  1. Never forget that ESPN is an acronym for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network. Entertainment comes first. Always has, always will. Sports is secondary.
  2. There may also be performance incentives in veteran contracts that aren't present in rookie contracts like Gallagher's. I don't know the terms of their contracts, but missing a couple of starts over the course of the season *might* cost Zambrano, Dempster or Lilly some cash.
  3. Thank goodness for BRICK walls. Oh, wait, he plays short-center.
  4. I wonder if Chris Speier's drunk driving incident had something to do with all of this. Perhaps Hendry was willing to make that move....fire Baker and name Speier as the interim manager. However, since Speier had enough of a problem that he was forced to leave the team for awhile, that wasn't an option. Maybe the organization was aware of Speier 's problem with the bottle, and couldn't/wouldn't commit to him mid-summer, when firing Baker was a real possibility. Just thinking out loud....
  5. I lurk a lot, but I don't say much. Alou's hissy fit was the turning point. If he keeps his composure, like a veteran is supposed to, the Cubs go to the World Series. He didn't go near that wall in the three years he was with the Cubs, and the one time he decides to, he has a hissy at a fan. Nice, poised, playoff-hardened, World Series experienced veteran play there....NOT! Moises Alou and Alex Gonzalez...the two reasons why the 2003 Cubs did not go to the World Series. And Prior goes blameless for allowing an Alou hissy fit to rattle him? Way to be a pro there Mark....NOT! Hmmm...let me see...a 2nd year player, pitching in the playoffs and running on fumes looses his concentration AFTER a 12 year veteran with a World Series ring looses his cool over a foul ball that was in the stands? Then, the 2nd year player regains his composure and manages to induce a tailor-made double-play ground ball to short, only to watch a 10 year veteran tank it. I'll excuse Prior. Coming back to get the double-play grounder was the definition of being a "pro". I won't excuse Alou OR Gonzalez. If either one of those two plays the game like a "pro", it's over in 6.

  7. Here's an example of my thinking, using the current rotation, starting this Saturday against the Mets. Saturday - Maddux/Wood Sunday - Zambrano (Wood unavailable) Monday - Williams (Wood available for 1-2 innings) Tuesday - Prior (Wood available IF he didn't pitch on Monday) Wednesday - Hill (Wood unavailable) It would work better if Prior and Hill were flip-flopped in the rotation. That way, on the days that Wood isn't available, Z and Prior are on the mound. It would then be reasonable to expect that Z and Prior would work deep into games.
  8. Tell me how dumb this idea sounds… We all know that Maddux is, at best, a 6 inning pitcher. After 6 innings, and lately, after 5, the Cubs are into the bullpen when he starts. I'm wondering if it makes sense for Kerry Wood to be used to "finish" the games that Maddux starts. If Maddux is going well, have Wood warm up when the Cubs bat in the 6th, knowing he's going in to start the 7th inning. If Maddux isn't going well, he warms up when the Cubs bat in the 5th and have him start the 6th. That gives Wood plenty of time to warm up. Since he's normally a starter, that's got to be important. It also forces hitters to make a huge adjustment between Maddux and Wood. If Maddux is going well, Wood pitches the 7th-9th. If Maddux isn't, Wood pitches the 6th-9th. That way, Kerry is pitching 3-4 innings on a regular rotation. If he's up to it, perhaps he can pitch an inning or two on the middle days of his rest, but not on the day immediately before or after a Maddux start. I thought about this approach back in the Spring, using a young pitcher with a future as a starter to come in for Maddux. Back then, I was thinking someone like Wellemeyer, Mitre or Leicester could fill that role, and be groomed for a starting spot next season. Fire away!
  9. Who can forget the immortal CH-EYE CH-EYE ROD-REG-WEEZE? :D
  10. Maybe you shouldn't mention Sidney Ponson and stomach in the same sentence!
  11. He neatly summarizes much of this summer's discussion on NSBB in one article. http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/sportsstory.asp?id=76075 Excellent Job, Bruce! Right down to the very last line!
  12. I've been following this thread off and on all day. The minor league thread has Hill starting at Iowa tonight. IF this trade is legit, does he make the start?
  13. Bad idea, IMHO. Peoria is too close to Chicago. The media would be all over Corey. Mesa is about as far away from Chicago as he can get in the Cubs system, unless perhaps they sent him to Boise.
  14. Well... After I finished crying and hugging my wife, who is just as much of a Cub fan as anybody, I'd have to TRY to find the words to explain to my kids why I was crying like a little girl! They're all in their teenage Cub fans, but I don't think they fully comprehend their "heritage". Then I'd spend a lot of time thinking about my grandfather, and my wife's grandmother, both of whom lived and died, and never saw the Cubs win a World Series. I'd end up crying some more. Then, I'd call my brother-in-law and my nephews, who are Sox fans.... I work in Springfield, Illinois, which has to be the Mason/Dixon line between Cub fans and Cardinal fans, so.... When I finally composed myself enough to go to work, I'd get my boss, who is also a Cubs fan, then go to the office/cubicle of every one of my Cardinal fan co-workers and pepper them with abuse!
