on base.
  22. In order to get the Wild Card, the Cubs would have to catapult over 9 teams. There are other divisions, too. Houston catapulted over 12. Very tough road to hoe, but not impossible. We'll see what happens. Last time I checked, we didn't have Oswalt, Pettitte, Clemens, and Lidge. Nor did we have Berkman, Biggio, Ensberg, et. al. You're right. Its not impossible. But its about a once-in-a-hundred-years occurrence. And it takes a team much more talented than this one.
  23. Look, its easy to make kooky "dollars per pitch/dollars per inning", etc. for players who make a lot of money. But the reality is that EVERY player is paid an unbelievable amount of money. And taking a 4 month flyer on a guy who has done nothing but dominate almost every year for the last 20 years versus paying four bad players the same amount is a good gamble for me. Anyone ever figure out how much Pierre gets per RBI?
  24. Many people have complained that the Cubs have not spent enough to win. They are currently spending roughly $95 million this season. So here's a little game I propose to them: Create the best team you can. Use only $95 million. Use only current Cubs, Cubs minor leaguers, and players who have been free agents in the last three years. Maybe that will show people that $95 million can go alot further than the Cubs management team has made it.
  25. Well that only works if you are planning on playing with only 21 players on the roster. I know they vastly overpaid for their bench but you do still have to pay players 22 through 25. Theriot, Restovich, Coats: Each makes the minimum. Would they somehow give the team less than what these guys have given the team?
