  1. If you want to buy anything better than average pitching on the market, it costs money. Which we have in theory. Right now in our "plan", I'd rather burn money that trade prospects from a not better than shallow pool of good. Bourn doesn't pitch. He's not talking about Jackson. Jackson isn't sniffing 75 million. Hahahaha. I can totally read, I swear. Poor reading skills aside, just replace "offense" with "pitching" and my sentence stands.

  3. He said it was his fault in the sense that he said "the ball came out of my hands, it's my responsibility". Reading between the lines and watching his answer live, it was pretty fricking clear that he didn't want to put Hester on blast. I just read the reports on Twitter. Hester was asked and he said, "I ran the route I was supposed to run". It was reported that Cutler said, "I can't make that throw against a good team" I just saw his presser a few minutes ago; you could SEE the desire to call Hester the dumbest football player he's ever played with, and that he ran the wrong route like he does for 95% of the routes he runs. I was impressed he could hold it in. Also, Brandon Marshall looked like he was going to lose his [expletive]. That was actually unsettling. Also, Matt Forte is hot [expletive] garbage, and I don't care if Michael Bush had to put on a kevlar vest; if he was active, he should have gotten the ball on 2nd and Goal. For Forte to not be able to gain 1 yard over 2 plays is a damned joke.

  5. I like this and want it to happen.
  6. That’s the thing, right now you don’t buy elite pitching & hitting, you develop it. “Dumpster diving” isn’t the long term plan, it’s just perfect for right now. And this is why people make the mocking comments about wave after wave of prospects to both stack the lineup and trade for parts. Please enlighten me as to what we'll do when 75% or whatever the attrition rate is of the prospects we dream on don't pan out. These are not all or nothing, one or the other propositions. You can use free agency to hedge your bets and fill needs that you currently cannot fill. I'd like to see them acting a little more serious about trying to compete over the next year or two as opposed to just accepting being bad until 2015.
  7. It just seems like when they do things that are active, people still bash them or forget quickly. Signing Baker, Feldman and our new reliever isn't really being that inactive. It's more than a lot of teams have done so far in free agency. Give me a break.
  8. Of course there are some contracts that are "bad", but we aren't going to get extra outs per game for leading the league in wins per dollar. The market is what it is. Pitching is at a premium; if you want to buy pitching (or elite offense) on the market, you need to be prepared to pay that premium price. Dumpster diving for 1 year "make good" contracts and other team's busted prospects is fine to a point, but you can't expect to acquire elite or above average talent consistently by doing that.
  9. Liriano. Bourn too if you weren't just wondering about SP. There's a few relievers of interest too but no one that makes you take notice. I, for one, would like to see a bat or three. The focus on the pitching is great and all but I'd like to see this team get back out of the gutter when it comes to run production. Unless it's coming by trade it's pretty much Bourn and the island of misfit players. Bourn has some intriguing things about him but starting pitching is probably the best way to improve the team right now.

  11. Is there anyone else remotely useful on the market at this point beyond Jackson and Marcum?
  12. You know, it's frustrating to feel like a spastic goof every time I get pissy and you write a perfectly level headed response to my aggravation I need to hire you to be my life coach, TT
  13. Which argument is the strawman? It's difficult to narrow down. The "good job good effort" nonsense, the one year deal schtick, the sarcasm about a master plan to sign later free agents, the hyperbole about waiting for waves of minor league talent to start being active at the MLB level, take your pick really. I'm not sure it's nonsense. This is now what, the third FA to go through the same process of "we've got him signed" to "we didn't get the chance to match/he used us as leverage" thing? I don't know that it's a far intellectual leap to say that this is why you don't make plans that are contingent upon multiple things going right all at relatively the same time. And it is really hyperbole to mock and question the waves upon waves of pre arb players thing? Isn't that the admitted plan of our front office? And that's not even taking into consideration how frustrating it is to see this happen multiple times. Who are the other two FAs? My bad. Cespedes was one. I was thinking of Haren, but that was a trade. Puig, I guess, but I don't care about him. So 1 FA and 1 trade that fell through. I'm aware that I'm being overly annoyed. Doesn't mean it doesn't suck.
  14. I don't normally wish injury on players, but I kind of hope his arm falls off now just to screw the Tigers for signing him. Why? His agent did his job and his first choice was to stay in Detroit. It's our front office's job to not get off the phone without a deal and make sure they don't get used for leverage How pathetic clingy gf do you expect Jed and Theo to be? I don't expect that, but I would hope they would start to learn from this and tell people they'll pull offers if they go back and forth on them.

  17. Hey look, our half-assed imitation of the post Jordan Bulls isn't working out. What a surprise. Next thing you'll be telling me that we won't have these two waves of kickass minor league players all ready to break through at once to form the core of a roster AND provide us ammo to trade for hypothetical players.
  18. He can probably stay at Passages during the length of his contract.
  19. so essentially the best thing we can say about anibal sanchez is that he'll be exceptionally average for us for five years as long as his arm doesn't fall off (id be interested to see what his velocity was during his detroit starts) and if he does get hurt, who cares, we've got the money. I guess I'm ok with 5/75 but im not going to [expletive] my pants about the FO if he chooses to re-sign with a world series team (especially considering it still appears we're leading for him) I dunno; he's slightly above average and pretty consistent. We give up no players and just spend money. 5/75 seems to be market value for that kind of pitcher at age 28.
  20. Or, you make damn sure you don't get off the phone without a signed deal. You do enough to get guys to not try and get someone else to match
  21. Apparently they weren't brought in to actually succeed in signing anyone good, either.
  22. Many people here have been saying they expected the FO to add at least 1-2 "long term" pieces this offseason, even going to so far as to say one of Sanchez/Jackson/MCCarthy, so this isn't entirely unexpected. It would be a sensible move, and I fully expect they'll move on to Jackson with a similar offer if this falls through. So...as long as they expect to do it, but don't actually do it, it's okay? At some point the inability to actually close a deal is going to be a trend.
