  1. This is also written by Sullivan, so who knows. So maybe the Cubs might be in the hunt for Burnett. Not thrilled with Morris, and something tells me he might pull a "Steve Kline", so I would stay away from Crybaby Morris. I'm probably in the minority, but I want nothing to do with AJ Burnett. And it has nothing to do with his critical comments of Marlin management. I look at it simply from performance: from Aug. 24 to Sept. 25, he lost all 6 decisions he had, which included a 4 game stretch where he gave up 18 earned runs in 18 innings. I don't want Hendry shelling out big money to a non-big money pitcher. I'd be all over Millwood. In his last 6 starts, he's given up 8 earned runs in his last 40 innings. That's getting it done. A rotation of Zambrano, Prior, Maddux, Wood and Millwood would be amazing with either Jerome Williams or Rich Hill there in case of injury to Wood. No doubt you're in the minority, but, for what it's worth, I agree. Burnett is going to be way overpaid. If the Cubs sign him, it's possible they'll have two Kerry Wood-type situations. Don't get me wrong, I love Wood -- he's probably my favorite Cub -- but it's hard to deny he's been hurt quite a bit. I'd go the safer, though admittedly, less talented route with someone like Millwood.
  2. Yeah, gambling. That's the ticket.
  3. I'm glad labelling and grouping and name-calling isn't permitted. I think you overestimate the average fan. The average fan doesn't take the time to register at an independent website like this one to talk about the Cubs all the time. They're more the type that takes until June to realize that Grudzielanek isn't playing 2nd anymore, and are currently wondering why Wood hasn't started in seemingly forever. Since the regulations of this community that you're referring to are for fellow posters(please correct me if I'm wrong mods/admins), I really doubt that IMB! was trying to group anyone here into that category. Also, I'm pretty sure the mods/admins prefer you contact them in private if you have issue with any problems you have of this nature. Sorry, I didn't know that this board was for only above-average fans. Your point about the posters vs. non-posters is well taken. If a private message is the way to do it fine. I can't imagine average fans make it to this site and post. Heck, I'd consider myself a well above-average fan (whatever that means) and I hardly have time to post here. Why would a mere fair-weather fan take the time to post here?
  4. Probably everyone that matters. The Cubs should pick up Walker's option. Will they? I'm getting less and less confident.
  5. I could care less about what he does off the field. I want to win a WS, not have model citizens and choir boys on my team. If he gets me closer and is a stong piece for a WS Championship, I want him on my team. I would like to see a WS Champion in my lifetime. I'm sick of the losing. Baker's being paid a lot of money for being a players manager. It's time for him to start earning some of that cash. He handled Bonds and Kent griping....he can handle Bradley. I care. While I want the Cubs to win the World Series as much as the next guy, I don't want a team full of felons and wife-beaters to do so.
  6. Complete loss of words. I could understand having Dusty come back next year to finish his contract -- though I'd completely disagree -- but an extension? I never even dreamed that would happen. I figured even if Dusty was back next season, he'd then leave on his own. Seriously, if they give Dusty an extension it will be very difficult for me to even watch games anymore. I can't imagine I'll pay to go to one. I certainly won't put in the same amount of time and emotion that I have recently. It's sad, IU basketball has already alienated me to the point where I hardly care and now the Cubs are about to do the same. At least I have the Colts. OK, so not a complete loss of words.
  7. Boy, are you oversimplifying things. You keep mentioning only one statistic, wins. Why is that? Because, it is the ONLY thing that matters when judging a GM.
  8. And, more than likely, simply turn it into "he doesn't have enough speed to play CF" garbage. He doesn't have enough speed or superb enough OF instincts to make up the difference. He's played like two innings of CF that I know of and I believe that was because the CF left the game and someone had to play there. If he can't, he can't. I didn't mean to imply that I thought he could -- I really have no idea either way. I was just basing it off of erik's quote of "if he can play CF effectively" what the next possible complaint would be. It is too bad if Murton can't handle CF. Even if the Cubs didn't plan on starting him there, it's always nice to have some versatility.

  10. I've been figuring on the Cards in the Series, and probably winning it, the whole season. I've posted as much in this thread and others. However, I'm less certain (ha, certainty in predictions -- what a pompous statement) with Rolen's injury. I still consider the Cards as favorites, but I can now envision them being upset in the NL more easily than before. Are they a better team with Rolen? Sure thing. But Rolen really hasn't played this year, and when he did, he wasn't very good. I agree that a healthy Rolen would make them a better WS team, but they've done pretty darn good so far without him. It's just that I believe that talent/ability/whatever is magnified in the postseason. It might be one thing for a supremely talented team to skate at a position during the regular season (pardon me, though, I have no idea what the Cards are currently getting out of 3B) but that becomes more difficult when the stakes are raised. Anyway, I still expect the Cardinals to go to the World Series. They're probably still the best team in the league. Also, I'm from Southern Indiana and I hate the fact that Jasper-born Rolen is injured. He's so my favorite Cardinal ever -- ha, the only one I've ever liked. It's just that if I was a Cardinal fan I'd be worried this injury costs the best team the best shot at winning the series.
  11. We should probably get Preston Wilson and Chan Ho Park too. Park used to be good, and Walker should have hired Wilson's agent. Cubs: "Holy Crap, Park used to be good? Sign him up!" Not sure what you mean here, but for clarification... Park was good when he signed his deal. I thought it was pretty obvious: the Cubs, historically, have had a tendency to sign once-good players a little too late in their careers.
  12. I agree Barrett has defensive problems, though I'm hopeful he can continue to improve in that regard. His game calling also needs to improve. But a catcher with an .840 OPS can't be one of the Cubs biggest problems.

  14. Yuk. And seconded.

  16. Absolutely. This is a no-brainer.
  17. I'd do it. It's easier to stomach overpaying for three years. A club with the Cubs' resources can spend a little extra on a valuable player like Giles over three years -- it gets more difficult if overpaying for 5-7 years. Giles would be such a great fit for this team, and likely wouldn't be much overpaid until the third year (though, admittedly, I have no idea exactly how to quantify price v. production).
  18. we should get some of those intelligent observer folks to come and run the cubs. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. So, I'll cry instead*. *And, yes, that's a Beatle reference. Oh, keep Walker, too.
  19. 1. Not the Cardinals 2. Not the White Sox 3. A's 4. Indians 5. Braves/Red Sox
  20. Count me among those worried, since it's the Cubs. What a stupid move this would be. Walker's very productive, especially at his price, and the Cubs have no replacement. He should be penciled in next year at 2B. As for Soriano or any other trade, the Cubs have far too many holes to worry about upgrading a position that's already a strength.
  21. You really think Hairston will be back? The current braintrust doesn't seem to like him too much. I'd guess he's gone, regardless of what I'd do. Outside of that, I agree with everything you said and hope the Cubs management does as well. He's under contract for 2006, so unless we deal him, he's ours. Hairston was a super-two, so I believe he's a free agent. I'm not positive how that works though. I don't know either, but I do expect Hairston to be traded if he isn't gone by his own choice via free agency. A super two doesnt enable you to enter free agency sooner, it only allows you to get an extra year of arbi, hes ours. Hairston isnt the problem, Dusty is. You're preaching to the choir, here. However, Dusty seems to get his way more often than not.

  24. Technically speaking, if he's cleared waivers, Hendry can't just claim him per se. If he's cleared waivers, all 29 other teams have a shot at making a deal with the Mariners. He's got 2 player options - $4M in '05 and $4.25M in '06, so any club getting him is on the hook for $8.25M minus whatever a team can get Seattle to pick up. If I'm Seattle, I don't pick up any cash unless I get a stud prospect in return. What trade idea do you have in mind? I know we have a lot of Rule 5 bubble guys...Do you think Seattle would take bulk over 1 stud prospect? If Seattle won't take bulk then pass. No way is Guardado worth even a semi-stud prospect, though I'd take him.
  25. While I don't expect that all to happen, we'd be looking at a pretty darn good team if it did. That's close to exactly what I want to happen. Except, 1) I'd go with Nomar if he comes relatively cheap (though I do like Lugo quite a bit) and 2) if Giles is signed, I'd probably look to go with a Lawton/Murton platoon.
