  1. I find it funny that people think Jacque having a near career year negates the negatives in his contract. Jacque is a mediocre ballplayer. Just because he had nearly the best season of his mediocre career doesn't change that fact. Plus, it's a 3 year contract. Having one good season doesn't make up for the remaining two. The Greg Maddux contract was not good just because he put up a good first year for just $6m in 2004. It was bad becasue they paid him $18m for two mediocre years in 2005 and 2006.
  2. I would hope that is true. But, why can't he negotiate 2 deals at once? He's known about the Ramirez situation for a couple years, and knew it was coming to a head during the second half of the season. Likewise, he should have known he would need to replace Baker by July (I'd argue much earlier) and Lou has been a free agent that whole time. Why did he need to wait so long to hire a free agent manager? Plus, this just reinforces the notion that he puts more stock in the manager than the players. People talk of this as Hendry's most important move. But it's not, it's not even close. The player acquisitions are far more important.
  3. Some may be placated by an angry manager who "won't accept losing", but Piniella staging implosions isn't going to ease the anger caused by more losing.
  4. Tickets are not sold based on managerial hires.
  5. And the level of whining about crying on this board is just as bad. I don't really care about proven managers. I don't care about proven veterans. I want productive players. If it took Hendry 4 months to hire Lou Piniella to be the manager (not to mention 4 years to determine Baker was a mistake), I can't have much confidence in Hendry's ability to get the right players. I much more worried about the level of attention Hendry seems to be paying to who will manage this team, which I believe will be inverse to the level of effort he will put into putting better players on the field. To top it off, hiring Lou is a sign that Hendry doesn't think there was anything wrong with his old plan. If he doesn't realize there was a problem with relying on a big name manager to make a positive difference, is there really any hope that he realizes having overaggressive hitters who refused to walk and pitchers who couldn't throw strikes is a problem?
  6. All just part of Hendry's misguided assumption that a big name manager can make the team better. Hendry has no plan or he's being told what to do. If this does happen I have to hope I'm pleasently surprised. If he's being told what to do, I have to assume he'd be hiring Girardi. After how hot and heavy he was for Baker, Lou is just too perfect a fit to be his next passion. Similar to Baker on the field, but a big enough change in the clubhouse to justify the move.
  7. Billboard ads and money from the influx of Japanese tourists to the ballpark. And possibly broadcasting games in Japan, no?
  8. All just part of Hendry's misguided assumption that a big name manager can make the team better.
  9. Do you think a team loses 90 games on accident? It's a series of moves. Hendry re-upped Alfonseca with a big raise when it was unwarrented and unnecessary. He brought in guys like Macias, Perez, Rusch and Estes who all sucked and received way to much playing time. He's overpaid for mediocrity repeatedly, and avoided the opportunity to acquire difference makers, unless those players came with an asterisk (like the banged up Nomar, or the getting dumped by a payroll slasher Ramirez and Lee). He focused on the bullpen last year when the lineup and rotation were huge question marks, then he filled in the lineup and rotation with mediocre players like Jacque Jones and an injured Wade Miller. The Cubs have lost a ton of games with Hendry. That doesn't happen if all but 2 of your moves are good.
  10. It's the 2nd time in a row that Hendry has gone with that option. Why he thinks he must do that with the manager, but then avoid guys like Carlos Beltran is beyond me. FWIW, Torre was actually not much of a name when they hired him. He was a failed journeyman manager, perhaps most comparable currently to Buck Showalter (without the control freak controversy). Torre (and Cashman) were example of the Yankees going away from the big name.
  11. I agree it's a pointless trade. However, both players are signed through 2007 only.
  12. I miss when Baseball Tonight was "have to see" I don't know if it was becasue I was young and stupid, or if the show's really gotten that much worse, but man I loved that show when I was younger. It used to be a baseball highlight show. Then it bacame a "rail against stats, talk about clutch/intangible/hustle, all style and no substance" show.
  13. Make the goals bigger, or make them smaller and take away the gaolie. (10 points to anybody that knows where that's from) Does it have anything to do with the Blackhawks?
  14. Drinking this early on friday=not good:) Not good, ggggggggreat! :pint:
  15. Who says you can't have a great pitching staff, or a staff that gets hot, just because you've got a lot of all stars in the lineup? What is with this black and white world where everybody thinks it's either hitting or pitching. You need both. The Mets would be up a creek without their lineup. The Yankees lost because they spent millions on really old and/or broken down pitchers. It was very similar to the Cubs relying on already injured pitchers.
  16. Charlie Weis is in studio with Mike and the Mad Dog right now, going over this week's games. He's like the anti-Belichek with all his media time. Guess you have to with recruiting. Whoa, good timing, he's talking about Smardoiuoewihtklnaza right now. Thinks he's a faster Ed Mcaffery, and that's not because he's tall and white.
  17. Seriously, the Blackhawks are 2-1, they deserve their own thread. I'm not kidding. :D
  18. MLS is not the first incarnation of pro soccer in the US. We've heard since the 70's that it was bound to take over.
  19. Goony, you have stated a few times that Schmidt is a risk, particularly for injury. Why do you think so? He has averaged 30.5 starts per year over the last 4 years, with 204.5 innings per year during that span as well. He's averaged a decent clip. But he's missed starts in 3 of his 5 SF seasons, he missed most of 2000 and a chunk of '01. Plus, while I don't have documenation, I feel as though I read about elbow or shoulder questions with Schmidt every season. His down 2005 was a red flag for me.
  20. Bottom line is not necessarily the primary focus of an organization looking to sell. Revenues are what draw interest from most prospective buyers.
  21. No interest in Sheffield. I'd lean toward pitching first, but the "when healthy" claim for the offense being mediocre gives the same out clause for the pitchers, who would be great when healthy. I don't like to assume health. Build to withstand setbacks. One more Barrett level bat, at a position that sucked last year, CF, 2B, SS, could make them good offensively. But they also have to avoid the nooses around the neck like Izturis.
  22. That basically summed up all my fears about Piniela. Why baseball people are so much more comfortable with bad veterans than potentially good kids is beyond me. Is it a general distrust of whippersnappers?
  23. That article was cold as ice... Too willing to sacrifice?
  24. FYI, as of right now, the Hawks are "in the playoffs", with 4 points, but with only 3 games played. Martin Havlet leads the league in scoring (tied with Jagr, but in 1 fewer game) with 8 pts. Handzus is in the picture with 6. The Blackhawks have scored the most goals in the league, and have given up more than 20 others. They play @ STL Saturday, and Boucher is supposed to get the start.
  25. Wirtz should be a "baseball man" with his stuck in the 50's thought process.
