  1. If there was interest in fairness Dusty wouldn't routinely blast young rookie mistakes and gloss over veterans making the exact same mistakes.
  2. Are you seriously saying Dusty is racist? That is the silliest thing I've ever read on NSBB. Yes, I'm seriously saying it, and Dusty has only supported that notion with his words and actions. I have three words for you...pot, kettle, black. That I'm a racist? That's rich.
  3. I don't think you can expect linear progression. Guys are going to have ups and downs. Expecting him to get better each month, or expecting him not to have consecutive bad months, is not a very good way to judge a player.
  4. Sheffield should not be an option. I like Giles, but there's significant risk that this isn't just a down year. Plus, I don't see Murton getting a shot in the 2 hole, if he couldn't even get the call last night over Theriot, he won't next year with Pierre and Izturis around.
  5. Once a player on the 40 man roster is "optioned" to the minors at any point during the year (even to begin the season), that player's option for that season is burned. Subsequent to that, he can be yo-yo'd as many times as is possible and not burn another option during that season. Was Marmol on the 40-man by opening day or was he added when first called up? Well, I just looked it up myself and he was added in November, which means his option was already burned at the conspiracy theory about hiding him on the DL to protect his option status doesn't hold up.
  6. Who? They got Beltran, Pedro, Delgado, Glavine, and now Green. I can't imagine a Mets fan saying the Mets are cheap? ARod comes to mind first. The Mets have been barely ahead of the Cubs. If Cubs fans claim the Trib is cheap, don't you think Mets fans might claim their owners are cheap, given their much larger revenue base?
  7. Agreed - Hendry ought to jump on him. But as fat as Hendry is he might hurt him...... :D Just kidding. I'd like to see Victor, the Cubs need a new hometown hero now that O'Malley is done.
  8. Off the top of my head, I'd say accurate is more appropriate than harsh. They may have some talented young guys who could step up, but as far as showing it on the field, they've got very little. And Muhammed is just not the same guy he was when he was a stud.
  9. Well, that and Mets\Yankees owners are willing to let their GM's spend whatever they want and need. Whatever they want is a bit of stretch. The Mets owners, for one, have been beaten up in the press for cheaping out on more than one player. They also aren't that much higher than the Cubs, and were below the Cubs a couple years ago.
  10. I think this goes back to the be aggressive mantra. Some people defend it by saying the Cubs mean people should be aggressive at the right times (when taking the extra base is smart, when the pitch is in the zone, etc), but in practice, Cubs players up and down the roster have hurt the team with over aggressive play. Whether it's swinging at everything, stupid baserunning mistakes or even stupid coaching decisions (like sending guys home unnecessarily), over aggressive play has been one of the many problems of the team. Guys either aren't getting the message, or the message isn't being sent. But the people in charge of the Cubs need to rethink and adjust their be aggressive mantra.
  11. It's funny that a good hitting team will keep working to improve its offense (Yankees, Mets), but Hendry can't lift a finger to do a thing for his pathetic offense that has been bad for 4 straight years.
  12. It is a stupid play and there's nothing wrong pointing it out. I just find it funny how Baker has to emphasize that it's a YOUNG, A VERY YOUNG mistake. It's funny because Baker's veterans make similar so-called "rookie mistakes" all the time. They've done it since he's gotten here. Yet the only ones who get called out of making "young" or "rookie" mistakes are the actual young rookies. Apparantly it's not a young rookie mistake if you do the same thing as a veteran.
  13. Cedric is a complicated fella. While reading about this story I was reminded about the Kreutz incident last year. Is this Benson thing really any worse than two teammates fighting at a shooting range? From what I've read Cedric admits he was wrong for leaving early, feels bad about it and is trying to be a better teammate. He's a little bummed about guys squeeling on him to the press though. I think I feel a lot better about this now than I did yesterday when I first heard the story. This doesn't necessarily have to be something that drags the team down. TJones is not a stud RB and Benson has not yet shown that he is either. The competition back there is good. It's not like one blocks for the other.
  14. This is similar to the argument against Rich Hill. At which point? Well, you can say he's bad now, because he is bad now. But he's 23, with less than a season of major league baseball under his belt. I'd give him at least 2 full years to see if you can get improvement, and unless he plateaus at this levels during that time, still give him a chance to show some more.
  15. They can't, unless they overhaul the OF offense. In the best case scenario I can imagine for this offseason, I can't imagine Hendry improving the OF enough by way of FA signings or trades to cover for having those two in the middle infield, unless they trade Aramis or DLee. As much as I think Ronny will prosper under a new manager, I don't like taking the chance with him and Izturis both starting. Hopefully, Hendry will find a taker for Izturis in a package for a big OF bat. Yeah, he probably wouldn't be able to improve it enough. Well, you have to keep Ronny around anyway, because Izturis is as fragile as a pitcher.
  16. They can't, unless they overhaul the OF offense.
  17. There's no way of ever making such a calculation, but the fact is he had the out, he just hit the runner with the throw. I think the far bigger error in judgement was Dusty moving him to shortstop after starting him at 2nd and trying to get him to switch from being a SS to a 2B for the past 3 weeks. Brenly called him out for that one.
  18. But you're willing to accept the same thing from an older player who makes a lot more money? I don't think Ronny has much of a chance of being good. I think he can be servicable. And if you are getting servicable, you might as well pay the minimum.
  19. Agreed! I can't really remember a SS or 2nd basemen that has made so many poor choice decisions as Cedeno has. I hope people aren't talking about the throw home. That was the right move, he had Burrell by several steps, the throw was just not a good one. I disagree that it was the right move. In a scoreless game early on, you should always go for the gauranteed out at first. Especially when the pitcher who can't hit was due up next and would have been the third out. yeah, i think that was a horrible decision. take the out at first, strike out lieber, let them have their one run. if i had to pick one guy to keep between murton and cedeno, i'd take murton. I don't believe that was a sure out at first. But I thought there were no outs at the time. If there was one with Lieber on deck than yes, he should have gone to first. But his momentum was taking him away from first and he had Burrell by a couple steps. It was more execution than decision making.
  20. I disagree that he hasn't done anything to show he'd be able to start. His 2005 happened. You can't just ignore it. He was great in AAA, at 22, and solid in the majors, again, at 22. He's been disappointing this year. But anybody who thought it was going to be a straight line upward just wasn't being realistic. This is why I was so dead set against going into this season with the lineup as weak as it was and Murton and Cedeno starting together. You had to expect struggles. The odds are in his favor for improving over the next couple of years. Cesar Izturis had a 52 and 61 OPS+ at 22 and 23. Everybody seems to be willing to pencil him in as starter but unwilling to give Ronny a shot. This makes no sense to me. I'd much rather go with Cedeno than Izturis. Neither is going to be all that good next year, but one does it for next to nothing. If you are going to successfully introduce young players to the lineup, you have to do it smart. You have to surround them with good teammates, put them in a position where they don't need to be great, and put up with prolonged struggles.
  21. I don't think it makes a lot of sense to base the next 7+ months of production on the pace of his past 2 months. He is at .331 this year and was at .326 last year. I'd bet he'll finish in that area this year and next year, and that's bad.
  22. I expect him to be as crappy in 2007 as he has been in 2005 and 2006.
  23. The Cubs aren't going to get any comp picks for Pierre. Do you mean because they are going to re-sign him, or because they won't offer him arbitration? They will resign him.
  24. Hiring Boras is just a means to getting the most cash out of Hicks.
  25. The Cubs aren't going to get any comp picks for Pierre.
