  2. interesting, hendry must view shingo as a member of the 25 man roster. It was for ST if I remembered that quote correctly.

  4. With the Roberts stuff possibly off, and Gallagher looking like he'll be part of the major league team more than the minor league team, I thought i'd put this in baseball discussions rather than the minors (where I already mentioned it a few days back). According to BA, and now Cubs.com, Gallagher has dropped 25 lbs. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080118&content_id=2351060&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc Sean's dad also said he was clocked pretty high on the radar gun the AFL, so things are really looking up for him.
  5. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/748982,CST-SPT-cub19.article And I guess Lou's response was to a direct question about acquiring more IF'ers, so maybe things have been put to a rest.
  6. He just said he expects the only move we make will be getting another OF. Hendry, on the other hand, said he wants to make 2 significant moves. It's hard to imagine Roberts not being one of those. As far as Lou: 1. Do we really expect him to know every single thing Hendry is doing? 2. Do we expect him to come out and say "I think we'll be getting another OF and a new starting second baseman"?
  7. This is from Rotoworld btw. From Muskat's article on cubs.com. Kind of misleading by her though, the title is "convention starts with trade rumor", and then she just gives the Hendry quote about a RH outfielder and says one possibility is Marlon Byrd. Actually its from Rangers.com and not by her. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080118&content_id=2351043&vkey=hotstove2007&fext=.jsp&partnered=rss_mlb Hmm, didn't see that one. Muskat does have the one up on Cubs.com that I was referring to as well.

  9. Hendry was asked at the lunch-in about Marshall and replied "He's not going anywhere". That, combined with the reports that the players rumored in the Roberts trade was false, may give credit to that statement. Then on the other side of the ledger you have Steve Trachsel. Wasn't Marshall supposedly struggling from fatigue, or am I making things up? Nope, you are remembering correctly. Apparently, due to Marshall's injury history, he hadn't built up much stamina when it comes to pitching over the course of a season, so he just sort of lost it towards the end of last year. Anyone who thinks Hendry likes Traschel over Marshall or doesn't "like" Marshall because of that hurried acquisition late last season alone isn't basing their opinions in reality. Now there may be other reasons, but that trade is not one of them. If we're gonna pick out when Marshall started pitching poorly you'd have to say his 8/2 start was the beginning of it. At that point he had pitched ~100 innings on the season. Marshall threw 150 innings the year before. If Marshall couldn't throw more than 100 innings last year without tiring what makes you think he can suddenly nearly double his workload. If he could handle more than 100 innings last year, then why was Trachsel's rotting corpse brought in? I think it's pretty well documented that Trachsel had a couple of very good starts and some of our scouts recommended that he would be able to give us a few quality starts to close out the season. Didn't happen, but that was the reason.
  10. Pat saying how Theriot's D was a major pleasant surprise to him last year  I mean, he wasn't terrible but I don't think it was anything to praise.
  11. I buy it. He was there, he's even got a cell phone pick of Hendry up close talking to a group of people around him. Even with Kap Hendry was saying "The hell with" this and that. I'd say he'd have a dirty mouth when he's not being listened to by thousands of people.
  12. By the way, Hendry mentioned that he wanted to get a righty OF who could play all 3 positions and spell Pie when he faces the tough lefties. He amde it seem like Pie would play against the easier lefties, and whoever we acquire would play against the tougher ones, though that was my interpretation of it. I still got the impression Hendry might add another SP. I always read into things a little more than I should, but Hendry was talking about imrpoving the offense, and seemed to go out of his way to say something along the lines of "but if we can get a pitcher better than a guy we currently have in there we will do it". And like I said, he acknowledged it would probably take some young players to get a deal done. IMO, it souded like Hendry at least had some options on the table.
  13. No problem Billy. Yeah, Kap said Demp lost alot of weight. Demp and Theriot were just talking about how they think the Lou tirade really did help the team because they were never asked another question about the dugout fight again after that. They also said Lou went up to the batboy after a 5 hit game by Fontenot and told him "nice game" (thinking it was Fontenot.) Pat and Ron coming on next.
  14. Asked about getting another SP "We feel Lieber gives us more depth, but at the same time we aren't opposed to shuffling the deck. We know it would take alot of young talent to give up."
  15. Roberts was in there as well. Probably with a few other pieces, but probably down from the original price considering Hill and Pie were in there.

Wasn't Marshall supposedly struggling from fatigue, or am I making things up? And as far as the deal goes, i'm not saying it's great, but this might be Hendry's last year and I don't think there's going to be too many people arguing this lineup isn't better than what we currently have, in terms of next season: Soriano Roberts Lee Ramirez Fukudome Matthews Jr. Soto Theriot or that many people arguing this pitching staff isn't better than what we currently have, in terms of next season: Bedard Zambrano Lilly Lieber/Gallagher Marshall/Gallagher Again, i'm not really for or against the trade, but i'm just saying I could see Hendry doing it since it likely means better results on the field next year, which means a better chance of him staying.

  19. I'm assuming to a minor league contract, so probably a no risk/decent reward move.
  20. http://hirejimessian.com/index.php/2008/01/18/i-wish-i-could-say-its-a-pleasure-to-meet-you/ Gee Mat Jew= Gary Mathews jr., if you're not thinking right. By the way, make sure to read the article (same on as in Baseball Discussions) for some classic Hendry quotes including some naughty language. So, would you be cool with: Soriano Roberts Lee Ramirez Fukudome Matthews Jr. Soto Theriot Rotation: Bedard Zambrano Lilly Lieber Marshall With Dempster/or Marquis and Derosa off the books, if you're wondering about salary. Sarge jr. can hit righties pretty well (.800 OPS) last year in addition to great D, so if you can find a platoon guy who can hit lefties (maybe get Payton in the Bedard/Roberts deal), production from CF would be sufficient. Just passing it along  I have a hard time seeing this get done, Isn't Mathews, Jr. owed like eleventy billion dollars? Yes, but according to this, they would be taking on Marquis or Dempsters contract, plus DeRosa's, which would offset it so that it is bearable. He even talked about them including cash.
