Minor League Discussion & Boxes 7-22-05
sporrer17 replied to Outshined_One's topic in Cubs Minor League Talk
All 6 of Monty's hits so far in AA have been for extra bases (5 2bs, 1 HR) Good for a .231 AVG, but a .538 SLG. Hopefully he continues to improve his game as he moves through the system. It's not too late for him. -
Minor League Discussion & Boxes 7-22-05

Nomah sighting....wonderful feeling. I assume once he's able to play a full game, he's up to AAA. Then its a matter of a week or so...sooooooooo exciting. -
1. Adam Dunn--40 HR power, .380+ OBP, LH, 25 years old...could be a cornerstone here... 2. Austin Kearns--30 HR power, also great OBP, also 25 years old, a bit faster and better defensively than Dunn. Not as proven as Dunn in the bigs, but tons of talent. 3. Scott Eyre--LH setup man with low ERA, low WHIP. If we acquire a Kearns like LF...that gives us a guy who can stick around for a least another year in LF/RF, give us a spot to develop a younger guy in LF/CF (Murton/Pie) and sign a big name player (if there were any) in one of the spots. I like Kearns probably as much as Dunn, potential wise, because I think Dunn is reaching his peak, because with those K's he'll never hit for a high average.

Okay, I last read this thread at like...what...idk sometime in the early-mid teens...I just read straight from 15-51...I deserve some time here lol. Well the fact that it was mentioned at all on TV/radio/both makes it interesting to me regardless. If Hendry wouldn't do that deal, it's probably because of his faith in CP. I can't say I blame him, I still have faith that CP will turn it around, whether its here or some other organization. Considering that supposedly both clubs have "turned down" the offer and said it's too steep...that could possibly mean they are still discussing a potential deal, and that there's a ways to go before anything gets done (or Dunn...if you'd prefer ;)). Corey is starting to turn it around down in AAA...he's up in the .280's, has 3 HRs, and his OBP looks pretty solid. I know it's small sample size, and against lesser competition, but it's still encouraging nonetheless. Wow, I read all those pages, had so many thoughts on different things, now I am going blank  Oh well. It was a great discussion.

That's cool if you don't think Williamson will be back this season, however, he made a AAA appearance tonight, went an inning, no hits, no walks, 2 Ks.... He'll be back by the end of the month, I'm almost positive. He'd need a week, maybe week and a half to get back to form...that's about it. He'll be here.

Mid-Season Top 10 or 20 prospects list
sporrer17 replied to burnt out cubbie fan's topic in Cubs Minor League Talk
I'd say it's probably a fair assumption that one or both will probably end up well below their potential ceiling...which is sad because both are so talented that they could be great. I can definately see where you're coming from...but I still put Harvey ahead of Patterson just because he's showing some good power, and he's still got tons and tons of untapped talent. -
Mid-Season Top 10 or 20 prospects list
sporrer17 replied to burnt out cubbie fan's topic in Cubs Minor League Talk
I agree, I think the "polished" player is something that we have been sorely lacking (Murton's one...Greenberg) over the past seasons. However, I don't know if Patterson can be labeled as "polished" just quite yet. First off, he's in Low A ball, and he's 22, having played 3 years at a major college program. He still K's 22% of the time, but he does walk 13% of the time as well, which helps a little bit. I've heard some say they question his ability to be anything more than an average defender, but I'll take that. I just don't know if the "polish" that Patterson is showing in Low A ball can make him the #2 prospect over the upside of a Harvey, Dopirak, someone like that. -
Mid-Season Top 10 or 20 prospects list
sporrer17 replied to burnt out cubbie fan's topic in Cubs Minor League Talk
lol, I'm sorry, but this statement just made me laugh. His potential to be an "above average" second baseman (above average 2nd baseman, thats probably a step down from Todd Walker...I consider Walker "good") is what would make him our #2 prospect? Not that I don't like Patterson...and its not that I don't think he could be our #2 prospect...but to base it on his "potential to be above average" is a little odd. Ryan Harvey and Brian Dopirak have potential to be good for their respective positions, as do plenty of others. I don't think potential to be "above average" is cause for tremendous excitement... PS...I think Patterson can be a very good 2b as long as he gets on base at or above .350 consistently...with his speed and decent pop, he'll be a threat. The kid's got his brothers speed, the patience Corey never had, and plays a position of need (2b that can hit well aren't a dime a dozen). Here's to a bright future for EPatt... -
No I fully understand what you're saying. I didn't get that this was meant to be in a situation with men on base already. Either way, I'm all for my #8 hitter (or any hitter for that matter) getting on base in any way he can. You never know what can happen, with just a little luck on your side, your pitcher (especially our starters) could hit a double and score the guy...
-
I'm trying to figure out where you're coming from on this one...and I just can't do it. So you're saying we should have our 8 hitter try to put the ball in play rather than take a walk so the pitcher can make the last out. I guess if you think you have a better chance starting the next inning with a pinch hitter than your leadoff man, it's okay. However, I'd prefer my pitcher to end the inning and go with the leadoff hitter the next inning.
-
See, that's what I'm thinking. Murton as a RH hitter off the bench makes sense...and if he's going to stay here, he's got to get some ABs, and if we somehow managed to acquire Dunn, he wouldn't get any time in LF. Maybe this is why we traded for Gerut. We needed that 4th/5th OF in case we acquire another one, so that Murton can be sent back down. That would leave us with 2 LH hitting backup OFs...and no real RH options off the pine. Maybe they would call up a McClain or Kelton type just to help out the bench...or just stick with what we've got as far as bench help and let Murton sit around all year waiting for ABs...idk
-
Question for you folks...with Burnitz not hitting LH's all that well this year, do we then go with a Burnitz/Murton platoon rather than letting Murton rot on our bench the rest of the year? He's under .240 against LH's... And adding Dunn would allow us to have the luxury of sitting Burnitz and still having LH thunder. Personally, I like the idea of a Burnitz/Murton platoon in RF, or maybe Dunn plays RF and Murton in LF. (against LHs)
-
It would make sense, the Cubs might want to pick him up quickly to bring him along for the weekend set with STL. And if that's all the trade is, where do I sign? I know Dunn is not the greatest hitter ever, nor will he ever be a good contact hitter (IMO)...but still, a 25 year old with his power, his ability to draw a walk, and his SLG percentage=happiness for all Cubdom. Hairston Walker Lee Ramirez Dunn Nomar Burnitz Barrett --------- nilodnayr: that's an awesome possibility (2-8 with .800+ OPS...)
-
I agree...I just can't envision a situation where Patterson returns to this team and is productive again. It's almost like this situation is beyond repair. Also, something about Jerry Hairston rubs the Cubs coaches/management the wrong way. It's too bad, because he's doing exactly what we need from the leadoff hitter. If we go with Gerut, though, it's basically another 6-8 type hitter, so he would really wouldn't do much for our lineup if replacing Hairston. Maybe this works if the Cubs plan on getting Pierre for leadoff...or bringing up Pie to play CF and leadoff (yuck)... Hendry's had good success with trades, especially when it comes to getting positional players. Barrett and Ramirez had their struggles, but had also shown flashes of brilliance. Lee was okay, but not anywhere NEAR the player he is today. All of these moves were questioned at first, and a lot of people were upset we didn't go after someone else (Lowell over Ramirez, Pudge over Barrett). If Hendry wants Gerut as his everyday LF...(or platooning with Murton) I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, for now.

In fact, Blake has been awful this year... He's had ONE respectable (good) month. June: .293/.322/.488, 4 HR 12 RBI (5 to 1 K/BB) in 82 ABs Other than that: April- .188/.253/.333, 3 HR 7 RBI in 69 ABs May- .204/.305/.379, 3 HR 9 RBI in 103 ABs July- .185/.233/.222, 0 HR 1 RBI in 27 ABs I think Dubois was added to be what Casey Blake *could* have been in the Cleveland OF...a RH bat with some pop who can draw a walk (well in the minors Jason can, anyway). They need some RH thunder with all those LHs/SW (Martinez, Broussard, Hafner, Crisp, Sizemore)
-
With Broussard not playing all that well in Cleveland, (and hitting .189 vs LHs) Dubois could see some playing time at 1b, where he has played some in the minors... Or Hafner could get some time at 1b when Dubois DH's... Or Dubois could rot on their bench as well. Also, Casey Blake is WAAAAAAAAY beyond replaceable in the OF. He's almost 32, he's hitting .224 with 10 HRs, and he K's a lot. .979 FPCT in the OF...Dubois' is .980. (I know, hard to judge a guy strictly on FPCT.)
-
Let's look at it this way...they don't want to rush Adam Greenberg back from a potential serious head injury. He was our backup CF. With Hairston playing everyday, Macias is now our 2nd option as CF, then we have choices such as Hollandsworth/Burnitz/Murton...Gerut can at least adequately back up CF. If you look at it this way, he's capable of at least matching Holly's output, IMO...and then you pair him with Murton like we have been with Holly...and it moves Todd back to the bench, leaving the team with either Murton/Hollandsworth, Gerut/Hollandsworth available to pinch hit... It also opens up the possibility of trading a guy like Hollandsworth for a prospect or two (to a team that needs a 4th OF) and spin those guys to maybe Cincy for Dunn or Florida for Pierre... Just food for thought, I guess. Plus, lets face it guys...Dubois couldn't handle OF, especially in Wrigley where the winds can get the best of a guy on any given day. He didn't hold much value to any NL ballclub, so we got a solid major leaguer for him.

Mid-Season Top 10 or 20 prospects list
sporrer17 replied to burnt out cubbie fan's topic in Cubs Minor League Talk
With Guzman failing to really do much of anything the past two seasons, it makes it *REALLY* hard to keep him in a top 10 list during a midseason review. Midseason reviews are probably the hardest evaluations...the guys who are struggling, you dont want to dismiss them because of a half of a season...and those who are doing well you want to move up because you think they've figured it out... Guzman is pretty much an afterthought to any Cubs top 10 list because of his failure to stay healthy the last 2 years. I'm sorry, but take ANYONE basically out of the game for 2 years, bring them back and see if they are still considered as valuable as when they left. When healthy, he's easily a top 5 in our system. But he's not healthy. -
Not too bad...probably not worth it, but not a terribly long ways away.

Glove conditioner, put a baseball in it, and rap rubber bands around it for a day or two...then play catch. Is Pontiac any closer to where you live then Avon? lol...i'd play catch all day... I guess I haven't done this in a while, because my last glove was a Mizuno glove I got at Wal-Mart for 20 bucks that came pre-broken-in, and it is a really good glove...i love it. It needed a little breaking in, but I got it right before baseball practice started one year, and just broke it in with a friend....

Mid-Season Top 10 or 20 prospects list
sporrer17 replied to burnt out cubbie fan's topic in Cubs Minor League Talk
He'd be making significant progress if he were to make our top 20 list. Just a year and a half ago, he was an afterthough when it came to top prospects lists...heck, he wouldn't have made a top 50 list a couple years ago. If he can continue to show improvement in his game, then he may work his way back into being a legit prospect. Until then, however, don't get too excited about him. However, with the tools he has (not the 3rd overall pick for nothing) and maybe some new-found confidence, he could become the hitter we all thought we had at SS, only playing LF...which will diminish his value somewhat. Another thing that hurts his prospect status is his declining SB totals. He at one point was at least at 20 SB guy...now he's got like 5 this year... -
Mid-Season Top 10 or 20 prospects list
sporrer17 replied to burnt out cubbie fan's topic in Cubs Minor League Talk
1. Felix Pie-the tools are amazing 2. Ryan Harvey-tools also are amazing, still needs work. Great arm. 3. Mark Pawelek-high upside, but also is considered very polished. 4. Matt Murton- high BA, high OBP, okay SLG, good speed. I like him. 5. Scott Moore- high upside, high draft pick, finally putting it together. 6. Rich Hill- great curve, okay FB, improving control. Too old, too many HR 7. Eric Patterson- fast, okay d, good top of the order hitter, will take walks. 8. Sean Gallagher- sub 2 ERA, sub 1 WHIP, almost a K/inning...only 19. 9. Sean Marshall- doing very well at AA. If healthy, he could be a lot higher. 10. Ricky Nolasco- lot of K's, undefeated, sub 3 ERA, WHIP=1.20. Looking at my list, I probably have Harvey, Moore, Pawelek, and Nolasco a little high, however, I think they are all having very good seasons, but Harvey could stand to improve his #s a little. I was going a little bit more off of upside than pure production, however I did take both into consideration. -
I guess I've always had my finger sticking out of the hole, and rarely will I ever leave it in...just feels natural, probably because I've done it my whole life. I have smaller gloves (I played 2b/3b/SS) and it feels odd with my finger inside the glove.

Luis Montanez Promoted to West Tennessee
sporrer17 replied to Chris's topic in Cubs Minor League Talk
I would have to think that if maybe, just maybe, he can put together a solid half-season at West Tenn, he may give IF another shot over the winter/next season. He has to realize, even if he duplicates the numbers he put up in Peoria in AA, he's still probably behind at least 4-5 guys as far as OF prospects are concerned. He also has to look at positional depth, and see that if he can handle SS/2b, he has a shot to be a major leaguer with his type of bat. Maybe even CF...but corner OF, iffy. I would think as a 3rd overall pick, he's obviously got the tools to stick at SS, and that just makes me think he needs to give it some more time. In my view, his positional switch was just to get his mind off his fielding so he could get the bat going. He's done that, so it's time to give SS another try...
