  1. I don't get the people who thought it would be a good idea to sit Rex for a series or two. What would be the point. This isn't college football. (Man, I sound like these announcers) You don't treat pros like that. You bench pros and you really run the risk of losing them, and you guarantee that fans will start up an even bigger QB controversy. Why can't people understand bad games happen and that Rex still does not have 16 starts as a pro? My lord. It's Rich Hill all over again.
  2. The letter was insinuating that anti-Rex people have used many thinly veiled, or not so thinly veiled, homophobic and anti-semitic comments when justifying their Rex bashing and talking about the host, Bernstein. And apparantly there's a pretty big Maury Povich watching audience tie-in with the Score, as there have been two commercials for a company playing on the fear that you might not be your baby's daddy.
  3. And I was just pointing out that the Cubs do hit righties relatively well (compared to how they hit lefties). The Cubs have multiple guys with an OPS over 800 and a couple over 900 against RHP.
  4. Care to elaborate? I just turned it on and caught the last minute of the Angelo talk They were talking about how stupid it is to hate Rex right now. They are picking on the "mouth breathers" that want him replaced. A listener wrote a long letter comparing those people who are bashing Rex to Sox fans who have to talk tough and think the new Bears offense is too northside and wimpy, etc. There were references to homophobes, as well as anti-semitism. I don't know who these announcers are, but I'm guessing one is Bernstein. They basically agreed with the guy, and have talked about how foolish many Chicagoans are when they are so caught up in having a "tough" reputation. From the sound of it, somebody opened an earlier show with a long rant against Grossman and passing in general. And these guys think it was really dumb.
  5. Just started listening to WSCR online, and there has been some interesting talk about all the Rex bashing in Chicago, and why that is happening.
  6. I don't believe in "too right handed". I think too many managers get caught up in L/R lineups, instead of the best hitters. Besides, the Cubs are actually middle of the pack in the NL for OPS against righties, and at the bottom against lefties. I guess the point I made that I bolded didn't count, eh? What do you mean not count? I just don't think "too right handed" is a problem, even if Burrell replaces Jones. The Cubs problem is they don't hit lefties.
  7. I don't doubt that baseball people respect Larry. In fact, I know they do, since they've said so over and over. My problems is there is no evidence to support it, at least not with the Cubs. I want proof, not opinion. Larry's pitchers have stunk under Larry.
  8. southwest coast bias man.
  9. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/tom_verducci/10/18/piniella.cubs/index.html Wow, it's finally hit the mainstream press.
  10. Surgery? Time to move on. Good thing they drafted DB's, but they are going to need more.
  11. Is it really a matter of people giving Rothschild flak for the towel drill, or people just being frustrated that Prior spent more time doing that than anything else? I never got the impression that people were bashing Larry on this issue. I hold Larry accountable for the results, not the towel drill becoming an issue.
  12. Going back to my question earlier in the thread... The state is named Hawaii and the island is Hawai'i. Are the games all on the big island? None of them are being played on the big island, they are on Oahu. just saw somebody else answered
  13. That is a very interesting one.
  14. But it's got the Cardinals one game away from at least being there, at least the pitchers you hope won't lose part. Great pitching beats great hitting is just an after the fact comment. It's hard to tell, year-in and year-out which group of pitchers will be great, and that's doubly true in the playoffs. I mean Jeff Weaver has shut down some great hitters, and he sucks. Likewise, Kenny Rogers made a career of being the exact oppositive of the proverbial big game pitcher, and all of a sudden he's pitching great in the playoffs. I think the Cubs need to get as many good pitchers as possible. But there's no telling who will be there in the end.
  15. I don't believe in "too right handed". I think too many managers get caught up in L/R lineups, instead of the best hitters. Besides, the Cubs are actually middle of the pack in the NL for OPS against righties, and at the bottom against lefties. Isn't Wrigley better for RH hitters anyways? Or is that what you were saying? I was actually saying the Cubs are worse against lefties than righties, so it wouldn't hurt to replace Jones with Burrell. The righties in Wrigley issue is another topic. I'm not sure if it's true or not. The Cubs really haven't employed any great LH hitters in recent years, so it's hard to say if it's the chicken or the egg. Adam Dunn has been better in Wrigley than all but 2 other stadiums. Although that's just one example of course.
  16. Yea, but he doesn't pitch. Having an All-Star lineup with lousy pitching won't get you too far (see the Yankees). The Yankees got very far. The Mets have as well, with a rag tag collection of pitchers toward the end. Why people seem to think that winning 97 games isn't very far is beyond me. It's makes for great copy when you talk about great pitching shutting down great hitting. But lots of really mediocre, or even crappy, pitchers shut down lineups from time to time. Great pitching didn't help San Diego, Minnesota or the Angels much. This team needs both pitching and hitting.
  17. Zambrano isn't talent? You conveniently make a list of less than stellar pitchers. Congrats. Larry was given more young talent to work with than almost any other PC over the past 5 years. The results have been poor, but you don't seem to mind.
  18. I'm not sure how you correctly judge how much a guy should be picked on. The results speak for themselves, and Larry's results aren't good. The baseball community praises him as good at his job, but there is absolutely no proof. The baseball community also praises guys like Neifi Perez, when there is more than enough proof that he sucks. Baseball is a very easy game to see the results. Larry's results are bad. His apologists don't think he should get blamed. I think everybody involved should take responsibility and be replaced. I'm not much for rewarding failure.
  19. What's not true? Larry has been here 5 years, he came on board with a healthy staff, and with some of the best young talent in the game. The pitching was good, but it's gotten worse and worse, and more and more injured. That is true. He's had more to work with than 80% of the pitching coaches out there.
  20. I feel very comfortable making the assumption that he's past his prime, he'll still have great years, I never said otherwise. 167 OPS+ at 24 164 OPS+ at 25 167 OPS+ at 29 145 OPS+ for his career, and he's been almost right at, or below that number in 3 of the past 4 years. He's probably got another year in him where he'll return to that level, because he's so great. But other guys are already at that level and just getting better, or staying above. I bet he's at 145-155 for most of the next 4 years, he might approach 170 once and might fall below 140 once. And his ability to play SS is still in question after 3 years away. There is a not a strong history of big SS staying at the position into their 30's, let alone leaving and coming back.
  21. I read that they already tabbed Philly @ Indy for that game. Nice. I was a little concerned I'd miss the Bears game if that was at night. I'll be in the air.
  22. Larry has been here 5 years, and the pitching has gotten worse and worse. I don't know what else you need to know. It's not like he inherited injured pitchers, they got hurt while he was here, and the rest sucked.
  23. That's meaningless. He also wanted Neifi Perez. Leyland isn't god. He's failed and made terrible decisions at times. Maybe wanting Larry was one of them.
  24. I don't believe in "too right handed". I think too many managers get caught up in L/R lineups, instead of the best hitters. Besides, the Cubs are actually middle of the pack in the NL for OPS against righties, and at the bottom against lefties.
  25. Their treatment of very good players is really weird. Do that fans hate these guys or just managment? near as I can tell, their fans hate everything. Burrell sucked the year after he signed his big contract, and to them, that is unforgivable. Now, anything he does is meaningless, especially since the team hasn't won much. This is why I predicted the Abreu trade. I thought for a couple years that Burrell and/or Abreu would be dealt, because Philly turns on its stars when the team around them is not good. It's similar to the ARod situation in NY. As a close, but outside observer of the Philly sports scene, it's very easy to see when a player loses the town, and when he becomes must trade material. Philly people hated Abreu for "meaningless" homeruns and being too patient. If the Cubs had a competent GM it was a situation ripe for ripping them off and filling a huge need on the team.
