  1. I think a better option would be to try and make the offense better and still play the season.

  3. Was it your impression that there were a lot less Bears fans at this game than the Giants game? I thought there were more in my area, but it sure didn't sound like there were as many as last week. Quiet stadium. The notoriously rowdy Jets fans were the quietest NFL audience I had ever been to at a game. And what the heck were those foam white things supposed to be? stupid sticks The messed up opening kickoff situation, and the very slow start to the game, killed the crowd. I've been to many Jets games, and it's usually more exciting. But most crowds are probably dead when getting shut out.
  4. Odd. I wonder why they would do that. Because they plan on having another deal done before then, thus allowing them to have a mega-conference about all the moves.

  6. Definitely not something new. Don't have a link on it for ya, though. Probably you've not heard of it because teams hardly ever reach their limit- especially the Cubs. I'd also bet that money has more to do with not signing 5 type A FAs than any league imposed limit. I think the Yankees hit the limit a couple years ago. One thing that throws it off is lots of guys qualify for A/B status without being that big of an acquisition. Middle relievers, and utility guys can get such status. You can sign 2 relievers, one utility guy, a mediocre starting pitcher, and a bottom of the order hitter and hit your limit without any one huge signing.
  7. 95 RBIs are good from any spot in the lineup I completely disagree. 95 RBI from the 3/4/5 spot is below average. Most teams get much more than that from those spots in the order, and most of the guys who hit in those spots play everyday, or close to it. I'll give you the 3/4 hitters but I'd bet most #5 hitters don't drive in 95 RBIs. In the NL, 10 teams got more than 95 from the 5 spot. The 8/9 spots are 109/107. Assuming your 5th hitter plays 150 games, that's 92.6% of games, which equates to 99 of 108 RBI. That right there is an average 5 hitter, I'd say. Most true 5 hitters should play more than 150 games, and they should equate for a larger percentage of their team's RBI in that spot than their replacement. 95 is mediocre at best, for a middle of the order hitter. From a 6 hitter you are talking above average. From a leadoff hitter, it's huge.
  8. Why would you even think about Izturis leading off? He's a terrible option for that spot. Hopefully he's not even on the team next year. BUt if he does play, he should never be above the 8 spot.

  10. I still see plenty of room to make moves. If little else happens, I'll hate this contract. But I see more coming.
  11. They did what they had to do to win this game, without showing anything to the Patriots. This had classic letdown game potential, but the Bears methodically beat a good team on the road. If anything, this game showed teams that you can't go into the Bears game thinking, "stop Grossman, and we win". Everybody talked about beating the Bears by forcing Rex into mistakes. But they just showed it's not that simple. This defense made Brady look silly the week before. I think this was a play it close to the vest type of game. They held almost everything back, and did the bare minimum to win. If I'm a Bears opponent in the coming weeks, I'm thinking long and hard about how I'm going to beat them, because there is no simple plan.
  12. Does sound like something I would have said. Where was it from?
  13. Does spending $17 million on Soriano mean the Cubs will win a WS though? I'm sorry, I'm just having trouble leting this go. It brings them closer, yes. But it's a pretty far cry from a sure thing that they would even make the playoffs with this team. More needs to be done. Okay, I'll stop now. Obviously more needs to be done. If this was it, and there was no room for anything else, then it's a terrible signing. But that doesn't seem to be the case.
  14. Well, I must be slicing it a different way, because I think it's decent. I don't believe it's going to be straight up 8 years. There has to be some leeway with options that can shorten the deal. 8 guaranteed years would be a problem. But 5 with a possibility for a big buyout might not be.
  15. Yep. Well, they can get a little better via trade, but even there, the best bet is to take bigger money players off other team's payrolls. But by and large, the best way for this team to get significantly better (and they have to get significantly better), is to spend. And that's going to include overspending.
  16. I never would have thought that I'd be the guy defending a signing of Soriano. Hey, the guy is flawed. There is no question. He will probably have a few disappointing seasons in his 8 year stay in Chicago. But if you're going from a $95m payroll to a $115m payroll, then it's not that hard to fit in an inflated contract for Soriano and still be good. There's still plenty of room to improve the pitching staff, and get another bat.
  17. Soriano and Jacque Jones are not similar players. Soriano is more similar to Aramis Ramirez than Jones. Soriano is not ideal. And he's a risky signing. But he's not just a faster Jones with a little more pop.
  18. Blurb about Lee in the ESPN Rumor Central. Does this guy really consider Lee to be a superior hitter to JD Drew and Barry Bonds? Wow. It's not an indefensible position to say that Lee is a better hitter than Drew. In what way?
  19. I have to believe it's structured so that the last couple years will be much higher than $17 million.
  20. Agreed. A guy in my office said Michael Kay had Lou on his radio show for a half hour Friday. He was talking about getting a young bench. Floyd doesn't seem to fit that bill. But, if he was a bench guy, I'd live with it. He also said they have an offer out to Gary Mathews to play CF. GMj scares me. His 2006 was worthy of a $10 million deal, but his career screams 4th outfielder. He's just so inconsistent. He's been abysmal in some years, but has had some good years as well, only in hitters parks. I agree but Mathews would just cost money while another CF may cost players. If the Cubs have the cash let them spend it and keep their players old and young and then trade the players to aquire the guy they want. IMO, it leaves the resources free and open. Yes, if cash is limited then you do the player trade. I'd rather spend on FA than trade myself. But, Mathews is a guy capable of completely crapping the bed next year. I've heard he might get $10 million. To me, if Drew is getting $14 then you've got to take him over a $10m GMj.
  21. There's two ways to go about selling a company, cutting back heavily on costs, or increasing the value with a little short-term investment. It's like spicing up a house before putting it on the market. Spend $20,000 on a new bathroom hoping to benefit down the line in the total costs. Spend $50,000 to fix up your place and you might be able to sell it for $100,000 more than it was before. In this case though, you saddling the future owner with some rather large liabilities. Then again, if there have already been talks with a potential buyer, he might have indicated that he wants this team to look better now.
  22. I've been wondering about this theory, that teams are awash in money. Is it really true, or is it a case of the Cubs entering the fray with the big 2, who have always spent? As far as I can tell, only the Cubs and Red Sox have spent significant cash this offseason. The Angels, Blue Jays and Tigers have been steadily increasing payroll the past few years, but is anybody but the Cubs really in-line to significantly blow through past payroll levels? Philly might have some money to spend, but that's only because they gave away Abreu. The Mets might be spending, but it'll be because of money that was coming off their books. The White Sox don't seem ready to significantly increase payroll, they already did that last year. Past offseasons spending sprees were fueled by the Yankees and Red Sox. Then Anaheim, Toronto and Detroit would occasionally make a splash with one or two big moves. Now, throw the Cubs into the group of NYY and BOS, and it could look like everybody is spending like nuts, when really, only the Cubs are doing so. Anyway, just thought it was interesting that despite all the talk of everybody having cash, there have really only been a couple moves so far. And there hasn't been a real indication of anybody but the Cubs going bonkers.
  23. I can't believe how much the national media is dissing Grossman for that game.
  24. I made the same mistake. I said Mathews, because I thought it was asking who we thought would get the job, not should. They should get Drew.
