  1. Again, we're not talking about a bunch of bizarre things happening here; if it doesn't come together, eh, not surprising. If, say, the scenario we're talking about happens, also not surprising. Oh, my bad; I'll just step back and let you get back to your oh-so-enjoyable percentage predictions as to how likely it is they're going to fail at everything.
  2. Of course it's realistic that a bunch of things that could easily happen to make the Cubs competitive next season happen.
  3. Yeah, same here.
  4. There's a bunch of things that could happen for the Cubs to be competitive next year, so trying to pin it down to a single scenario as THE way is pretty much fruitless.
  5. It's a redundant worry; basically all you're ever looking at is a bunch of "if's." God, this is a stupid tangent.
  6. Not unusual, no, but the events are about players continuing to improve and not getting injured, plus signing a huge free agent. It is kind of rare to have all the guys you need to keep getting better and stay healthy, actually get better and stay healthy. What is probably more likely is one or more of those guys will get hurt and/or take a step back. Yes, that's baseball; which is why I said the bold part. And really, the only players already on the team he brought up as improving and not getting hurt were Castro and Shark. That's hardly unreasonable.
  7. You wouldn't be surprised if we get Hamels, Jackson and Rizzo are solid MLB players in their first year, shark progresses, and whatever else he had in there? Damn, gimme some of that optimism! Signing a FA? Not unusual. Two highly touted prospects being at least serviceable their rookie seasons? Not unusual. A talented pitcher maintaining or improving on the success of what (ideally) is a breakout year? Not unusual.
  8. But again, we're hardly talking about a series of unusual circumstances. "Too many if's" is a largely meaningless statement in regards to a game with so few sure things. Basically I wouldn't be surprised either way.
  9. There's too many if's in there. Not really. Look at it this way: if most of that happened and they were competitive, would you sit back and say "man, what an improbable and fluke-y season!"?
  10. Uh, dude, Colvin's numbers are awesome, and totally not all similar to the ridiculously slugging-skewed numbers he put up in 2010 and he totally, totally doesn't have 16 k's to 1 walk.
  11. Get back to the hockey thread, Cynosure.
  12. Patience, my pet.
  13. The [expletive]? Why was this bumped?
  14. I thought he shopped at Men's Warehouse? Buy 1, get 8 free! That's JoS A Bank JoS A Bank = my eternal love.
  15. [expletive], Kemp is killing me. I was convinced that the Dodgers' financial woes were going to lead to him hitting the FA market.
  16. Also: http://www.awfulannouncing.com/images/stories/joecowley.jpg
  17. what the hell? When he played, Chris Williams was the only O-lineman that was better that league average on the Bears. I wish I could go back to individual weeks on Football Outsiders to show the numbers up to the week he got hurt. He was actually one of the better players at his position last year. Simply put, he was having a breakout season before he got hurt. Yeah, Theo REALLY needs to change his name.
  18. Yeah, I didn't take it as such; I totally agree with the idea that all it takes is getting into the postseason. I thought it was silly that the guy thought that the Cubs being able to make the playoffs and being able to win the WS were two separate things.
  19. The Cubs could realistically be playoff-competitive next year. Declaring when they'll be "competing for a World Series" like that's an exact science seems like a faulty justification to move a guy they should only trade if they get an amazing haul in return. And he'll be 30 for the 2014 season.
  20. I'm ready to concede on Wood, but I still think Sappelt>Soriano. Talk about damning with faint praise.
