    hjalmarsson signed to a 4 year, 14m offer sheet by san jose. chicago has 7 days to match or accept draft picks as compensation.

    dustin penner didn't sign his offer sheet until august 2nd. i think most GMs would view offer sheets as a backup plan to a backup plan of another backup plan. they would rather acquire their players in a traditional manner especially so they don't seem slimy or backhanded when dealing with other GMs. they would much rather wait until the market shakes out. plus there are other assets to give up in offer sheets as opposed to UFAs. the first rounder the oilers lost in the penner deal? that pick turned into tyler myers. gms horde draft picks like gold, they're going to have to be desperate to give them up.

    i think he meant that ATL was ranked #7 overall, not Vishnevsky.

    it's hard to bury him. he is the second best goalie in the hawks pipeline and niemi isn't someone you can just bank on yet. not that huet is a lock to be anything worthwhile if niemi fails, but crawford is a lock to be pretty awful. at least huet has had extended NHL success, even if he hasn't experienced it with the hawks.

    I love Twitter on days like this. Never thought I'd say that under any circumstance though. McKenzie says Morris at 4 yrs/11m total is close to done in PHX. Dreger says it's done. I don't have a Twitter account but I was thinking today is one of those times I wish I did. But I still won't. I love it for news. I have absolutely no use to post my own updates, but getting news updates on my phone is pretty awesome.

    That seems a little high for him. I like him. Good 3rd line center, leaves them more free to bump up Kesler into a more offensive minded role. PHX close to re-signing Derek Morris per LeBrun.

    pretty sure Niitty is going to get a majority of the starts. I always liked him, but probably just because Antero Niittymaki is a great name. If that's true, I think we just got the #1 seed in the west. EDIT: But yeah, I see it's 2 years, 4M. That's starter money these days. Am I underestimating him? Wouldn't Mason or Ellis be a better option for similar money? Ellis will probably make more than that if I had to guess. Not a huge Mason fan...I think Niitty has serious potential, though. The West is kind of an open book right now. I think Vancouver is probably the best team on paper because they haven't really gone backwards yet, but they obviously have huge issues. I would expect the Sharks to pursue Hamhuis heavily now. Need someone to replace Blake and have cash to spare with Nabby gone.

    pretty sure Niitty is going to get a majority of the starts. I always liked him, but probably just because Antero Niittymaki is a great name. So many good names in hockey. During the playoffs my wife was greatly amused that someone was named Vlasic, and even more amused when they said his nickname was Pickles. I always gave Aki Berg a free pass because his name is just perfect for hockey.

    O'Donnell to PHI done deal. Not a bad 6th defenseman but he's definitely a few steps behind at this point in his career.

    Michalek to Pittsburgh...would assume that this would be followed by Martin to LA if that report was true. We'll see.

    Martin St. Louis apparently signed a 4 year extension with TBL. Haven't heard final confirmation on Martin yet...just that both parties were interested in each other. I assume that's what you were talking about. Pierre LeBrun reports that Ellis is close to signing with a team that IS NOT Montreal. Not sure what team. eta: LeBrun also says that LA is in the mix with PIT on Martin. So definitely not a done deal to PIT yet.

    definitely. there has been a lot of talk about a strong market for goalies, but i like literally none of the goalies on the market. i think ellis is the best goalie available and he's mediocre. still not sure that leighton is the right choice though.

    yeah i really don't like the leighton deal. biron is a better goaltender and he's making less. i don't think they have the wrong idea in not going after a big goalie given the market, but i don't think michael leighton is the right guy to commit to.
