  1. We're not really judging defense by outfield assists, are we? Aren't getting outs the objective for the defense? Well, getting outs/preventing runs, yes. But counting only outfield assists is a pretty terrible way to determine who has contributed most to that objective. I'd rather have an OF that can get to more balls and catch them or cut them off and hold a guy to a single than a guy that can't get to anything down the line or in the gap and is stuck trying to gun guys down at 2nd or 3rd. Not to mention my initial point, which was that judging arm strength/accuracy by outfield assists alone is not wise. I'm not making any judgments about Soriano v. Murton in this context, I'm simply pointing out that if you're comparing two OFs defensively and your support for 1 over the other is more outfield assists...well, you haven't really supported your position very welll.
  2. I'll take GlenAllen Hill with good RF defense, that's pretty much Soriano. ok, that's not completely fair because Hill was platooned but he was a useful player. I didn't realize how good Hill was during his "peak" years (which oddly came from about age 31-35). I sure hope Ankiel is never putting up an OPS+ around 125-135.
  3. What about Neifi's slam against the Cards. Dude, he SAVED us!
  4. No matter what the cost, it makes no sense to add an OF specifically to hit in the 2-spot. Especially in this lineup. As sad as it sounds, Jones has been pretty good there in the last couple games and if not him, put Murton there (and in LF). BTW - although I appreciate you changing your avatar to a smaller pic, am I seeing your new avatar correctly? Is the bear in the Cubs logo being...um...taken from behind, so to speak? Weird.
  5. As long as he averages 1 HR and 2 RBI per game, I don't think the Cards are going to care if he only gets on base once a game.
  6. Yeah - after a win helps. After a loss, watch out. I thought Dunston was going to punch my mom in the face after a loss in St Louis one year (we stayed in the team hotel and saw him walking through the lobby).
  7. I agree with this. I tried to get a lot of autographs when I was younger (12-14) and didn't have a lot of luck. But my 16-year-old sister had much better luck (which is a little sick, if you think about it). If you have a 20-something hot friend or girlfriend, bring them along. Might not help, but it won't hurt.
  8. Actually there is. It's the player who bats first and leads off the game. Is he ideal? No. But he can't hit down in the order because he can't hit curveballs. This is proven. Accept it. Check your stats. He has 18 SB and has been only caught 5 times. That's 78%. Not many teams sign guys to big contracts who hit dingers in BP. Murton is a strong guy, but he has not shown that he can hit homeruns consistently in the big leagues. Go ahead, add some loft and see how many times you pop put. DLee said he thought of adding loft, but he knew better. I never said anything about range. Both guys have had trouble catching the ball once they get there. Soriano has a much better arm. I think Soriano has better range because he is faster. But even if I leave that out, Soriano is a better OF because he can throw people out. I think Murton has one career putout when he doubled that guy off of first early last year. I am not bashing Murton. He is a decent bench player and utility OF. But that is all he will ever be. A - isn't 77% the break-even point for SB%? If not, it's right around there. So I think Rob's stats are accurate. B - At age 24, Murton put up a better than average OPS for an OF. Your conclusion statement is ridiculous.
  9. We're not really judging defense by outfield assists, are we?
  10. I might be wrong, but I thought the Phils have been looking to dump Burrell's salary for a couple years now. I don't think they view dumping him as getting worse.
  11. And when he starts hitting with men on base, are we going to be upset that his HRs don't clear the fence by as much as you'd like them too? From the guy who said we were all nit-picking in trying to find something Murton did well (re the cut-off man debate), I guess I shouldn't be surprised that 2 HRs in 2 days isn't enough.
  12. Yeah, I don't think anyone said that. someone probably did - hardly means everyone agrees. Actually, yes, almost everyone said it. B/c I was on MurtonFan's side of the argument. And that's usually a pretty lonely place to be...:D
  13. Isn't there someway you could shrink your avatar? I know there are suggested limits and this can't possibly be within them.
  14. Murton has 2 HRs in his last 2 games. Welcome to the Red-Head Hour! (Are we just making up shows?)
  15. As I have said all along but people told me to STFU. ? You've been here 2 days.
  16. He can produce in the 5 spot. It's a myth that he has only been able to hit at leadoff. He's a 5 hitter right now, and as he ages, and his legs get worse (two leg injuries already this year) it's only going to get more and more obvious. exactly
  17. Do not question the genius of TLR!! I'm guessing b/c if you put him in front of Pujols, the chances are the pitcher is going to throw strikes so as not to walk the guy hitting in front of Big Al. Of course, if the pitcher were smart, he'd throw a couple off the plate to see if Ankiel will swing anyway.
  18. b/c of his splits against LHP? I mean, Craig Monroe is terrible generally. .639 OPS for the year, .568 in July and .423 so far in August. I'd rather have Thames, who also crushes LHP but isn't as bad as Monroe overall.
  19. That's why they brought up a rookie second basemen to play LF instead of Murton when Soriano went down? Murton might have struggled in the majors earlier this year, but he outplayed EP to the tune of .140 OPS points at Iowa and he performed very well in a full season last year. It's not about a veteran, it's about Lou's dislike for Murton. There's just no other logical explanation at this point. And no to the older, more expensive Shannon Stewart.
  20. Toriis younger, better, and hes the best defensive outfielder on the planet. If nothing else se could just keep him on the team long enough for Joke and Pagan to see how its done. Even if he is the best defensive outfielder in the game, he's still not good enough offensively to "give the keys to the farm system" to the Twins for him. We already have a great defensive OF on this team (Pie) who is incredibly cheap. We don't need defensive upgrades in the OF unless they come with big offensive upgrades. And we certainly don't need to give up the farm for a 32-year-old OF with a career OPS under .800. He's having a great year, but that's outrageous.
  21. Lou said last night that Murton "probably" earned himself a start tonight. Lou's an idiot. You don't make decisions based on the fact that the guy hit a HR last night. I want Murton to start, but I'll believe it when I see it.
