  1. Trading Pie for that mess of crap would be easily the worst trade of the Hendry era.
  2. If I knew for sure that Grienke was over his depression or S.A.D. or whatever it was, and knew he could handle a pennant race, it would free up Hill or Marshall to be dealt for an impact bat. Just a thought, not advocating it.
  3. I don't. I'd trade Jones for Payton. Why, exactly? We play 70% of our games v. RHP. Career OPS v. RHP: Jones .824 Payton .747 That move makes us significantly worse v. RHP. Because our team has no issues hitting RHP. We suck against LHP. Payton is just an example. I don't care who we get, but we need to improve our offense against left handers. So you're advocating a substantial downgrade v. RHP to get a minor upgrade v. LHP? That's dumb. It would be dumb if Jones were the sole reason we were good against RHP. Look at the team numbers vs RHP and then look at the LHP #'s. Look at the amount of PA's Jones has. It's a marginal hit against RHP (which we could absorb due to everyone else's good numbers against RHP) for a potential gain against LHP. And it doesn't have to be removing Jones or getting Payton. That's just one example. We need to improve against LHP, and I'm for anything within reason to do it.

  5. That trade is lopsided.
  6. I don't. I'd trade Jones for Payton. But Pagan has been pretty solid against LHP. Don't let a hot streak fool you. He's a 5th OF. Yeah, but if he's only playing against LHP, that's fine with me. Hot. Streak. Consitent. Months. Look them up, he's been pretty consistent since his callup in May. Except for his SLG%, which is what we need to upgrade. That's gone way down since May.
  7. He's got an .821 OPS, and it's not his fault Tampa is stupid and sent him down. All that means is that he should be easy to get.
  8. I don't. I'd trade Jones for Payton. But Pagan has been pretty solid against LHP. Don't let a hot streak fool you. He's a 5th OF. Yeah, but if he's only playing against LHP, that's fine with me. Hot. Streak.
  9. Ok. How about Gomes? He should be able to be had.

  11. An offensive upgrade worth a couple of wins would make a huge difference in our chances. Not only might we wrap up a playoff berth sooner, allowing us to set our pitchers up, but it increases the odds of postseason success. How many more chances are we going to get with our core players? Lee, Ramirez and Soriano are not going to get any better. Z might not come back. We don't have a great minor league system to plug holes. We need to play for this season. We might not get many more opportunities.
  12. And power isn't just HR's. It's XBH's. Theriot needs to hit more XBH's of any kind. You CAN live with Theriot at SS if you upgrade the OF, or C. Agreed. But again, who's out there that will significantly upgrade either of those positions? Sosa in RF against LHP. Church in CF Payton/Pie platoon in CF Ramon Hernandez C There's also the argument to be made that you could find upgrades at nearly all of these spots in house; that a Murton/Floyd platoon in RF, a Pagan/Jones platoon in CF or a Pie CF, and a Soto/Hill combo at C would be better than what we have now. But the team has demostrated that Murton and Soto aren't going to get that opportunity. No, no, no. This Jay Payton is worthwhile talk needs to stop. It's better than what we have in CF.

  15. Yep. And what's with the talk about "being good enough to make it to the playoffs"? Shouldn't we be trying to win the World Series? We are not good enough. This team has huge holes at SS, C, CF, and RF. We need to upgrade at least one of them. Guess what? The majority of teams the Cubs play the rest of the way have more holes and are susceptible to dominant pitching, which is the Cubs primary strength. The Cubs play a lot of bad teams the rest of the way. Yes the Cubs should make a move to improve one of the holes. No question. But the team is good enough to make the playoffs as is, because they play bad teams a lot. Though I question its ability to make it past the divisional series as constructed. They would need dominate with pitching to stand a chance. Why should we settle for just getting there?
  16. Who's out there to get that we won't get fleeced over? Sosa and Pie or Payton could replace Jones and Pagan and we'd be a much better team, and neither guy costs much. We need to be better against LHP. We need more power in the OF. We can't keep this pace up without some sort of boost to the offense. Is Payton really better than Pagan? No. Against RHP? He absolutely is. Pagan is a nice 5th OF. He's not even close to a guy you want getting meaningful AB's in September.

  18. SS, C and RF remain problems. There are holes on this team. We get no SLG from RF, no anything from C and I'm not sold on a middle IF of Theriot and Fontenot. Are you forgetting CF? Yeah, actually I did forget CF. So there's half our everyday lineup that we could improve. And it doesn't have to be marquee type players. You could get good platoon guys for RF and CF for very little cost.

  20. This team is too flawed to continue this pace. We need to make some sort of offensive upgrade.
  21. What happened to him not wanting to be away from his family? no kidding, i thought that was his reason for wanting to come back from germany. in any case, i hope he makes the move, it can only help him turn into a better player. Landon would be a garbage EPL player. He's a guy who would be better in Spain or Holland. He's too small for the EPL. I don't think this happens. I think it's just him saying "you never know".
  22. This is why I think the teams should get more of the transfer money. Given what average salaries are in MLS, RSL will probably get enough cash from the transfer to sign a completely new starting 11. The important thing is that Adu is going to the right place for him to take the next step.
  23. I've never been clear about if his appearance against Canada in early 2006 counted as a cap. Adu himself has always said his first choice is to play for the US, but would consider playing for Ghana. I'd feel a lot better if he got capped for the 8/22 game against Sweden. I'm sure if the U-20 WC hadn't been upcoming, Adu would have been on the Copa America roster.
