  1. After he was fired, the speculation was that the owner basically controlled the decisionmaking. Still makes it hard to justify the Damon and Beltran trades though. Beltran trade made sense. Astros got a few great months out of him, than he signed on with the Mets at a price that the Royals never could have come close to. Part of the reason why its tough to judge a small market GM. Unless you pumping out a bunch of stud prospects as the Royals are doing now, its not east to put a competitve team together. Who knows how a guy like him or Beane would do with significantly more money at their disposal than they have had in the past. Pretty sure he was talking about the poor returns for Beltran and Damon. The Beltran was especially Hendry-esque IIRC, in that he was determined to get a 3B and a catcher back, limiting what the return could be. The Damon one was I dunno, Dave Littlefield-esque? in that he took back a 36 year old Roberto Hernandez for no apparent reason (Resulting in the trade not even clearing only 1M in salary) and threw in Mark Ellis for good measure. Here's from a Royals blog:

  3. As a team, they drew 12 walks yesterday. Is that normal in this league?
  4. Well it would ultimately depend on the exact deal, but no. But thats because Carmelo is not the guy people claimed he is. Overrated. Maybe a little. But a second scorer alongside Rose sure would've looked good against Miami. Sure but Bosh and LeBron torching us without Noah and Deng in there would have looked not as good. So we lose 4 "105-98" games instead of 4 "88-82" games. It's not as if Noah was exactly shutting people down in the playoffs. He was terrible for most of that series.
  5. Agreed, but it is far from a dump IMO. From the player's perspective, it's a dump
  6. Ha and Jackson. My guess is once Jackson gets going, he'll move up to AAA, followed by Ha to AA and Szczur to Daytona.
  7. There was some story about a guy who turned down $1M+ and is now working at Costco changing tires. Moron. Wonder what Matt Harrington is up to these days.
  8. I like it but don't love it. Of course, snagging a few HS guys and bribing them away from college (a la McNutt) could change the looks of that considerably. Guys like Wells and McNutt were taken pretty late, so I don't think it's too late for Wilken to add some good pitching tomorrow. Wells wasn't late. Struck and Beeler, along with McNutt, have been our key late round over-slots from the last few years that are doing well in the minors right now. I think he's referring to Randy Wells who went in the 38th round. No, I actually meant Ben Wells. I always get him and Struck mixed up.

  10. Why is that? We don't do it very often, and by all accounts, he was the best remaining hitter as far as upside is concerned. And of course, the jury is still out on Vitters. They have a terrible track record of developing these players, and that's largely due to the fact that a) the guys they draft have no concept of the strikezone and b) the Cubs don't teach it once they draft him. I don't know much about Baez's approach, but if he's a toolsy free swinger, it's hard to have hope for him in this organization.
  11. Agreed. Is their anything about his plate discipline?
  12. Vitters 2.0? Vitters didn't have contact issues. Vitters has issues because he frequently makes such great contact I wouldn't call it great
  13. If Rendon doesn't go at 2, is there any chance he falls to 9? I guess my hope is that teams that haven't scouted him extensively will be turned off my medical reports they haven't studied carefully.
  14. I really doubt Lawrie would be made available. Chisenhall is a bit more likely, but not terribly so... we could probably pry away Kipnis though. Are these posts sarcasm? We're not getting near anyone's top prospects for Z.
  15. Law now has the Nats taking Starling. I hope they do.
  16. It's interesting that injuries can be used as an excuse for the Twins, but not the Cubs. The Twins won 94 games last year. We won 75.
  17. Oxford, OH? Go to Miami? Alumni? I graduated in 2006 His slider clearly wasn't doing anything last night. I think it's possible he's trying to focus on his control a bit more so purposely taking something off his pitches. His BB/9 rate is down 1 from last year and almost 2 from two years ago. Or maybe he's elbow/shoulder is boned and he needs surgery. Alumni, graduated in '06 as well. Just haven't changed my profile since.
  18. Given his arm action, it's not surprising he'd eventually get hurt. This year seems as good as any to get the TJS out of the way.
  19. He wouldn't be my first choice, but I'd hardly call him crappy. He's kept the White Sox competitive pretty much every year, and he's good at identifying under-utilized players from other organizations.
  20. If that's the case, why not just Kenny Williams?
  21. I don't think that would be a terrible pick, but I have questions about how good Starling will really end up being.
  22. I don't think the Nationals are trading Bryce Harper He said one of the best, not the best. Read that too fast
  23. I don't think the Nationals are trading Bryce Harper
  24. Was he even on the radar before this year, and is he an actual prospect or one of those guys who will be mashing away at Iowa or some other teams AAA affiliate well into his late 20s? He was a 25th round pick out of college, so he wasn't necessarily on the radar. It's interesting how well he's doing at home, given that Daytona isn't traditionally a hitter's park.
