    Why? Geoff Blum is a valuable Left-handed hitter off the bench. He can pretty much play anywhere on the field. He has some power in his bat, and he puts the bat on the ball. I love his versatility. He sucks.

    Maybe. He's far to inconsistent. His age 27 season was great. But 2004 was his only other good year. He's 32 now, coming off his worst season yet.

    (Incorrect answer buzzard) Soriano will be a bust, but the situations between Soriano and Beltre are FAR different. Beltre had one ONE great season, after several FAILED seasons, and his one career yr, came in on his walk year. Soriano has had atleast some decent productive yrs---with the Yankees at least---in his past. Maybe 2006 is a career yr, but he is a better bet to be worth his next contract then Beltre is on his contract. How old was Beltre when he signed his big contract? 26

    They've always wanted to win, and they've already opened the wallets. The problem is Hendry's ability to use money to acquire quality players.

    There are highly publicized deaths every week, and thousands of other deaths that go unreported. I think it is much better to have a story about Tillman's death, than no stories about soldier's deaths. At least it brought attention to the soldiers' plight. It's not a matter of him being more special. But the fact that he walked away from millions to serve is a story worth being told. Likewise, the guys who died in the battle that eventually turned into the Blackhawk Down got a ton of press, including books, movies and tv specials about them. What makes them so special that they deserved the attention?

    Cliches and overboard are entirely different. The cliches are thing BS about putting things in perspective, then the same guys will go out and freak out about ARod in the playoffs or whatever else. I don't get complaining about the Tillman coverage just because he got more than most soldiers. You, if you don't want to hear the stories, it's extremely easy to avoid them. People seem to like complaining about the media a lot. They are an important part of society, but many think of them the same way they think of your typical congressman. To counter the anti-media talk, here is a nice story on the Lidle situation, written by a member of the media, and friend of Lidle's.

    If somebody gives him a five year contract they will have a pretty highly paid 35 year-old playing for them. With his frame, I don't think he's going to be too goood at that age. If I were interested in him I'd give him a high-dollar, front-loaded three-year contract with a team option for a fourth, but nothing more. Something like 14 12 10 15 For a guy that turned down $70m, $36m is an extremely low guarantee. If you wanted to front load a deal you'd be better off going: $16m $16m $14m $16m option with $4m buyout At least that guarantees him $50m, and gives him a chance to sign a new deal at 33 (well, he'd sign at 33, but play at 34). I still doubt he settles for under 4 guaranteed though.

    Along your line of thinking, considering what the Mets gave Beltran two years ago, that doesn't seem too unreasonable. Beltran two years ago was 3 years younger than Soriano is now, and Beltran is better. Carlos essentially has 5/87 (with much of it deferred) left on his deal, and is 1.5 years younger, and was significantly more productive this year. I'd bet Beltran is much better the next 5 years. But the Cubs missed that boat.

    Who is WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!!!!????? I'm not a big Soriano fan, but the Cubs are in a position where if they could get him for CF, or 2B, they probably need to.

    Think we could get him for 5/60 if we promised him 2nd base? Why in the world would he take less money just to play 2B over OF? I figured because he hated the OF so much and has made it well known he wants to go back to 2B. Has he? I was under the impression that the initial hate for the OF was about how it might downgrade his value (taking away the 2B premium), and that after playing out there, he was fine with it.

    Think we could get him for 5/60 if we promised him 2nd base? Why in the world would he take less money just to play 2B over OF? He might take a little less if he gets a NTC. I believe that is a big sticking point with him. DC wants nothing to do with it. Hendry doesn't seem to mind givng NTC's. soriano's production would be nice in CF. Unless his agent has misread the market, I doubt he ends up taking less than what Washington offered. I wonder if this deal was a straight up 5 years or if the team held options that Soriano balked at.

    I'll certainly give him a chance. He's not as low on my totem pole as Baker. Dusty was the exact guy I didn't want them to hire. This time, Lou is just one of many. :D I've always maintained that I agree it's possible to win the Hendry way, I just think it's highly inefficient and Jim makes it harder. It's all going to depend on what players they get anyway.

    Career OPS+ of 115 2006 OPS+ of 132 just surpasses previous career high in 2002. Baseballreference lists most similar batter as ....... Aramis Ramirez. Most similar through age 30 was HoJo. (Ramirez's is Rolen through age 28) I'm not very optimistic about Soriano's chances of coming close to justifying a $14m salary the next 5 years. ****I should add that pessimism is due to his inconsistency to date (and age). As a reference, Carlos Beltran's 2005 was as bad of a down year as Soriano's 2004, but Carlos rebounded in 2006 (153 OPS+) with a phenomenal year that Soriano hasn't approached. Soriano's rebound off the down year was a 110, a nice number, but clearly not a superstar. And while Beltran is 29, Soriano is turning 31 soon, so the likelihood of him ever being as good as Beltran was this year, is pretty low. But, if you're getting a 115-120 OPS+ out of CF the next few years, that's going to really help, especially when compared with Pierre's 84.

    I would think it would mean that he wants more money and/or to play somewhere other than Washington, a low exposure team with limited endorsement options. The initial reason for wanting to play 2B was 2B get a premium over corner OF for similar production. If he's already getting the money, there's really no justification for insisting on playing 2B. Other than his ego. But I think money and location (thus, potential for more money) probably plays a bigger role.

    Yeah, Cabrera is already as good as ARod, and there is likely to get better soon. If the Yanks trade ARod and get Cabrera, that's genius. If they get Cabrera and Willis, that's outright thievery.

    Dusty Baker as Cubs manager wasn't working, and you're complaining about him being gone. That doesn't sound like somebody who is ready to move on. I think that's what he's saying.

    So they aren't going to trade him, what about possibly moving to center? If they are looking at Carlos Lee, they have to either be thinking of Jones in center or benching/trading Murton.
