  1. This has to frustrate the heck out of Cub fan. Shoot........ I'm frustrated about it, and I'm a Cardinals fan. I like watching Prior pitch. It's a shame that he's not.
  2. Nope. You're right. The Cards are screwed. History has proved it.
  3. It's hard to say that, right now. He's not quite 25 years old yet, and he's shown steady progress in his minor league career. If he was an average defensive outfielder right now (something he's never worked on), he'd probably be headed for a spot on the 25-man roster right now. If he impresses offensively at Memphis, and if he can learn to play an adequate outfield, then he's got a chance. It's not a GREAT chance, but it's a chance, nontheless. He's certainly not going to be worse than So Taguchi or John Rodriguez, offensively. Say something negative about the Cardinals. Once. They screwed up by signing Tino Martinez, and I'm still not thrilled about the Mulder trade. That's two.
  4. You can only hope. It's been many years since a Cardinal starter has wasted 10 or 15 starts, and it won't happen this year, either. How quickly we forget. :D Forget what? You think the Cards had better options than Stephenson that year? Well, I was just pointing out that Stephenson quite effectively wasted 10-15 starts in 2003. "Wasted" means that the Cards had better options, and didn't use them. Keep this thing in context, please.
  5. He was actually better in 04 than in 05. He never will be, Chris had trouble handling 1st. Well OK, freaky things happen. I wouldn't be so sure of that. Chris Duncan is not good. His 2004 numbers were slightly better than his 2005 numbers, but he was playing at a higher level (AAA, as opposed to AA). He handled the transition well. I don't know if he'll be an adequate outfielder. I have my doubts as well, which is why I included the big "if's". What's not good about Duncan, besides his defense?
  6. Oh, I don't think anybody is proclaiming Duncan as the next Adam Dunn. But a Luke Scott comparison is equally as arbitrary. Luke Scott was a 45th round draft selectioin, while Duncan was a 1st round selection. Furthermore, Luke Scott was 25 years old before he made it past Class A. Duncan is playing solid Triple A ball at the same age.
  7. It's not really fair to compare Ankiel to anybody, because nobody has the slightest idea what he can do. Duncan will probably never be as good defensively as Ankiel.

  11. Today: Ponson: 4IP / 2 hits / 1 ER / 0 BB's / 0 K's
  12. What about Gwynn? Why not? Is there any proof that he wasn't using steroids? Because that seems to be the standard set for McGwire & Sosa........... Prove that you weren't, or you're out.
  13. As opposed to the era ewhere the mound was higher, as opposed to the cocaine era, as opposed to the era where guys used spitballs and scuffed the ball.... ..... and the eras when some of the best players in the world (blacks, hispanics, etc.) weren't allowed into the game, and the amphetamine era......etc. etc. etc......
  14. Innocent until proven guilty is for the courts of law. In the court of public opinion, it's not a justified standard. There's nothing wrong with the masses collectively coming to a general conclusion after seeing a set of what may be considered circumstantial evidence. The courts found OJ innocent, that doesn't mean we all have to pretend he is. I don't see how any of this is "just going after Barry". MLB has clearly "gone after" others. And it seems pretty obvious they will continue to go after others. The fact is there is more evidence surrounding the Barry Bonds situation than there is just about any other player. That's only because there's been more digging. Dig into every players matters as much as Bonds' have been dug into, and I'll bet you'd find a reason to keep A LOT of players out of the HOF.
  15. The voters can vote for or not for anyone, and don't have to explain why. If they don't want to elect Bonds, Sosa or McGwire, they don't have to, even if it is just because of their suspicion. Unfortunately not everything is clear cut, and this book probably did cost Bonds a shot at the hall, for right or wrong. You're right..........the voters "can" vote for whomever they want to. They tend to be swayed by public opinion, however......... and there are probably enough "public idiots" to keep Sosa, McGwire, and Bonds out of the HOF. That's a shame. In my opinion, it's more of a HOF sham to keep these guys out than it would be to put them in, based on what we know (and don't know).
  16. Or...... it doesn't mean anything, other than the fact that he's trying to add to his arsenal. Or it could be his excuse why he got lit up by a split squad of Marlins who already don't have much fire power. Yup. Season's over for the Cards, clearly. nice inference. obviously he meant that because reyes got destroyed by the marlins' split squad, the cardinals' season is over. It was sarcasm. As if it means ANYTHING that Reyes had a bad spring outing against ANYBODY.
  17. Clemens is an attention monger. Aren't these pretty much the same things he was saying a couple of years ago? He just wants to hear people begging him to come back, so he's playing his annual "retirement" game. I agree with an earlier poster......... BORING.

  19. Link. This quote from the same article gives us more insight into the minds of the voters. And from Bill Platche: Sounds like Rosenthal is the closest to the target. Either judge them ALL, or don't judge any of them. This "picking and choosing" that Plaschke is doing shows alot of ignorance.
  20. Or...... it doesn't mean anything, other than the fact that he's trying to add to his arsenal.
  21. Yeah except for the whole point when Canseco was the source, informant, and some guy in his book. Wasn't it about this time last year that all the McGwire and Palmeiro supporters were dismissing Canseco's allegations as not credible? With Palemiro's positive test and McGwire's weak "testimony" at the hearings, even the most fervent Canseco haters must admit that Canseco's allegations have credibility. I think that everybody has their own agenda, and will believe what they want to, when they want to believe it. If it's convenient to believe Canseco, then people find reasons to believe him. If it doesn't fit their agenda, then they find reasons NOT to believe him. It goes both ways. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, and something that we'll probably never know. McGwire is retired and enjoying his life. He doesn't care, at this point.
  22. I never said it's just about Mac. I think that he's treating Bonds & Sosa unfairly, also. (although Sosa got CAUGHT cheating, so his integrity is pretty much toast). i think part of the idea of this thread was that mcgwire's integrity was toast (because of his performance at the congressional hearing), so if all we have to do is say someone has been dishonest in the past in order to declare that they took steroids, i guess mcgwire is dead to rights. seems like an awfully low standard of proof to me, though. There's more to the questioning of his integrity than just his performance at the hearing or Canseco's eyewitness accounts. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/story/289500p-247837c.html An "source" says that an "informant" says that "some guy" says that McGwire might have used something. You're right..... there's MUCH more to it than I originally thought. Good grief.
  23. Gay jokes and fat jokes, all on one page. How clever and original.
  24. It's not based on "career" in my opinion. It's based on who you'd want as your first baseman RIGHT NOW. Given the choice of picking Lee or Pujols, I think everybody outside of Chicago would take Pujols. Heck, even if you base it on last season, you'd probably want Pujols (based on Win Shares). No, if you base it on last season, I'd want Lee who was better offensively and defensively. Pujols actually had slightly higher Win Shares, which takes defense into account. You can use other measures that favor Lee, but there was no clear-cut favorite, in my opinion. Such as H, 2B, HR, BA, SLG, OPS for hitting and F%, assists and Zone Rating for fielding... All of which are figured into the Win Shares stat that I've already mentioned.
