That's true. The .306 OBP with an average of .293 tells me the guy never takes a walk, which limits his effectiveness. I'm beating my head against the wall cause Macias didn't take a walk. 4-3 is better than 5-3. The guys a bench player who can play a bunch of positions. You want to bring back DuBois, who has a lower obp and can't play any positions? Yeah, Dubois will be a career sub-.300 OBP guy. He's a better offensive player than Macias by a fair margin even with his struggles, if that's what you're asking. How's he doing w/ Cleveland? 2005 OPS Macias -- .659 Cubois -- .766 Next question, please. Does the NL have a DH? No, but the NL does have PH's. According to ESPN, it's .667 compared to Macias' .502. (Regardless, I don't think 12 AB's as a rookie really shows much of anything)

You a doctor? What's the point of this comment. It is well known that Kerry is going to need surgery this offseason. Are you just trying to get under his skin because he is a Cards fan? You don't think Hendry's has consulted w/ doctor's?? Some of the nitpicking of the Cub organization and incessant griping is amazing here. Yep, the Cubs are above questioning. Because this franchise always puts a winning product on the field and never has any problems with arm injuries to pitchers. Seriously, the Cub organization deserves nitpicking, especially when it comes to the young pitchers that are getting injured left and right (arms).

No doubt. It's the reason a lot of people are paranoid or overly-protective of using him when surgery is imminent. As Cub fans, we all want to see a healthy Wood.

Isn't Wood only supposed to throw one inning at a time? I realize he didn't throw many pitches in the 7th, but this is exactly why Wood shouldn't be pitching. Dusty Baker absolutely cannot be trusted with pitchers.

Me neither. You know what I cant believe? If you're not out of the race, why give up?... If he can pitch, why shut him down? If it isnt going to cause any harm to him, then you might as well use him. BTW, they skipped The Stretch on ESPN!?!?! That's a tough one. It's a fine line as to who's in the race and who isn't. Is every team mathematically alive still in it? I'd say no. At some point, logic has to enter into it. Yeah, he can pitch. Obviously, he can pitch quite well -- he's been nasty. But do the doctor's actually know it isn't going to cause harm? It can't help, can it? Seems to me all pitching could do is cause harm. It's ESPN, what do you expect?

11M is only a few million more than elite closers are paid. It would suck to overpay for a closer, but it's preferrable to putting Wood in the rotation and having him land right back on DL again. People, including myself, are going to speculate about this stuff. That's what message boards are for. Except Kerry Wood is not an elite closer. He's not even a closer. And you still want to pay him "a few million more" than an elite closer? It's more of a risk having him close than putting him back in the rotation, in my opinion. The only reason Wood is not an elite closer is because he hasn't been one yet. If he is moved to closer -- and I'm not saying he should be, he's more valuable as a starter -- he'll immediately be an elite one. -
Switch Lawton over to RF and put Murton in LF and then we'd have the best possible lineup. But this one isn't bad either. You're right of course. I was conceding that probably will never happen under Dusty, though. Edit: Stupid Rain.

Tim: agreed; my point was only that based on his argument - that the Yankee way (which he appeared to associate with excessive spending and building from "without") "is not the way to go" is contradicted by the fact that the Yanks are winding down a fabulously succesful dynasty, and our last dynasty took place about 100 years ago. I agree that the the truly dominant Yankee teams were built around their self-made core: Jeter, Pettite, Rivera, Posada and Bernie. Note that these guys basically represent a Noah's Ark of baseball: one player from each general position (IF, SP, RP, C, OF). The problem the Cubs seem to be having is identifying who their core ,will be. My two cents: SP: Prior C: Barrett RP: Wood (if he remains a reliever; if not, like The Waterboy, "the search continues") OF: Pie? Murton? CPatt? Other? IF: Lee and Aram. I'd think the Cubs might want to designate that Zambrano guy as a "core" player.

Yep, the end of this lost season is far more important than the rest of Wood's career. especially if he's throwing "wicked sliders". That's gotta be good for the shoulder. They were certainly "wicked." He looked extremely nasty. Which is the exact reason the Cubs need him to get healthy and return to the rotation. That's my point. If he's still trying to throw that pitch with a "frayed labrum" he's crazy. Just because its only one inning doesn't mean that he can throw whatever he wants out there. You couldn't be more right.

Beyond a doubt the luckiest team in the NL, they're also good. Why can't you guys just give us credit? We've been a great team for over a year and half now. This isn't a flukey ride of luck. I'll give the Cards credit. The luck excuse is pure crap. The Cards are probably the best team in baseball this year and were the second best last year. Last season, I thought they'd lose in the World Series, but I'm more concerned that they'll win it this year. Oh, I don't like the Cards at all, though. I'd root for the White Sox over them in the World Series. If they don't get Rolen, Walker and Sanders back, they're not going to the WS with their present lineup. I agree there, but you just can't help worry about something you dread so much.

I can agree with the "let the kids play next year" mantra. Especially with the free agent class lacking where the Cubs need the most help. Outside of a big trade for a OF, playing youth in the OF may be the wise decision. However, if Pie-Patterson-Murton is the opening day outfield, the team cannot expect to contend. That OF is just not going to cut it next year. Also, I'd prefer far, far more patience with Pie -- no Patterson Part II.
