And Soriano to 1B is a much better option than Colvin to 1B. -
The Phillies can live with Howard's defense because of his offensive production. I understand, which is why I mentioned that Colvin is no Howard. However, what do the Cubs have to lose. If anything else they can figure out if he is ABLE to play first (which shouldn't be too difficult), and if he isn't, what have you lost? The Cubs stand to lose nothing by trying, and stand to gain alot if Colvin can continue to contribute while playing 1B. It's highly unlikely that the Cubs would try something like that, but it would seem logical to try to find a alternative solution for 1B next year when there are very few candidates within our organization or through free agency. Especially if the intent is to find a stud 1B through free agency after 2011 (Fielder, Gonzalez). The Cubs have absolutely no idea if Colvin can even be a 4th OF; how about they allow his role as an OF become more clear before deciding to hand him the reigns at 1B? Hell, to tie it in to what was also brought up, it would make much more sense to move Soriano to 1st and let Colvin play LF.

The Soriano suggestion was something that came up a while ago and was more in terms of how to better deal with his contract as time went on if the Cubs don't have a better option at 1B. The Colvin idea just came up in this thread and is the idea of one absolutely insane individual. Oh, ok. Thanks for the clarification. What is the general consensus on Fonzie at 1st? I, for one, would like to watch it but would hate for it to happen. Eh, it definitely smacks of worst case scenario, but it wouldn't be the worst idea if the Cubs had the opportunity to significantly improve LF and didn't have anyone essential at 1B.

Because it's not Newark. And holy Christ, I don't think "slum" means what you think it means if you're deeming all of Brooklyn to be one. Dude, I lived in Brooklyn and worked in Brooklyn. I know what a slum looks like. I have friends and a brother who live in Brooklyn and have been there quite a few times myself. Most of Brooklyn is nowhere near being a slum. If that's a slum, then people living in actual slums are actually living on some kind of other-dimensional plane of Hell.

No one is saying he's incapable of learning the position. It's just probably not the wisest thing in the world for a player in his first major league season to REGULARLY play a position he's never played as a professional. He's already having to adjust to major league pitching. And while he's hitting well for now, he's bound to have a slump. When that happens, I'd prefer if his focus wasn't divided between his offensive struggles and learning a new position, regardless of how easy said position may be. If the club had any ideas of making him into a first baseman, they would most likely do so during the offseason. This I can live with...All I am saying is this team is going nowhere this year, jerking him in and out of the lineup divides his focus more than going to 1st would...IMO. How is he being "jerked in and out of the lineup?" How is he not? Because he's just getting starts when the regular starters are getting a day off. Or when they've had DH flexibility. Or he comes in as a PH or a defensive replacement. You know, the things baseball players do. How is this him being "jerked in and out of the lineup?"

I'm glad he cares. I'm not glad that he's bad at baseball, though. I'm sorry, haven't you heard? The problem is that this team just doesn't care. If they cared more they'd be 154-6.

Also, not that I care much about basketball, but what does moving to Brooklyn have to do with anything? Brooklyn ain't Manhattan and it never will be. There are trendy areas but it's mostly a crime riddled slum like the Bronx. Because one option is Newark and the other is Brooklyn. That's a pretty gigantic difference in terms of the team's identity.

Wait, what? Colvin is a first baseman now? And you talk about him like he's some awesome offensive player, but he can't face lefties and shouldn't be hitting at the top of the order? He has played it in the past Mr. Know it all, not to mention last I checked my late grandmother could learn to play an adequate 1st base in a month or 2...gimme a [expletive] break joker. Compared to Lee he IS an offensive juggernaut right now, left handed and young to boot. Plate discipline has been his biggest ? so lets bat him leadoff...lol not to mention the already stated HR's per ab on a team that can't score... as dumb as Piniella ? Or simply like to argue?? Only when someone drops several incredibly stupid ideas in a row, and you just wowed us with some real winners. If you're so confident he can hit why can't he hit first in the lineup? Why do you just completely ignore a player's defensive impact vs. their offensive impact? Why do you assume he'd be passable at first, offensively or defensively? What is this history at first of his that you seem to have completely made up?

2004 was a kick in the ass and 2006 stunk, but I swear it's like I have no memory of 2005. I know Lee was amazing, but outside of him being on the cover of ESPN's magazine because of it I've forgotten the entire season.
