  1. I kinda would like it if we just didn't have an anointed closer. While good in theory, it doesn't seem to work in practice. Bullpen guys seem to like having defined roles. I'd go with Rondon if I were Renteria. Still leaves (probably) our best reliever in the high-leverage role.
  2. He's either going to hit a walk-off or strike out. There will be nothing in between.
  3. 20% of their in-strike-zone calls have been balls. That's crazy. There's no way that's entirely about framing. Agreed. Part of that must be due to the wildness of Cubs pitchers. Guys like Veras and Strop won't be getting any favors from umpires.
  4. Isn't that how most of these guys base their rankings at this point? Hell, Law will watch a guy once and use that as the basis of his opinion for 2-3 years.
  5. Yeah Parks said he would put Tseng in the Cubs top ten. Law had basically nothing good to say (surprise, surprise).
  6. Other than the renovation delays, I don't see why anything else would be a surprise to the front office. It was all in place when they took over.
  7. In the bullpen by the end of the year. Yep.
  8. Three offseasons, a mid-level payroll. If that's not enough to get Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer past an 80-win cap, then are they really all that good? They had to shave quite a bit of payroll to get to that mid-level payroll figure. It's not as if they've had a ton of money to spend.
  9. So we're conceding this game by bringing in Grimm?
  10. Yeah, if you look at the BB% for the team last year, there's a pretty clear distinction between the Epstein and pre-Epstein guys. Valbuena: 13.6% Rizzo: 11% Borbon (not sure if I should count him): 10.3 DeJesus: 9.1% Navarro: 8.6% Sweeney: 8% Castillo: 7.9% Barney: 6.5% Schierholz: 5.8% Lake: 5.1% Castro: 4.3% Soriano: 3.9%
  11. Kolek is the one who has hit 100 (though there are unconfirmed reports than Grant Holmes has too). There are way more than that. Off the top of my head, Gerrit Cole, Lucas Giolito (was a top 10 talent), Dylan Bundy hit 100 in HS, Mark Rogers of the Brewers. And the latter three have all had surgery. Colt Griffin
  12. I feel like my dream job passed me by. I left out the part where the source said they had to let the guy go, so count your blessings. I bet it was that Wasserstrom guy.
  13. So it only took Sandberg a few weeks to drive out Jimmy Rollins. He'll always be one of my favorite players, but I'm really glad we stayed away from him as manager.
  14. The pen is really shaping up to be strong. Let's hope they don't get over-worked too early. I'm much more optimistic about this team than I was this winter. I think they will struggle mightily to score runs, but I think they will be in most ball games. The starting pitching is awfully blah, and the offense is a serious challenger for the worst in the league. I want to believe, but it's hard. If Rizzo and Castro can bounce back (I can't see them being any worse), the offense looks much different. I'm also a fan of Ruggiano.
  15. Pretty impressive from my untrained eye.
  16. I love Peanut, but there's no way he was more important than Urlacher to that defense, nor was he better than Urlacher. It seems like a few meatball comments since retirement have really skewed the view on Urlacher's career. He was awesome.
  17. That was absolutely crushed.
  18. I've never seen anyone classify Villanueva as a .300 hitter. I would have to think a GG third baseman with a plus hit tool and at least average power is a top 30 prospect in the game.
  19. Does Vitters count? Because apparently Wilken wanted Wieters. Plus there's Colvin and Simpson. Vitters got slot. Yeah, I know, but I guess it all depends on what you define as "cheap." Given the Cubs' resources, I think prohibiting anything overslot at the time would have been pretty cheap. Regardless, I don't think it matters much as I don't think the Hendry regime had the ability to consistently develop major league hitters.

  21. Agreed. Without looking at any numbers, he seemed to let a lot of first pitch strikes go by, putting him in a hole and causing him to swing at anything near the zone after that.
  22. His stance kinda reminds me of Murton's Yeah, I had no idea his knees were bent so much. I pictured his stance to be like Richie Sexson or someone else similarly tall.
  23. What event happened over the last day or two that provoked you to make that comment? Just curious because thats been pretty obvious for awhile now. Regardless of how they finish this year, they'll be getting a top 5 talent (Mirotic), a ton of cap space, and potentially old Rose back. They're in better shape than most non-contenders.

  25. I hope he takes out one of those ballhawks on Waveland when he gets to Wrigley.
